Grili, Beninate Provide Bums Strong Pitching in Loss to Thunder
December 12, 2011 — Sal Grili and Matt Beninate combined to allow only 1 earned run and 6 hits in the Bums 3-0 loss to the South Florida Thunder. The Bums appear to have finally rebuilt its pitching staff which lost last Spring’s MVP Rick Schnur and Mark McElmeel. Grili, Beninate along with Kevin Baumiller and Austin Wilson look to be the future for the Bums. In addition, Kelvin Colon is back in town and planning a comeback. Baumiller has been solid as a starter and reliever. 2 weeks ago, Wilson had 15K’s in 8 innings in the Bums victory over the Canes. Colon was one of the main pitchers that helped the Bums win Back to Back SFBL Championships in 2006-2007.

The Thunder scored two unearned runs in the top of the first inning. The Thunder added another run in the top of the 5th inning.

The Bums offense never really got going. The best scoring chance came in the bottom of the 4th inning. Luis Ramos led off with a walk. Mark Stewart followed with a single. Jason Bryan, who had already doubled, flew out to deep leftfield. Andrew Cross singled to load the bases. But then the Thunder had back to back strikeouts to pitch out of the bases load jam.

The Bums have a bye on December 18th and then the NABA Palm Beach will be off for the Holidays. Play will resume on January 8th.

Austin Wilson's 15 K’s Leads Bums to Win Over Canes – Playoff Hopes Still Alive
December 8, 2011 — Austin Wilson, making his second career start for the Beach Bums, recorded 15 strikeouts in 8 innings en route to his first win of the season. The 15 K’s ranks second all-time for most strikeouts in a single game by a Bums pitcher, behind Matt Schnelly’s 17 K’s against the Rockhounds in the Fall of 2009.

Sunday’s game was the best played all season by the Bums (2-7-1) and despite only having two wins, keeps them in the playoff hunt. If the Bums win its final four games, they will clinch the 6th and final playoff spot. They take on the Thunder, Twins, Crushers and Titans.
