2009 Star-Telegram Boys Soccer Super Team Player of the Year.
BOYS SOCCER: High school Super Teams
    By TOBIAS XAVIER LOPEZtlopez@star-telegram.com
Posted on Fri, May. 08, 2009

When Arlington Sam Houston began the season with only four returning starters, it meant much would be asked of senior co-captain Fernando Arreguin.

The crafty forward responded immensely to lead the Texans to the first district championship in the program’s history.

Arreguin’s 26 regular-season goals, his crafty attacking skills and savvy leadership earned him the 2009 Star-Telegram Boys Soccer Super Team Player of the Year.

What are your thoughts on Sam Houston’s success this year? "It made me feel good. I’m really happy for the team. A lot of people didn’t think we could do it, but we had a great run."

What about you personally? "I thought I had a great year. I knew I wanted to come out and beat my friend’s [Samuel Alvarado] record of 25 goals. I was confident every game. As captain, I told the guys to work hard every game and by playing our hardest, I was able to score goals."

What’s next for you? "I want to go to college. I’ll probably go to UTA. But if I can go to college somewhere and play soccer, I will."

    First team

F Johannes Gloeckler, Sr., Mansfield Legacy The German exchange student played the target forward position with unrivaled maturity.

F Fernando Arreguin, Sr. Arlington Sam Houston The dangerous striker paced one of the area’s top offenses.

M Jairo Rodriguez, Sr. Arlington Sam Houston The playmaking central midfielder brought organization to the 4-5A champs.

M Ubaldo Sustaita, Sr., FW North Side The dual threat scored 13 goals with 18 assists, and was District 13-4A MVP.

M Antonio Herrera, Sr., Grapevine The elite central midfielder was the focal point of the Mustangs’ squad.

M Chad Asher, Jr. Keller Central A truly dynamic player who had to be accounted for at all times.

D Ryan Vowinkle, Sr., Southlake Carroll A dominant force in the area’s elite District 6-5A competition.

D Clay Herzog, Sr., Mansfield The 4-5A Defensive Player of the Year earned the honor through staunch defending and organized play.

D Joel Oldham, Sr., Keller Rarely does a defender earn district MVP honors, but Oldham (5-5A Co-MVP) had simply that commanding a presence.

D Jordan Rodriguez, Sr., Mansfield Legacy Few outside fullbacks possess the composure/transition ability of Rodriguez.

GK Ryan Smith, Sr. Keller Technically solid and a true commander of the penalty area.

    Second team

F Jose Vargas, Sr., FW South Hills

    F Bryan Lothrop, Sr., Grapevine

M Jesus Lopez, Sr., FW Arlington Heights

    M Cody Hale, Sr., Aledo

    M Forrest Baker, Sr., Mansfield

M Vinny Mediate, Jr., Southlake Carroll

    M Cesar Ortiz, Sr., Crowley

    D Taylor Rogers, Sr., Aledo

    Coach Passos Moving On!
May 1, 2009 DISD Hires New Boys Soccer Coach

Duncanville ISD is pleased to announce the hiring of Head Boys Soccer Coach Nuno Passos for Duncanville High School for the 2009/10 school year. He will replace Bill Manning, who is retiring at the end of the 2008/09 school year.

Coach Passos comes to Duncanville from Arlington ISD, where he has served as Head Boys Soccer Coach at Sam Houston High School for four years. He has also served as an assistant coach in cross country, football, and basketball, and is Academy Coach for Solar Soccer Club in Dallas.

At Sam Houston, Coach Passos turned around the soccer program in a very short time. This past year, Sam Houston won District 4-5A finished as Area Finalist and Coach Passos was named District Coach of the year.

Coach Passos earned his Bachelor of Science (Exercise and Sports) from Tarleton State University in 1999. We welcome you, Coach Passos!

    Playoffs 2009
Well-rested Sam Houston defeats Paschal in boys soccer playoffs
    By TOBIAS XAVIER LOPEZtlopez@star-telegram.com

The thing that immediately distinguished Arlington Sam Houston as one of the area’s top boys soccer teams lies in the relentless, fearless way the Texans attack the goal.

Sam Houston used that determined, aggressive offense to knock off Fort Worth Paschal 6-2 on Tuesday in the Class 5A bi-district round at Nolan Catholic.

The Texans (18-5-1) advanced to face El Paso Bel Air in the area round on Friday in Midland an either 4 or 6 p.m.

"I thought the two weeks off were good to us," Sam Houston coach Nuno Passos said. "We had fresh legs when we came out and played quick and jumped on them early."

Sam Houston took a 4-0 lead in the second half before a determined Paschal side (14-8-1) added a pair of goals to narrow the score 4-2.

"We didn’t quit," Paschal coach Mark Townsend said. "We knew these guys by their reputation and at half time we changed everything and caught them off guard for a bit."

However, the Texans added two goals in the final three minutes to seal the game.

Sam Houston opened the scoring in the 13th minute as the Texans worked the ball down the left flank and along the edge of the penalty area.

Fernando Arreguin took the cross and struck a blast that rattled the crossbar and fell a few yards outside the goal. Carlos Salazar headed home the rebound for opening goal.

The Texans struck another frame-rattling shot two minutes later.

Sam Houston added a second goal in the 26th minute when Arreguin received a ball atop the penalty area. Arreguin remained calm and struck a smart low shot inside the right post.

The Texans rocked the frame again with 10 minutes remaining in the half when a penalty kick attempt struck the left post. Just three minutes before the break, Arreguin added his second goal to put Sam Houston ahead 3-0.

Sam Houston claims a district title

The Arlington Sam Houston boys soccer team claimed its first-ever district title this week.

The Texans (18-4-1, 10-1-1, 31 points) ensured the title by closing out their season with a 5-0 victory against Arlington Bowie.

"I think it means we have finally arrived," Sam Houston coach Nuno Passos said. "Hopefully, starting every soccer season we’ll have the opportunity to compete. There’s been a lot of parity the last few years and one year you might be at the bottom and the next year you’re at the top."

District runner-up Arlington Martin (14-5-2, 9-2) returns to the playoffs after missing last season.

Mansfield (9-4-6, 6-2-3, 21 points) and Arlington (8-10-2, 6-5, 18 points) grabbed the final two spots but the seeding will be determined after tonight’s match when the two clubs face off. Mansfield won the first meeting 2-1 on Feb. 17.

Sam Houston has a bye on Friday.

    Friday March 6, 2009
ARLINGTON – Sam Houston’s Jairo Rodriguez couldn’t have hoped for a better spot if he’d written the script of the Texans’ District 4-5A first-place showdown with Arlington Martin and chosen his location.

Just under two minutes in, Martin goaltender Kyle Ramer went airborne to punch a ball out of harms way. However Rodriguez, settled five yards directly in front of Sam Houston’s goal, was right there to send it to the back of the net.

Juan Patino added a second goal with 14 minutes left in the first half and the Sam Houston defense, led by goalie Josh Gonzalez, held firm despite playing a man down the entire second half for a 3-1 victory on a windy Thursday night at Wilemon Field.

“The first goal was huge because it gave us a little bit of confidence in such a big game,” Sam Houston coach Nuno Passos said. “Whoever gets the first goal has the advantage. More importantly we got the lead going into these 30 to 40 mph winds.”

The win moved Sam Houston (16-4-1, 8-1-1 in District 4-5A) four points ahead of Martin (12-5-2, 7-2-0) in district with three games left. The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first game on Feb. 6 and held on for a 3-2 victory over the Texans. Martin will have an opportunity to avenge a 2-1 loss to Mansfield earlier this season in a rematch at home on Saturday. Sam Houston plays Summit.

“If they lose to Mansfield and we beat Summit we’d win district,” Passos said.

Rodriguez, who scored Sam Houston’s first goal in its last meeting with Martin, was able to do so again because of a deep lob from Franky Figueroa just in front of the goal. Figueroa collected the ball after a corner kick from the right side.

Carlos Salazar set up the Texans’ second goal with a perfect pass to Patino. Figueroa added a goal with just over nine minutes left in the second to give the Texans a 3-0 lead.

Gonzalez and the Sam Houston defense took it from there despite playing with 10 players the entire second half after one of its own was red carded near the conclusion of the first. Martin ended Sam Houston’s shutout bid with six minutes left.

“It was an unbelievable effort by the kids,” Passos said. “It’s been a long time coming. But it wasn’t a surprise to me because I’ve seen their perseverance and work ethic.”
