The Cold Spring Silver Springers capped their inaugural season with a 3rd place finish in the NSCBL over 35 State Tournament, defeating the Woodbury Warriors 7 - 1. Steve Schreifels picked up the win in 3 scoreless innings of work, striking out 2 Warriors, and mixed in an array of fastballs, curveballs, and the dreaded knuckleball. Matt Butala made his first pitching appearance of the year, and the big fella threw well. Butala combined with Dave 'Change-up' Readmond in relief to preserve the win. The Silvers bats were a bit sleepy throughout the tournament, but came alive in the final game as they pounded out 14 hits. Ron Terres had a 3 - 3 day at the plate, Dan Schneider, Keith Kremer, and Curt Karls all went 2 - 2. Karls had the line of the day after he dove for a ball he popped up and said, "Cool, I get to wash my uniform tonight."
Tournament Notes:
Some fine performances were turned in throughout the tournament. The pitching staff lead the way in the playoff run, with a combined team ERA of 1.73 during the state tournament, while surrendering only 8 earned runs. Unfortunately, the offense sputtered during a four game stretch, while the Silver's hitters were limited to 8 runs on 17 hits, and lost two of those games. Throughout the playoffs several players turned in fine offensive efforts. Rod Schafer paced the hitters with a .412 average. Mike Trewick hit an even .400, and Ron Terres, Jason Spohn, and Dan Schneider all hit over .360 in tournament play.
Season Notes:
Overall the Silver Springers finished the year with a record of 23 - 4.
Defensively, Jason Spohn sparkled, completing a regular season of error free defense, while playing the demanding position of short stop. Ron Terres and Mike Trewick took countless hits away from opposing batters with their glove work, and John Theis made some fantastic catches in left field.
It was truly a team effort with the pitching staff. Dave Readmond, Dave Hinkemeyer, and Steve Schreifels all had 6 - 1 records. Russ Huls went 4 - 1.
Offensively, Ron Terres finished the season with an eye popping .413 batting average. Keith Kremer also swung the bat well, finishing with a .375 average. Overall, there were eight ' Hometown Artifacts' who finished the year hitting over .300. Mike Trewick and Rod Schafer were the burglars on the bases. Trewick swiped 19 bases, and Schafer got 12. Keith Kremer, Ron Terres, and Brad Neugart all finished the year with 11 RBI's.
The Silver Springers would like to extend a special thank you to: All the curious, supportive, and sometimes giggling fans. The sponsors: State Bank of Cold Spring, Cold Spring Brewing Company, and Marnanteli's Pizza. The Silvers were also fortunate to hear the voices of Jack Bell, Scott Cheeley, and Kurt Hemmesch who graciously volunteered their time to announce the home games. Marcia Huls, Tracey Neugart, and Joy Schafer in the concession stand. The Hansen's for keeping it stocked with goodies and Cold Spring beer. Duane Krueger and Cold Spring Baseball, Inc., and the 'ballpark kids' who helped out with the scoreboard, and shagging foul balls. Lastly, a big thank you from all the players to our manager, Bill Huls.
The grass does smell a little greener the second time around. We'll see you again next spring.
