The Sioux City Saints summer amateur collegiate baseball team opens their 2013 season today in Sioux Falls, South Dakota for the traditional 3rd Annual Border Battle hosted by the Sioux Falls Saints and presented by Schoeneman's Lumber and First Premier Bank. The Sioux City club opens with the Hadley Buttermakers out of Minnesota at 11:00am and then plays again at 3:00pm versus the Sioux Falls Saints.Tournament play and seedings will determine Sunday’s Championship day’s schedule, and all games this weekend will be played at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls.
The Sioux City Saints originated in 1975 and were founded by Fred Stolen. The Saints have had two Major Leaguers pass through their rosters over the years in Jeff Clement and Joe Bisenius, and Sioux City’s own Mike King was the fourth overall draft pick in Major Leagues amateur draft in 1980 by the Oakland Athletics.Storm Throne played for the Sioux City Saints in 2011, and in 2012 was drafted out of Morningside College by the Chicago White Sox in the 25th round of the MLB draft.Throne; 6’7” & 215lbs. throws right-handed and is currently with the Kannapolis Intimidators of the Class A South Atlantic League.
The 2013 version of the Sioux City Saints will include thirty players from the immediate Sioux City, Iowa area; most of whom are currently playing college baseball.Sioux City East High school boasts the most alumni on the Saints including General Manager and infielder since the late 1990’s Bob Protexter, and first year manager Kevin Pottebaum.Pottebaum is a 2006 East High graduate and then played at Morningside College as a 1st baseman and left-handed pitcher, finishing there in 2010.Kevin will have assistance from his father Marty Pottebaum as the Saints Bench Coach.Bishop Heelan and Sioux City West each have three former players playing this summer while South Sioux City, Sgt. Bluff-Luton, and Sioux City North are each represented with two players on the Saints squad. In college representation, Morningside College leads the way with thirteen players on the Saints roster this summer.Dordt College of Sioux Center has four playing this summer while Northwestern College of Orange City has three.See the full 2013 Saints roster below.
Top man on offense is CJ Nolen from Sioux City West who led the Wayne State Wildcats with a .335 average, with 16 of his 54 hits going for extra bases including 5 home runs.Austin Stubbs from Sioux City East will help lead the hitting attack for the Saints, and after hitting .375 in his second year at St. Cloud Technical & Community College he will be transferring to Southwest Minnesota State University (NCAA Division II).Helping Stubbs and Nolen will be Davis Bloemendaal from Orange City who hit .384 for Northwestern College this spring season.Tanner O’Neill from Sioux City East and Morningside College hit an even .300 this spring with 28 RBI, while Britt Anderson also from Sioux City East and Morningside College had a Slugging Percentage of .404 while holding down his outfield position with a .958 fielding percentage.Andy Kollbaum from Sgt. Bluff-Luton and Dordt College will be solid behind the plate with his .949 fielding percentage to handle Alex Groth from South Sioux City and Morningside College who tossed a 3.38 ERA for the Mustangs and Josh Van KeKerix from Sheldon and Dordt College who had a 4.82 ERA. Also expected to pitch a few clutch innings this summer is LHP Chase Rozeboom from Sioux Center, a graduated senior from Northwestern College. Rozeboom studied Exercise Science with a concentration in Physical Therapy at Northwestern, and in 17 appearances this season with the Red Raiders opposing hitters hit a measley .225 against him. With his degree Rozeboom hopes to work with people who suffer from many various ailments as it is a miracle in itself that Rozeboom even became a college athlete himself due to his own 'ailment'. In 2004 at the age of 12, Rozeboom was the receipent of a heart transplant because he had congenital heart failure and a hole in his heart. Read here the February 13, 2013 Sioux City Journal article by Tim Gallagher about Rozeboom and his life story, and read here the July 10, 2005 Chicago Tribune articleabout Rozeboom a year after his transplant getting to meet Major League Baseball's Dontrelle Willis as part of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Key losses this summer will be Josh Van KeKerix’s brother Ben Van KeKerix, also a pitcher at Dordt as he will be testing his pitching skills in the highly talented Division I level Northwoods League with the La Crosse Loggers in La Crosse, Wisconsin.Ben pitched well last summer as a quality left-handed pitcher for the Sioux City Saints, and that garnered him a late season spot in the NCAA Division I Coastal Plain League playing for the Morehead City Marlins where he fashioned a minuscule 0.79 ERA in 5 appearances. The Saints this summer will also miss Mike Bisenius, a Bishop Heelan graduate and All-American at Wayne State College.Bisenius was picked up last summer by the Sioux City Explorers. Also not returning this summer is Corby McGlauflin and Dylan Shoemaker of Southwest Minnesota State; Corey Van Gorp and Taylor Morris from Northwestern College who this year respectively hit.376 and .331.Jayson Hinrichsen will be playing in eastern Iowa this summer after finding a home in Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa where he started 31 of their 46 games as a sophomore second baseman.Bo Smith of Morningside College will not return to play this summer prompting the decision of Rett Smith to not return as manager for the 2013 season.
The Saints full 21 game schedule, with games in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota will be released the week of June 3 and will play all the months of June and July, and will include games against the NCAA Division I laden Omaha Diamond Spirit, the Carroll Classics, the Sioux Falls Saints, and the rival of rivals . . . the Vermillion Red Sox.The Fred Stolen Classic will then take place in July to conclude this 39th season of Sioux City Saints baseball.
Saints General Manager Bob Protexter starts out the Saints Baseball Clinic for baseball and softball players of all ages on June 27, 2012 in Whiting, Iowa at the Whiting High School baseball field. The clinic was free of charge and took place from 5:00 to 6:45 prior to the Saints vs. Omaha Diamond Spirit at 7:30. The campers were all troopers as the clinic was on the hottest day of the year with 102 degrees tempature.
The 2012 Saints season is under way ................
The 2012 Sioux City Saints open up their 38th season of amateur baseball this Saturday, June 2 with an entry into the 2nd Annual Border Battle in Sioux Falls, South Dakota; presented by Schoeneman's Lumber and First Premeir Bank. This is a 12 team season opening tournament sporting teams from South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. The Saints begin with the Brookings Cubby's at 1:00pm who are run by Billy McMacken; South Dakota State University's only 3 time All-American baseball player (1988, 1989, and 1990). The second game of the day will be against the Pierre Rattlers at 5:00pm. Results of the day determine when the Saints play on Sunday. All weekend games will be played at Harmodon Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Saints primarily play a summer collegiate level schedule. Unless games are doubleheaders all games are 9 inning games, and the Saints use wooden bats for all games.
The 2012 version of the Saints has a strong college presence with players coming from more than ten area and regional colleges with all of the players having local ties, including 16 of the 28 college players listed as having gone to high school at Sioux City East, North, West, Bishop Heelan, Sgt. Bluff-Luton, and South Sioux City. The Saints are highlighted by the return of Mike Bisenius of Wayne State College after having played with the Saints in 2008. Storm Throne of Morningside will lead the Saints pitching staff with a mid-nineties fastball. Bisenius and Throne as well are both looking forward to next week's Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. Bisenius was a 48th round pick of the Washington Nationals in 2011, but opted to return for his final season at Wayne State where he hit 10 home runs. This will be Throne's first opportunity to be drafted during his college career. The Saints are heavy on East-siders as the Black Raiders are represented by six players in Britt Anderson, Kyle Gogle, Jay Hinrichsen, Trevor Miller, Tanner O'Neill, and Austin Stubbs.
The Saints 21 game schedule includes games in Iowa, Nebraska, and South Dakota while calling Dakota Valley High School and Sioux City West High School as their dual home fields. The Saints are led by second year Manager Rett Smith, a former Sioux City North High School (2006) standout, and left-handed pitcher and 2010 graduate of Morningside College. The first year pitching coach is Brian Boettcher, a 2003 graduate and right-handed pitcher at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The General Manager is Bob Protexter, a Sioux City East High graduate, and an infielder and 1991 graduate at Morningside College. Protexter has been running, managing, and playing for the Saints in one capacity or another since the late 1990's.

The Sioux City Saints Baseball Club is a summer amateur collegiate baseball team that was established in 1975 by Fred Stolen. The Saints are predominately former high school players from the Sioux City area that currently play in college and return home for the summer to play baseball. The institutions of Morningside College & Briar Cliff University also have players on the roster. The Saints use wooden bats, play 9 inning games, and have a twenty game schedule in 2009.
The Saints scheduled starting pitcher is Bob Larson, a 1980 graduate of Sioux City East High School, and a 1984 graduate of Morningside College. Larson was a right-handed pitcher for the Chiefs baseball team for coach Don Protexter until his untimely death in 1983, and then for Jim Scholten in 1984 in his first year as skipper. Larson was also a quarterback for the football squad. Larson has pitched competitively in summer amateur baseball since graduating; living in Minneapolis, Minnesota from 1984 to 1993; and in Phoenix, Arizona from 1993 to the present. Larson works as a chiropractor and owns and operates Shea Chiropractic Clinic in Phoenix. Off of the baseball field and away from work Larson keeps in shape by running long distances. The 47 year old Larson has qualified for the 2010 Boston Marathon with a time of 3:27:03 at P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon on January 18, 2009.

The scheduled umpires for the game on July 19 will be Pat Spieler, Jim Scholten, Korey Behr, and Don Stich.
Spieler is a Sioux City native, a 1990 East High graduate, and a former Major League Baseball umpire. As a youngster, Spieler cut his teeth by working as an umpire at Morningside Little League’s Pulaski Park. Spieler attended and graduated from Joe Brinkman’s Umpire School in Florida in 1994, and from there went on to a ten year career in professional baseball as an umpire. Spieler worked his first Major League game in April of 2000, and until 2003 traveled between Class AAA and the big leagues. Spieler then left professional baseball to raise a family and currently resides in Omaha. Spieler now continues to work as an umpire in the NCAA Division I Big 12 Conference.
Scholten is a long time area high school umpire, but is better known as Morningside College’s baseball coach of 26 seasons leading the team to 572 victories since he began in 1984. Scholten was elected to the Iowa Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997, and was named the 2000 North Central Conference Coach of the Year. Scholten was a coach for the Sioux City Explorers during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Scholten has close ties to summer amateur baseball and Saints starting pitcher Bob Larson. Scholten holds the South Dakota amateur baseball record for three pitching victories during the four-day state tournament in 1970. Scholten was in his first year at the helm at Morningside when Larson was a senior.
Fred Stolen; the eighty-one year old Saints Founder, former Saints Manager, and Saints Manager Emeritus will be throwing out the first pitch. Stolen keeps busy by coaching his grandkids, and nieces, and nephews on their baseball teams, and is preparing for what he proudly claims as his “124th Wedding Anniversary”. That would be 62 years each for him and his wife, Millie, the Saints #1 fan for many years.
Allison Nash will cap off the pre-game ceremonies with the signing of the National Anthem. Nash is an incoming senior at Sioux City East High School. Nash is no stranger to large crowds as she sang the National Anthem at the 2007 College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska at Rosenblatt Stadium in front of more than 20,000 fans.
Kevin Hurley of RVP Sports Productions will film the game activities.
This game will be played rain or shine as Westwood’s Athletic Director; Todd Greder (contact information above) has agreed to open up the Westwood Gymnasium for a wiffle ball game between the Saints and the Tappers IF the skies open up and pours rain on the field creating unplayable conditions. The baseball field and the gymnasium are adjacent to one another next to the Westwood Community High School that is located at 1000 Rebel Way in Sloan.
Bring you lawn chairs as the stands will fill up quickly, and we will see you at the park on July 19.

Benefit Game for Blake Jorgensen - $5 Admission
If You Build a House for Blake, They Will Come
“If you build it, he will come” is the famous line from Iowa’s own baseball movie ‘Field of Dreams’. The voice that speaks is only heard by one person, Ray Kinsella who is played by actor Kevin Costner. Now in western Iowa there are a lot of voices speaking, and the script line that is being heard by the masses is: “If You Build a House for Blake, They Will Come”.
On November 8, 2008, tragedy struck the Sloan, Iowa community known as Westwood when five Westwood Community High School wrestlers and their coach were seriously injured in a near head-on collision near Hornick, Iowa. A man in the other car died. The wrestlers were on their way to a wrestling clinic. The teenage passengers included Trent Baker, Jordan Mitchell, and Blake Jorgensen of Sloan; Sage Washburn of Hornick; and Adam Greeno of Salix, Iowa. The coach was Daniel Thompson. Blake Jorgensen suffered the brunt of the accident.
Mitchell is back on the diamond this season sharing duties at first base. Baker endured a lacerated kidney, a ruptured spleen, a compound fracture of the right tibia and right fibula, broke his right ankle, flattened four metatarsals on his right foot, and fractured his right femur bone. It is absolutely remarkable that now Baker is way ahead of schedule and is already back in action this summer as a 1st baseman, 2nd baseman, and pitcher for Coach Paul Kerns’ Rebels of Westwood.
Following the accident, Blake Jorgensen and the other passengers were immediately transported to and then hospitalized at Mercy Medical Center twenty miles to the north in Sioux City, Iowa. On November 20, Blake was then transferred to Craig Hospital in Denver, Colorado with a severe C-6/7 spinal injury. Craig; as it is known as, is a 93-bed, private, not-for-profit, free-standing, acute care and rehabilitation hospital that is world renowned as a premier center for specialty rehabilitation and research for people with spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury. Blake and his family returned home on February 17 of this year, and the high schooler is currently on the long road of rehabilitation and recovery.
On Sunday, July 19, 2009 at 5:00pm the Fred Stolen Classic will pit the Sioux City Saints Baseball Club against the Yankton Tappers at the Westwood High School baseball field in Sloan in a benefit game for Blake Jorgensen. The Fred Stolen Classic is an annual baseball tournament in Sioux City, but this year it will be a bit different. All proceeds from the game will go to the Jorgensen family, and for more information on the Saints and the benefit game please visit the Saints website at: www.leaguelineup.com/siouxcitysaints
The Sioux City Saints are a summer amateur collegiate baseball team and were established in 1975 by Fred Stolen. The Saints are predominately former Sioux City and area high school players that currently play in college and return home for the summer to play baseball. The Sioux City institutions of Morningside College and Briar Cliff University also have players on the Saints roster. The Saints use wooden bats, play 9 inning games, and have a twenty-five game schedule. The Saints manager is Marty Pottebaum a retired Sioux City police officer, and is assisted by former Sioux City Explorer (American Association independent league team) left-handed pitcher, Leo Patino who came to Explorers after playing in the minor leagues with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Detroit Tigers. The Saints General Manager is Bob Protexter. Protexter is a 1985 Sioux City East High graduate, and played for Blake Jorgensen’s grandfather Don Jorgensen Sr. at East High where he was the head baseball coach. Protexter also played against Blake’s father, Don Jr., in summer amateur baseball many years ago and he remembers ‘Donnie’ as “an imposing 6’6” righty that had the intimidating ability to effectively place blazing fastballs outside of the strike zone.”
Due to the extent of Blake's spinal injuries he relies on a wheelchair for his mobility and is learning to do many daily tasks all over again with the help of his dad Don, his mom Jamie, his sister Kendra, and the rehabilitation team. The Jorgensen's current home is a split-level house, and it was built somewhere probably in the 1960's. With it's narrow hallways and very narrow doors going in and out of the bathrooms and bedrooms, the current home will not work with the wheelchair.
Community supporters of the Jorgensen family have established a plan to help "Build a House for Blake." Their website of www.buildahouseforblake.com is dedicated to that cause and provides ongoing information and ways to help, donate, and show your support. Their goal is to raise $100,000 for the project and "Build a House for Blake."
