It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of one of the original Stingrays, Tom Dickinson (Coach Tom, as he was known).
Tom was a coach and umpire for many years, and he was well respected by his peers. He came to the Stingrays in late 2011 to coach the 12U team that spring. He took some time off in spring 2013 to watch his son Philip as the starting shortstop for Gloucester Catholic. He was proud of his son, who accepted a scholarship to play for Wagner College in New York after his Senior season this year.
On the field, Tom had a remarkable way of getting through to players. His gruff exterior and booming voice were commonplace during games, but he had a big heart and was well liked and respected by everyone he coached. I don't know how we would have gotten through that inaugural season without his help, support and guidance. He is certainly one of the people that made this program so successful.
Tom, we will miss our conversations. You were a true friend who we could trust with anything. We always knew we could count on your loyalty and support. You had a way of touching everyone you met, and we are all a little bit better for having known you.
