SRA Colt Baseball

Just in case you haven't noticed. Colt League baseball has been born again in Smithfield. This summer completed the third year of the rebirth and the league achieved new levels of success. This year there were two teams that were made up from 28 players. These two teams were led by long time SRA  Coaches, former board members, special people and all round good fellas ........Danny Hughes and Frankie Yerabek.  Thanks for a job well done. Great guys!!

The schedule during April and May included travel teams, show case teams and scrimmages between the Smithfield teams. Then came the month of June that included double headers every Sunday against  several teams from Virginia Beach. The month was long and grueling but the SRA teams only suffered one loss each during June. A strong showing for two teams from small town America.
Throughout the season it  became apparent that this year could be very successful. Each game saw improvement and after that special month of June it was time to validate our program quality by assembling an All Star squad. This task is often hard and gut wrenching as coaches agonize on the last few spots to round out the team.
A team was selected and spent two weeks building chemistry and began believing in themselves. The result was a runner up finish in the East Zone - South Region Colt tournament. Our season ended with a heartbreaking 7 - 3 loss in the championship game to Kempsville.  A game which was even closer than the score indicates. During the post game ceremonies a special moment was experienced with comments from the Tournament Director/PONY Baseball Representative. He echoed his comments from last year. I quote " Each year Smithfield players and parents demonstrate the highest level of class behavior and great sportsmanship." That speaks volumes about our Program.
Looking back on the season provides a great sense of pride. But that pride is not just limited to this years All Star squad. There is also tremendous pride for all of the players and coaches associated with SRA Colt baseball program over the last three years.
Based on the turn-out of players for the Fall season and the success of those two teams, led by Chris Kennedy and Robby Hall, the upcoming season will continue the growth of our Program.

Baseball is a game of opportunities!!

Who is SRA?

Smithfield Recreation Association (SRA) is a local non-profit organization that runs baseball and softball for children (ages 5-16) in and around the Smithfield area. We are not a part of IWC Parks and Recreation. We do not receive any funding from either the Town of Smithfield or Isle of Wight County. We do "borrow" some County/School fields, when available.

Beale Park resulted from a Land donation made by the late Carl M. Beale over 40 years ago. Through his generous donation and many volunteers and supporters over the years Beale Park has developed into the facility it is today.

SRAs' MISSION STATEMENT - To encourage, in all of the children who participate in our program, the development of sportsmanship, athletic skill, teamwork, self-reliance, self-discipline, and the ability to win graciously and to lose with dignity.
