Welcome to So Cal Cardinals Scout Baseball
Administrative Office: 12211 Parkerhill Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93311-9575 Welcome to So Cal Cardinals Scout Team Baseball. The "Scout Ball" season runs from September through November each year. In July the So Cal Cardinals invite selected high school players from the California area to attend a day-long workout in Southern California with Cardinals scouts. Players are selected from those who attend the workout, and those players are invited to be a So Cal Cardinal team member. Each year, we tryout on average 300-600 players. The So Cal Cardinals have an excellent reputation with the MLB scouting community and with college recruiters across the United States. Each year, several So Cal Cardinals players are recruited by college programs and sign letters of intent to play college baseball; and each year, several So Cal Cardinals players are also drafted in the MLB First Year Player Draft, held in June. The So Cal Cardinals play in the Southern California Scout League, and play additional games in Arizona and Nevada.

NCAA & MLB CHANGES THAT CAN AND WILL AFFECT YOU
CHANGES THAT WILL AFFECT BASEBALL PLAYERS HEADING TO COLLEGE AND THE MLB DRAFT Effective August 1, 2012, Schools may award multi-year scholarships to prospective student athletes. In years past, student athletes have been awarded scholarships which were renewed annually, and those scholarships could be retracted for any reason. In past years there have been many situations where the annual renewal process left student athletes with cut scholarships, which in many cases was justified with a simple response of, “they didn’t pan out.” A former Rice University Athlete sued the NCAA after his scholarship was cut. The Rice University student claimed limited playing time, coaching changes, and injuries, lead to the loss of his scholarship. The student won his case, which gave him relief for his junior year, but he was forced to pay his own tuition his senior year. The athletes’ primary goal for filing the laws suit was to make schools offer multi-year scholarships instead of the traditional year to year scholarship. With the current NCAA changes to the rules for the National Letter of Intent effective August 1, 2012, schools can now guarantee student athletes scholarships for the player’s entire college career, and those scholarships cannot be revoked solely on athletic performance. This new ruling will directly impact how college coaches evaluate their future talent. For college coaches and recruiters, the need to broaden the player evaluation process will be a must, putting as much weight on the prospective student athletes’ academics and character as they do the athletes’ talent on the field. This new ruling is sure to benefit amateur athletes who are moving into the college ranks.
Major League Baseball has made changes to the way the First Year Player Draft is conducted, and those changes will have a direct impact on the college player and college programs. MLB has instituted a slot draft and placed a luxury tax threshold based on a teams recommended bonuses for the first ten rounds of the First Year Player Draft. MLB also moved the deadline for signing draftees ahead one month to mid-July, which will impact advisors abilities to negotiate with potential draft picks. MLB is also looking into the idea of having a world wide draft starting as early as 2014. What does this all mean? It means that young prospective players who are not projected high enough in the draft will be more likely to enter into college baseball programs, and request that the interested college programs offer a multi-year scholarship.
