2009 Season Outlook - AFC Senior Division
The 2009 Season of SYS football has begun and as we did last year on this site, we previewed the Senior Division to determine which teams were rebuilding or ready to make a championship run. Here is our breakdown for the AFC Senior Division for 2009:
ELLENDALE- This may again be the strongest team in this division this year. The Bears are deep and have a formidible front line. Their play at the jamboree against the Memphis Bears showed they were capable of matching up against any team in this league. They have an experienced coaching staff as well which will
CORDOVA - The surprise 2008 Senior Division Champions are prepared to defend their title this year. They have a strong fullback as well as a talented offensive line. QB is a strength for this team.
ELMORE PARK - The coaching staff is experienced but the Packers have a lack of depth. The next few weeks will tell.
SOUTHWIND - The Titans stellar 2008 season ended in the conference championship game with the inability to score points. The Titans roster has been restocked with new skill players which the team hopes will increase their offensive output.
BARTLETT - The Panthers have built upon the foundation they began last season which was a rebuilding year. They have several players who appear to be capable of getting this team into the playoffs, as well as an experienced coaching staff.
WHITEHAVEN- The Raiders have talent at the skill positions on this team, however, they are in need of depth on the offensive line. They are certainly capable of winning games, however, they may not have the depth to contend with the depth being shown by the other squads in the division.

#1 DEFENSE DOMINATES; TITANS BEAT WOLVES 18-12 TO REMAIN UNBEATEN AT 6 - 0
This past Saturday saw the latest chapter in one of SYS's most intense rivalries as the 5 - 0 Southwind Titans took on the 4 - 1 Cordova Wolves. First place in the division and the number one seed in the SYS playoffs was on the line as these two teams waged a pitched battle for AFC supremacy. This game featured the Southwind Titans' number one rated defense squaring off against the league's number one offense Saturday, with the Titans' D winning the battle. The Titans saw the return of their starting QB and CB, J. Jones, which immediately paid dividends. Jones snagged two interceptions on defense, as well as throwing for another TD on offense.
The game began with Cordova on offense. The Wolves RB #21 was stripped of the ball by DE R. Anthony. J. Sledge picked up the fumble and raced 35 yards for a touchdown and the first score of the game. The Titans failed to convert the 2-point conversion ( due to a quick whistle by the officiating crew) on an attempted QB sneak by J. Jones and led the game 6 - 0. The Wolves failed to move the ball on their next possession and were forced to punt. The Titans then drove the ball on their first offensive possession to score behind the rushing of J. Sledge. The Titans hit on an off tackle play and after an aggressive lead block by J. Thompson, J. Sledge scored from 20 yards out. The Titans again failed to convert the 2 point conversion and led 12 - 0.
Just after the half, Cordova scored after a blown coverage by the Titans' Defense, one of two major defensive lapses in the game. The Wolves also failed to convert the extra point and the Titans led was cut to 12 - 6.
The second half saw the Titans' defense dominating the game. CB J. Jones picked off a Cordova pass and returned it 50 yards for a first and goal. The drive ended with a touchdown pass to WR C. Hayslett to extend the Titans' lead to 18 - 6.
The game tightened after a blown coverage on defense resulted in a late Cordova touchdown. However, on the game's final possession, the Titans' defense pressured the Cordova QB into another interception to seal the victory. CB J. Jones hauled in the interception and the Titans won this game 18-12. With this victory the Titans' secured the #1 seed in the SYS playoffs and are closing in on an undefeated season with two games to go. The Titans have the Tipton County Chiefs this upcoming Saturday. Congratulations to all Titans Players on Saturday's win.

The defense continued to make big plays including interceptions by M. Terry and T. Jallow to stop Elmore Park drives. Finally, then J. TITANS SURVIVE ELLENDALE UPSET BID, WIN 6-2
This game was an absolute battle and one the Titans definitely did not see coming. Playing without starting quarterback, Jawann Jones, the Titans' offense struggled to get on track all game. This game began with an injury to starting wide receiver Casey Hayslett on the first play which grounded the passing attack immediately. Then several Titans' miscues, culminating in a botched snap on a punt which led to a safety. Ellendale took the lead in this game into halftime, 2-0. The second half featured plenty of defense on both sides of the ball, however turnovers were the difference. First DT B. Herring crushed an Ellendale runner at the 40 yard line, causing a fumble, which was then picked up by CB Marco Terry, who raced into the Endzone for a TD. The Titans failed to convert the extra point and led then 6-2. The Titans defense then held on consecutive Ellendale possessions. On the final Ellendale possession, the Titans Defense held on a 4th and short deep in their own territory and took over on downs. The Titans then ran out the clock to win the game and improve to 4-0 on the season. The Titans now face the Elmore Park Packers this weekend.
PBT '08 ROLLS ON - TITANS DOMINATE MILLINGTON 48-0
The Senior Division Payback Tour rolled into Millington this past Saturday with spectacular results. The Titans Defense opened the game with a swarming effort that resulted in a three and out series for Millington. However, after fumbling the ensuing punt return, the Titans were forced to make a goal-line stand to prevent a Millington score. After this successful defensive series the Titans obtained possession. On the first play, QB Jawann Jones scampered 42 yards to set up a short yardage TD. With the 2 point conversion, the Titans went up 8-0. Then, after forcing another 3 and Out possession by the Trojans, the Titans returned the punt with M. Terry going 30 yards for a 16-0 lead. Things then went from bad to worse for Millington, as on the next possession, the Titans J. Sledge intercepted a pass on 2nd down and returned it for a TD and a 24 - 0 lead. After Titans CB Marco Terry intercepted yet another Millington pass on their next possession, the Titans scored on a run by #25, Tijan Jallow. The Titans finished this game as a 48 - 0 rout and are preparing for their next game against Ellendale.
