WELCOME 2011
Welcome everyone to the beginning of a new season. Thank you to everyone volunteering themselves to assist in making the Straw Plains Raiders a great place for children to learn and have fun. Let's get started on a great year!
EMFC
The Straw Plains Raiders are part of the English Mountain Football Conference (EMFC). The EMFC is comprised of teams from Jefferson, Sevier, Grainger, Cocke, & Claiborne counties. Eligible players and coaches must live in one of the a-fore mentioned counties and must not have played or coached for any other team in the conference the prior season. Eligible ages are 5 - 12 as of August 1st, 2011.
News
February 26, 2011, Athletic Director Mark Williams and Board President Sean Carpenter attended the first English Mountain Football Directors/Board meeting at the Sevierville field. Athletic Director Mark Williams made a motion for the league to incorporate a new rule to allow counties that share a zip code with a non-EMFC county to allow children within that zip code to participate in the league. This would have allowed Straw Plains to accept children from the Knox County side of the 37871 zip code. However, this was voted down by the majority. Most felt it would be a logistics nightmare and others felt it would allow a non-stop introduction of other zip codes and communities. However, it was recognized Straw Plains, Talbott, Parrottsville, and New Center would benefit from such a rule, but when votes were cast, only Straw Plains, Talbott, and Dandridge voted in favor.
Furthermore, English Mountain Football Conference voted to eliminate the “B” Super Bowl. This was the Super Bowl slotted for the teams that did not make the upper bracket playoffs. On the other hand, it was decided all teams will make the playoffs and have a chance to advance to the one and only Super Bowl, where the league champion will be crowned. Playoff rules will be similar to the NFL and will result in the AFC facing the NFC in the Super Bowl. Finally, the mercy rule was changed from 35 to 24. This means when one team exceeds 23 points (24) the clock will not be stopped except for injuries and halftime. This was at the request of the officiating crew who referee our games. They thought it would speed the games up once it was clear the game was over.
