SLT ADDS CASEY COON TO COACHING STAFF IN 2014
Stateline Thunder is proud to announce the addition of Casey Coon to our 2014 coaching staff. Casey will head coach our 2014 16U team along with her sister Lynsey and mother Monica as assistant coaches.
Coon was a 2005 graduate of Freeport High School with 4-Time All-Conference honors including a NIC-9 MVP before becoming a Blackhawk Brave for her first two years of college. As a Freshmen and Sophomore, she was an All-American pitcher and earned All-Conference, All-Region, and National All-Tournament Team honors. She transferred to Upper Iowa University after her sophomore year where she played NCAA softball throughout her junior and senior years.
In her 2009-2010 season as a senior, she started 36 of 36 games, batted .407 with a .542 slugging %, .485 on base %, and a .984 fielding %. She led her team in at bats, stolen bases, total bases, runs scored, and hits, and earned All-Conference honors.
Coon's assistants, her mother and sister, are also softball pedigree from the area. Monica Coon was Head Softball Coach at Highland Community College until 2013, after being an Assistant Softball Coach from 2006 to 2010.
Lynsey Coon was also a 4-Time All-Conference selection as a Freeport Pretzel. She went on to play softball for Highland and at Ashford University in Clinton, IA and earned All-Conference honors all 4 years as a catcher.
Casey and her family have been helping Stateline Thunder since 2009 by occasionally giving private instructions to players within the program. Their knowledge of the game will not only be an incredible asset to her team, but to the program as a whole.
The Coon name has been synonymous with softball in Northwestern Illinois and Stateline Thunder is proud to add Casey, Monica, and Lynsey to our program.
SLT 10U AND 12U TEAMS BRING HOME HARDWARE FROM USSSA STATE TOURNEY
The weekend of June 21st, 22nd, and 23rd was the USSSA Illinois State Tournament for Stateline Thunder's 10U and 12U teams. The weather brought its own Thunder on Friday and Saturday causing rain delays for the whole tournament but the 10U and 12U teams brought the BOOM all weekend long and both brought home hardware.
The 10U team earned a 3rd place finish with a 4-2 record. They outscored their opponents 29-10 in their 4 wins and Emma Norton and Reese Coon were named to the All-Tournament team. Brycelynn Smith was named Offensive MVP of the tournament and best of all, Stateline Thunder 10U was chosen for the Sportsmanship Award by the tournament directors.
The 12U team improved upon their 5th place finish in 2012 with a 4th place finish this year. They got off to a slow start in pool play and were the #3 seed out of their pool but came alive in the double elimination bracket by winning their first two games against #1 seeds from other pools. A loss to the eventual state champion team knocked them down into the bottom half of the bracket where they won another game against another #1 seed to make the final four teams. They were eventually knocked out of the tournament by the 2nd place team in the state. Hannah Holland and Abby Smith were named to the All-Tournament team.
Congratulations to both teams on being 1 of the top teams in Illinois.
SLT 12U & 14U TEAMS GO UNDEFEATED IN OREGON
SLT 12U & 14U teams were able to earn undefeated tournament records May 31st thru June 2nd in Oregon, WI. Both teams were the #1 seed coming out of pool play and maintained their winning ways all the way through their bracket and championship games.
The 12U team won their championship game 5-4 and 14U won their championship by a score of 11-5.
Great job to both teams!
SLT TEAMS SWEEP USSSA QUALIFIER
All three Thunder teams were in action June 8th and 9th in Morrison, IL in a USSSA Qualifier. The 10U team started the winning trend by going 3-0 in pool play and earning the #1 seed going into the single elimination bracket.
Thunder 12U and 14U teams also followed suit by earning perfect 3-0 records in pool play and the #1 seed in their respective brackets.
On Sunday, Thunder 10U made quick work of the semi-final game with a 15-0 victory. In the Championship game, it was a rematch of a close 3-2 win for Thunder in pool play against Sterling Steam. This time, Thunder would leave no doubt and went on to get the win by a score of 7-1.
The team had a batting average of .452 for the weekend and oustcored their opponents 44-4 with the help of strong pitching and a no-hitter on Saturday and perfect game on Sunday.
Thunder 12U and 14U also earned their 1st place finishes but, unfortunately, they were not able to win them in traditional fashion. With only the 12U and 14U championship games left to be completed and during the 1st inning of the 12U Championship game, mother nature unleashed enough rain to shut down the tournament after the fields became unplayable.
The tournament director was forced to go back through pool play and complete bracket games to consider head to head matchup results and to calculate runs scored vs. runs allowed. After all numbers were in, SLT 12U and 14U teams were declared champions of their divisions thus giving Stateline Thunder a total sweep of the tournament.
SLT 12U outscored their opponents in pool play 31-5 and the 14U team put 29 runs on the board while only allowing 4.
Their performances during pool play paid off and earned them the tournament sweep.
SLT 10U RANKED #24 IN THE NATION BY USSSA
Stateline Thunder's 10U team competed in a USSSA Qualifier in Roscoe, IL on May 18th and 19th. Their 5-1 record and 2nd place finish at the tournament earned them more points, more power rating, and qualified them for the USSSA World Series at the end of the summer.
Their only loss in the tournament came in the championship game against a team they had beaten earlier in the tournament. The game was close through all 7 innings but SLT couldn't get passed third base and lost the game 3-0 after giving up 2 unearned runs in the 1st inning.
However, more points and more power rating with their successful weekend earned them a #2 ranking in Illinois for power rating and #3 for points.
Even more impressive is SLT 10U's #24 ranking in the entire United States for USSSA power rating.
Congratulations to all SLT 10U players and coaches on the incredible accomplishment.
The weekend of May 4th and 5th was a busy one for SLT's 10U and 12U teams. They were both competing in a USSSA Qualifier in Davis Junction, IL.
Saturday, May 4th started bright and early for the 10U team with their first game at 8am against the Jr. Warriors from McHenry at Don Schmidt Fields. SLT played them tough all game but came up short by 1 run with a 2-1 loss in pool play. In their next game with Cary Crush, Thunder got back to their winning ways with a 5-1 win. In bracket play Saturday afternoon, they would be paired up with Cary Crush again and this time, SLT added an exclamation point to the win with an 11-0 victory to move them on in the winner's half of the double elimination bracket.
Sunday morning's first matchup would offer a chance for revenge against the McHenry Jr. Warriors but SLT would come up short again with a 5-2 loss. Now moved down into the bottom half of the bracket, SLT would have to beat the Beloit Screamers to have a chance to get into the Championship game where they would have to win twice like they did in Freeport to win the tournament. However, the Beloit Screamers edged out SLT this time in a 4-1 game. Their win would put them in the Championship game against McHenry. The loss would put Stateline Thunder 10U in 3rd place for the tournament but 1 position away from earning an automatic bid to the USSSA National Tournament.
Emma Norton from SLT's 10U team was voted Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the tournament after pitching 7 innings, only giving up 1 earned run on 2 hits, and having 12 strikeouts during pool play. Thunder's pitching core had a combined weekend total of 3 earned runs in 27 innings with 40 strikeouts. SLT 10's record for the season is 15-5.
SLT's 12U team was in action at Davis Junction where their first game would match them up against the Joliet Dirt Devils. The game was close but some keys plays in the field would cost SLT the victory with a final score of 9-6. In their second game, SLT would come back with a new focus and drive and get a big win against Illinois Gold by a score of 16-7. The 1-1 record in pool play would earn them the #2 seed in their pool after winning the tie breaker over Bureau County Blaze.
In bracket play, SLT would face off in the first round against Big Dogs Invasion who they hadn't beaten yet this year. SLT's bats were hot and their defense was strong. Big Dogs took an early lead but SLT chipped away with a run here and a run there. Eventually, they would take a 2 run lead late in the game and the defense would hold strong to earn the 5-3 victory.
In the second bracket game for SLT 12U, they would matchup against the Oak Park Windmills. Again, SLT's defense was playing tough but the Windmill's bats proved to be too hot in this game. The loss put SLT into the bottom half of the bracket where their next game would be against Sterling Steam on Sunday morning at 8am.
SLT was pumped and ready right away Sunday and came out hot with an 8-4 win over Sterling and an 8-4 win over Kishwaukee Valley Storm. The next round would put them up against Bureau County Blaze. At this point in the tournament, only 6 teams were left from the original 12. The game was close and SLT played tough but Bureau County edged them out 5-4 to knock SLT out of the tournament with a record of 4-3 for the weekend and improving their season record to 19-9.
All three Stateline Thunder softball teams were in action at the Pretzel Twist Classic softball tournament this past weekend at Read Park in Freeport, IL. A beautiful weekend welcomed teams from Marengo, Oswego, Freeport, Dakota, Peru, Mendota, Amboy, Belvidere, Sterling and Stillman Valley.
All three teams played amazing softball all weekend long and earned a tournament record of 15-2 for the SLT program.
The 10U team was 7-1 on the weekend with their only loss coming in a 1-0 pitcher's duel. They only allowed 6 runs all weekend and didn't allow a single hit on Saturday. The sole loss forced them to come through the bottom half of the bracket to get back to the Championship game where they defeated the Sterling Sharks not once, but twice to become Pretzel Twist Classic Champs.
The 12U team was 4-1 on the weekend wth their only loss coming in pool play. They were the #2 seed after their loss to Marengo but won a rematch in bracket play to make it to the championship game where they would have to face Marengo for a third time. In the championship game, Thunder took an early 8-1 lead but the game was far from over after Marengo scored a few runs here and there to get back in the game before Thunder locked them down defensively to capture the 8-7 win and title of Pretzel Twist Classic Champs.
The 14U team was 4-0 on the weekend despite having to play with 8 players in their Sunday morning game to get into the championship. With only 2 outfielders and having to take an out everytime the 9 spot in the lineup was up to bat, Thunder held off the Amboy Rage for a 2-1 victory. In the championship game, they would face Amboy again but this time Thunder would have a 9 player roster and managed to get the win 4-2 and complete the sweep of the Pretzel Twist Classic.
So far this season, Thunder has won every division of every travel softball tournament hosted in Freeport as the 12U team also won the Freeport Stix Slugfest 12U tournament held on April 20th and 21st at Read Park in Freeport.
The weather this past weekend was cold, but Stateline Thunder’s 12U team was hot while earning a 5-1 record in the Freeport Stix Slugfest 12U tournament.
The Stix Slugfest 12U tournament on April 20th and 21st in Freeport at the Read Park Fourplex attracted teams such as Express Fastpitch – Stillman Valley, Big Dogs Xtreme – Machesney Park, Lil’ Wahoos – Dakota, Bison Outlaws – Loves Park, Grayslake Pride – Grayslake, Freeport Stix – Freeport, Stateline Thunder – Orangeville, and Illinois Gold – Davis Junction.
Thunder players from Freeport, Orangeville, Warren, Forreston, and Thompson outmatched Express Fastpich and the Bison Outlaws in pool play while losing their sole game to Big Dogs Xtreme. The 2-1 record in pool play earned them a #2 seed in their pool and matched them up against Lil’ Wahoos from Dakota in the first round of the bracket on Sunday morning.
Both teams took the field at 9:00am with temperatures around 40 degrees and wind gusts of 15mph. Stateline Thunder took the win with a 13-5 score and moved on to the second round against Express Fastpitch where they also won, 11-6.
In the Championship game, Stateline Thunder was matched up against the Bison Outlaws from Loves Park. A huge first inning put Thunder in the lead 7-0 and they would never look back. After big hits and solid defense from all Stateline Thunder players, they outscored their opponent 16-4 to earn the title of Champion.
