Unions split a pair in Springfield, IL
May 5, 2012
(Springfield, IL) - The St. Louis Unions traveled to Springfield, IL for a pair of matches against the Springfield Long Nine Base Ball Club. Both games were played by the rules of 1858, when runners could not advance on balls caught on the fly, as well as being played with a softer ball with a little more bounce. In the opening game, the Unions raced to an early lead, tallying twice in the first inning before Springfield tallied three of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Each team scored an ace in the third inning before the Unions put up single aces in the fourth and sixth to go ahead for good, holding on to beat the Long Nine by a score of 5 to 4.
Unsound defense and timely hitting by Springfield haunted the Unions in the second game, as the Long Nine prevailed by a score of 11 to 7.
Offensive highlights on the day included Kevin 'Rumble' Rudolph (6-8, 3 doubles, 3 aces, and an RBI for both games), Andrew 'Cornbread' Lurk (3-3, triple, and 2 aces including the game-winner in game one), Mitch 'Gee-Whiz' Ealy (game-winning RBI in game one), and Matt 'Mayhem' Moushey (2-4, ace and 3 RBIs in game two). Gee-Whiz and Mayhem were the defensive stars of the day.
The Unions (9-2) will be back in action on Sunday, May 27th for a doubleheader against the Murphysboro (IL) Clarkes in Murphysboro, IL. Game time is 1pm.
