Chism Notches First Professional Win
Sun Valley Alum TJ Chism picked up his first professional win on Sunday, August 16th for the Kingsport Mets in a 4-3 win over Princeton. Coming on in relief, Chism pitched an inning and a third of hitless baseball, striking out one. He is currently third on the team in appearances, having made 14 appearances out of the bullpen in the team's 51 games. Chism has a 1-1 record and has struck out 18 batters in 16.1 innings for an average of 10.1 Ks/9 innings. Congratulations TJ!
Chism Makes Pro Debut
Sun Valley grad TJ Chism made a successful pro debut for the Kingsport Mets (short-season rookie league) Saturday evening. In a 15-7 loss to Bluefield (Orioles), Chism entered the game in the seventh inning with his team down 5-1, Chism rolled through the seventh and eighth innings as he struck out 3 and did not allow a hit in facing the minimum six batters. The Mets then scored 6 runs in the bottom of the eighth to put Chism in line for the win, up 7-5. Unfortunately, Mets' relievers would surrender 10 runs in the 9th and went on to win the game, 15-7. Irregardless, a great debut for TJ. Congrats!

Farnell Heads 2009 All-Delco Team
After consultation with area coaches, the 2009 All-Delco baseball team was announced Wednesday. Congratulations go out to Sam Farnell, who was a first team selection as an infielder. The 2009 Vanguard standout most valuable player and former most outstanding offensive player (2008) and most outstanding defensive player (2007), finished his 2009 campaign with a .450 batting avg., 10 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 21 RBIs, a .507 on-base percentage, and a .750 slugging percentage. In a three year varsity career that spanned 63 games, Farnell's offensive numbers are head-turning. In 211 plate appearances and 184 official at-bats, he collected 81 hits (.440 avg.), 20 walks, 18 doubles, 5 triples, 9 home runs, 64 RBIs, and scored 61 runs, while slugging at a .739 clip. Congratulations also go out to Andrew Machemer, a 2nd team All-Delco selection, as well as Glenn Stanners and Tom Brennan, who were honorable mention representatives.
Chism Selected In Major League Draft
Congratulations go out to 2006 Sun Valley alum and '06 Daily Times Player of the Year, TJ Chism, on his selection in the 2009 Major League Baseball Player Draft. TJ was selected in round 32 by the New York Mets as a pitcher. Chism is the first Sun Valley grad to be selected in the draft. He had just recently completed a stellar junior season at Lasalle University where he split time at first base (48 games, .310 avg., 47 runs, 11 home runs, 50 RBIs, .458 on-base pct., .561 slugging pct., 15 stolen bases) and on the mound while hitting out of the cleanup spot. He was a first team All-Big 5 Selection. Congratulations and best of luck TJ!
Machemer and Farnell Help Del-Val Triumph Over Central in Barrett Game
Sun Valley senior representatives, Sam Farnell and Andrew Machemer, helped the Del-Val League to an exciting 4-3 victory over the Central League in the 25th anniversary edition of the Barrett All-Star Game Saturday, May 30th. Machemer split time at third and first base, while Farnell split time at third base and on the mound. For his efforts at the plate and on the mound, Farnell was awarded the game's MVP award (shown below) as he was the first Sun Valley pitcher in the game's history to pick up a win on the mound (Sun Valley pitchers were 0-8 before Saturday), throwing three strong innings. He also tied the game at three with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning.

Sun Valley Ends Season On High Note With Come-From-Behind Win
May 13, 2009
Sun Valley ended its first Ches-Mont season Wednesday with a come-from-behind 10-9 victory over Oxford. Early on it looked as if Sun Valley would win in run-away fashion. However, the Hornets of Oxford showed just how competitive the Vanguards' new league opponents are, top to bottom, as they clawed their way back and took the lead. After a scoreless first, Sun Valley sent 11 men to the plate in the second inning as they plated six runs. Four walks, a balk, a bunt single by Dan Vuocolo, and a two-RBI single by Robbie Hughes fueled the outburst. Oxford showed signs of life in their half the third as they plated two to make the score 6-2. The Vanguards would answer back in their half of the third as Kyle Misci would drive in Ryan Howe on a fielder's choice. While Sun Valley seemed to be comfortable with the score 7-2, Oxford had other ideas. Oxford would send 10 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, chasing starter Glenn Stanners, who had cruised up to that point. Three singles, two doubles, and a three-run home run would quickly turn a 7-2 lead into a 9-7 deficit for Sun Valley. Cody Lewis would come on to get the last out in the fourth and pitch a scoreless fifth before giving way to Sam Farnell for innings six and seven. Sun Valley would show a resiliency the coaching staff had been looking for all season long as they quickly regained the lead in their half of the fifth. Ryan Howe would walk to lead off the inning and then, after two outs, Kyle Misci would single to keep the inning alive. Just like they had done all season long, Farnell and Andrew Machemer fittingly would help the Vanguards take the lead. Farnell doubled in Howe to make it a 9-8 contest and then Machemer, with two strikes and men on second and third, would rip a single to right center to bring in the tying and eventual winning runs to make it a 10-9 contest. Farnell would allow just one base runner in the final two innings, courtesy of an infield error, in closing out the contest and picking up his fourth save of the season to go along with two wins. Cody Lewis, pitching a scoreless inning and two thirds, would pick up his first varsity win on the mound. The Vanguards ended their first season in Ches-Mont League play at 7-12 and 7-13 overall. Stay tuned for offseason news and updates to go along with information about a team get-together in the coming weeks.
Rustin Avenges Loss To Vanguards
May 11, 2009
Bayard Rustin avenged its 2-0 loss to Sun Valley earlier in the season Monday by defeating the Vanguards 8-2. Rustin got on the board early with 2 singles in the first, resulting in a 1-0 lead. However, Sun Valley would bounce right back in the home half of the first as Tommy Thompson reached base to lead off the inning on an error and was eventually driven home by Sam Farnell. A Robbie Hughes double in the second followed by a Max O'Malley sacrifice fly would give the Vanguards a 2-1 lead. The game would stay this way until the sixth inning. However, in the sixth, the Knights erupted for five two-out runs courtesy of two walks and three extra-base hits to take a 6-2 lead. They would tack on two more in the their half of the seventh, courtesy of a two-run home run, to make the game 8-2, and that's where it would end. The Vanguards managed just five hits in the contest. One bright spot of the day was senior hurlder Andrew Machemer, making his second strong start of the season, as he surrendered just five hits and an earned run in four innings. Next up for Sun Valley is their final contest of the season on Wednesday against Oxford.
Great Valley Triumphs Over Sun Valley
May 8, 2009
Sun Valley fell victim to a playoff-hungry first place Great Valley squad Friday, falling 12-3. Great Valley would get on the board in a hurry, with its first four hitters singling to quickly make it a 3-0 contest. The Vanguards would settle down however as the game entered the fifth inning with the same 3-0 score. The fifth inning for Sun Valley would prove to be its demise though as 3 Vanguard errors helped the Patriots extend their lead to 7-0. A two-out rally by Sun Valley in their half of the sixth breathed a bit of life into the Vanguards as Sam Farnell and Andrew Machemer singled consecutively and then executed a double steal with Farnell scoring from third. Max O'Malley would walk and Robbie Hughes then doubled in both Machemer and O'Malley to make it a 7-3 contest. Unfortunately for Sun Valley, Great Valley would answer right back in their half of the sixth, sending nine batters to the plate, to quickly turn a 7-3 contest into a 12-3 contest. Offensively for Sun Valley, Machemer did what he could to fuel the Vanguard offense going 3 for 3 to continue his season long hot hitting. Next up for Sun Valley is the final week of its first Ches-Mont season as it faces Rustin at home Monday and Oxford at home Wednesday.
Henderson Too Much For Vanguards
May 7, 2009
After a 6 day layoff due to rain and poor field conditions, Sun Valley was the victim of runs scored early and often in a 10-0, 5 inning defeat at the hands of West Chester Henderson Thursday. Henderson plated 3 runs in the first by way of a solo home run and two-run home run. They would add 6 more runs in the second, sending 11 batters to the plate, to take a quick 9-0 lead. A single run in the third would make it 10-0 for Henderson and with Sun Valley's offense stymied, the game would end that way after five innings. Sophomore Tommy Thompson was the lone catalyst Thursday, going 2 for 3 with a single and double. Ryan McCann had the only other hit, a double in the fifth inning. Next up for Sun Valley is a contest at Great Valley Friday.
Unionville Edges Sun Valley in Tight Contest
April 29, 2009
In a game that last just 1 hour and 20 minutes Wednesday, Unionville edged out Sun Valley, 3-0, in a well-played contest. Sam Farnell was the hard-luck loser on the mound for the Vanguards as he pitched brilliantly in defeat. Unionville would start the scoring with a lead-off solo home run in the second inning. Sun Valley would get its first two runners on base in the third inning but failed to score. Beyond that, Sun Valley's best chance to score came with the contest still at 1-0 in the sixth inning. A lead-off walk to Tom Brennan and subsequent sac bunt by Dan Vuocolo brought Sam Farnell to the plate. Farnell hit a sinking line drive to left field that was controversially ruled a catch and enabled Unionville to double up Brennan at second to end the Sun Valley rally. Unionville would add two runs in their half of the sixth inning, finally breaking Farnell's streak of 14 straight batters retired. Andrew Machemer would finally get Sun Valley's first hit of the contest to lead off the seventh, but was quickly doubled up as the game quickly came to an end with Unionville on top 3-0. Next up for Sun Valley is another three game Ches-Mont week with West Chester Henderson away Monday, Oxford at home Wednesday, and Great Valley away on Friday.
Downingtown West Defeats Sun Valley
April 28, 2009
A pivotal Ches-Mont contest at home against Downingtown West ended in defeat for Sun Valley by a score of 14-5 Tuesday. West would get on the scoreboard early and never looked back as a lead-off single and two-run home run quickly put Sun Valley in a 2-0 hole. The game would stay that way until the third inning when the Downingtown West bats got going again. Two singles, an error, and another two-run home run quickly put West up 6-0. A Ryan Howe double to lead off the third would finally get the Vanguards on the board as a Jarad Carney fielder's choice would bring in Howe to make the game 6-1. Sun Valley would plate two more in their half of the fourth with a lead off walk to Andrew Machemer, single by Kyle Misci, and sac fly by Max O'Malley. A Jim Stigale fielder's choice would plate Misci and the game headed to the fifth inning 6-3. Neither team would score in the fifth inning. Unfortunately for Sun Valley, West would score five more in their half of the sixth, sending eleven batters to the plate in an inning that included 4 walks, a hit batter, and a crucial error with the bases loaded. With the game at 11-3, West was not done and ended its scoring with two more in the seventh. A two-rbi single by Andrew Machemer would end the scoring at 14-5, favor of Downingtown West. Next up for Sun Valley is an away contest at Unionville Wednesday.
West Chester East Throttles Vanguards
April 27, 2009
A busy and pivotal week in Ches-Mont baseball action began with a disappointing 12-2 loss at the hands of West Chester East on Monday. After a scoreless first inning, East would strike first in the second inning, plating two with the help of a 2-base outfield error. Four walks and a triple in the third would help East plate 3 more to take a 5-0 lead to the fourth. The Vanguards would get on the scoreboard in their half of the fourth with a leadoff Sam Farnell double and subsequent Andrew Machemer RBI single. A Jim Stigale fielder's choice would get a second run in in the fourth as the teams headed to the bottom of the fourth at 5-2. However, East would get the two runs back quickly as a single and 2-run home run made the score 7-2 heading to the fifth. A 1-2-3 Vanguard fifth was followed by a 5-run East fifth as a single, triple, single, double, walk, and triple in that order would quickly end the contest, 12-2. Next up for Sun Valley is a crucial contest at home against Downingtown West Tuesday at home.
Vanguards Upend Kennett
April 23, 2009
Sun Valley avenged a 15-9 defeat earlier in the season at the hands of Kennett with a 6-5 victory on Thursday afternoon at Buggy Field. The win pushed the Vanguards Ches-Mont league record to 6-6, their first time at the .500 mark since the second game of the season. Andrew Machemer picked up the victory on the mound, going a courageous five plus innings in his first start of the season, before turning the ball over to Sam Farnell for the last two innings in closing things out. A lead-off walk and two hits in the first for Kennett allowed them to take an early 1-0 lead. Sun Valley would quickly tie the score in their half of the first as Tom Brennan led off with a walk and eventually came around to score on a fielder's choice by Kyle Misci. Kennett would take a 2-1 lead in the third inning before Sun Valley bounced back with two of their own to take a 3-2 lead. Again it was Brennan sparking the offense with a lead-off single. He would come around to score on a Sam Farnell double, and Kyle Misci would single Farnell in. In the fourth, Ryan Howe reached base via an error with two outs, stole second, and came around to score on a Brennan single as Sun Valley took a 4-2 lead. Farnell came in to relieve Macehemer in the sixth as Kennett would plate one to make it a 4-3 contest. However, in their half the sixth, the Vanguards would plate two more runs via a pinch-hit Dan Vuocolo RBI single plating Chris Pantle, and a fielder's choice ground-out by Brennan, which plated Jim Stigale. Two runs in the seventh by Kennett would be as close as they would get as the game ended 6-5 in favor of the home Vanguards. Next up for Sun Valley is another tough Ches-Mont week with league contests at West Chester East Monday, at home against Downingtown West Tuesday, and at Unionville on Wednesday.
Sun Valley Rallies To Upend Octorara
April 22, 2009
Faced with a must-win situation to keep playoff hopes alive, Sun Valley came back to beat a resilient Octorara squad 6-3 on Wednesday. The Vanguards started quickly, plating two runs in their half of the first. Chris Pantle started the day with a single and ultimately scored from third on a botched pickoff play at first base. Sam Farnell would then double in Jim Stigale for a quick 2-0 lead. However, Octorara would bounce right back with three of their own off of eventual winner, Glenn Stanners, aided by an error, in their half of the 1st. The game would remain 3-2 heading to the sixth inning before Sun Valley would eventually get their offense moving. Tom Brennan (2 for 2, run, rbi) would jump-start the offense with a lead-off single, was sacrificed to second by pinch-hitter Dan Vuocolo, and would eventually score on a wild pitch to tie the game at three. Chris Pantle walked and eventually would score via a wild pitch again for a 4-3 Vanguard lead. Andrew Machemer (3 for 4) would provide some much-needed insurance later in the inning, plating Sam Farnell (2 hits, RBI) for a 5-3 lead. Farnell would come on in relief of Stanners in the sixth and work a quick sixth inning. Sun Valley would then provide more insurance in their half of the seventh as Jarad Carney would walk to lead off, move to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anthony Crispin, and would score on a Tom Brennan single. Sam Farnell, facing blustery winds and a driving rain in the seventh, would eventually pick up the save, getting out of a bases-loaded jam to end the contest with Sun Valley on top, 6-3. Next up for Sun Valley is another Ches-Mont contest against American Conference leader Kennett at home on Thursday at 3:45.
Downingtown West Game Cancelled/Rescheduled
April 20, 2009
Monday's home contest against Downingtown West was cancelled due to rain. It has been rescheduled for next Tuesday, April 28th @ 3:45 p.m. at home.
Great Valley Wins Convincingly Over Sun Valley
April 18, 2009
In a rematch of last year's district semifinal between Great Valley and Sun Valley Saturday, Great Valley turned the tide in convincing fashion with a 13-2, five inning win over Sun Valley. The two teams battled early on with both teams stranding runners in the first two innings. Great Valley plated a run on a ground out in their half of the third, but Sun Valley bounced right back in their half of the third with Sam Farnell plating Tom Brennan on a ground out. However, the Vanguards defense and pitching would soon go south in the fourth. A 2-1 game with two outs and no one on in the fourth, Great Valley would quickly turn the game into an 8-1 contest on the heels of three walks, two hit batters, and one hit. Great Valley would add to its lead again in the fifth with five more runs on just two hits with 3 errors and 4 walks again contributing to Great Valley's offensive surge. Cody Lewis would double and score on a Tom Brennan single in the fifth, but that would be it for the Vanguards. Next up for Sun Valley is a home contest against Downingtown West on Monday as Sun Valley begins another three game Ches-Mont week with an away contest at Octorara Wednesday and a home contest against Kennett Thursday.
Win Over Rustin is Second Straight Ches-Mont Win
April 16, 2009
Quality pitching and solid defense were the name of the game Thursday as Sun Valley knocked off West Chester Rustin Thursday by a score of 2-0. Glenn Stanners pitched his first varsity complete game and threw his first shutout all in one shot as he scattered just six hits over seven innings. As usual, Stanners pounded the strike zone, allowed just one extra base hit, struck out two, and walked just one. Stanners ran into trouble just once as in the third inning a two-out walk followed by a double resulted in a perfectly executed Machemer to Carney to Crispin out at the plate to end the inning. While the Vanguards had baserunners all game long and ran themselves into several outs, Sun Valley's offense Thursday was taken care of by senior outfielder Chris Pantle. Pantle singled with the bases loaded in the fourth to plate a run (another was cut down at the plate) and hit a solo home run in the seventh to straight-away center to provide some much needed insurance. Next up for Sun Valley is a home Ches-Mont contest Saturday against Great Valley at Buggy Field. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
Victory Over Downingtown East
April 13, 2009
Sun Valley picked up its 3rd league win of the season Monday with a 14-4, six inning victory over Downingtown East. Aided by 17 hits, its largest hit output in more than three seasons, Sun Valley jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. A two-spot in the second inning and a single run in their half of the fourth gave Sun Valley an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. With Sun Valley starter Sam Farnell cruising, a couple of Vanguard defensive hiccups led to Downingtown East's first run of the ball game and an 8-1 score after four. Glenn Stanners would come on to shut down a Downingtown East rally in the fifth as East scrapped back to an 8-4 score. However, Sun Valley would respond offensively again in their half of the sixth, plating six more runs to make the score 14-4. A 1-2-3 sixth inning by Stanners would close the door on the Vanguard victory. In addition to strong pitching by Farnell and Stanners once again, several Vanguards stood out offensively. Jim Stigale was 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored, Andrew Machemer was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs, Kyle Misci was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs, Chris Pantle was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs, and Jarad Carney pitched in with a 2-run double. Farnell stole the show offensively as well as getting things done on the mound however, as he followed up an RBI single in the first with a solo home run to center in the second, a sacrifice fly to left center in the fourth, and an RBI double to right center in the sixth as he finished with 4 RBIs. Next up for Sun Valley (weather depending) is a home contest against Great Valley Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
Rustin Game Changed To Thursday
The Ches-Mont contest next week at Bayard Rustin, originally scheduled for Friday, April 17th, has been moved up a day to Thursday, April 16th because of the junior class trip. Game time is 3:45 p.m. at Rustin.
Vanguards Toppled By Coatesville
April 9, 2009
Fresh off their victory over Oxford Wednesday, Sun Valley's bats fell silent as they lost 9-4 to Coatesville Thursday. Coatesville got out of the gate early as they picked up an unearned run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. The score would remain the same through three innings as the Vanguard hitters went 9 up and 9 down. Coatesville would break the game open in the fourth via a 2-run home run and 2-run triple. Facing a 5-0 defecit, Tom Brennan finally broke through for Sun Valley with a lead off solo home run in the fourth. With the score 5-1, Sun Valley would again be the victim of walks and some clutch extra base hits by Coatesville as they cushioned their lead with 4 more in their half of the sixth to make it 9-1. Held to just one hit through six innings, Sun Valley's bats would finally come alive in the seventh as four straight hits by Sam Farnell, Andrew Machemer, Kyle Misci (RBI), and Max O'Malley (RBI) to lead off the seventh made the score 9-3. The Vanguards would tack on one more run, but it was too little, too late as Sun Valley fell 9-4. Next up for Sun Valley is an away contest at Downingtown East on Monday. Game time is 3:45 p.m.
Vanguards Defeat Oxford
April 8, 2009
Sun Valley picked up its second Ches-Mont win of the season with a 6-5 victory over Oxford on Wednesday. Glenn Stanners picked up his first varsity win on the mound with 5 solid innings of work. Sam Farnell picked up the save by working the last two innings and allowing just a single run in the seventh. Early on, it looked as if the Vanguards were snakebitten again while countless baserunners in the early innings were left stranded. Oxford would plate two runs in the second inning and another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead after four innings. A Sam Farnell RBI single scoring Kyle Misci in the fifth would cut the defecit to 3-1; however, Oxford would get the run back in their half of the fifth. With the score 4-1 in the sixth inning, the stage would be set for a Vanguards rally as they loaded the bases for the third time in the game with two outs. Up stepped Farnell who launched a triple to right center, that cleared the bases and tied the score 4-4. One batter later, Andrew Machemer would score pinch-runner Chris Nelson with a single to left. Farnell came in and set Oxford down 1-2-3 in the sixth before the Vanguards added a much-needed insurance run with two outs in the sixth inning on a successful double steal of home executed by Ryan Howe and Chris Pantle. Oxford would score a single run in the seventh on a ground-out but Sun Valley held on for the 6-5 win. Next up is a Ches-Mont contest Thursday at home against Coatesville.

Unionville Upends Sun Valley
April 1, 2009
On a wet and rainy day, Unionville upended Sun Valley by a final score of 10-5 Wednesday. Glenn Stanners, again the tough luck loser, started on the mound for Sun Valley and cruised through the first three innings before an error and a couple of base hits opened the scoring for Unionville with two runs in the fourth inning. The lead would be stretched to 5-0 in the fifth and 10-0 in the sixth before the Vanguards would finally respond with any offense of its own. A sacrifice fly in the sixth by Robbie Hughes made the game 10-1 and stretched the contest to a seventh inning. A seventh inning rally, however, plated 4 runs for the Vanguards. In the inning, Ryan Howe doubled, Sam Farnell plated a run with an RBI single, Andrew Machemer walked with the bases loaded to force in a run, and Jim Stigale plated two with a single up the middle. The rally came up short though as a fielder's choice and strike out ended the contest. Spoiled in the contest was a perfect day at the plate for Sam Farnell as he singled twice and doubled twice in four at-bats. The Vanguards now stand at 1-4 in Ches-Mont play and will take on Coatesville (Monday) at home and Oxford (Wednesday) away over the spring break. Both games are slated for 3:45 start times.
Vanguards Fall to Shanahan
March 30, 2009
Sun Valley dropped to 1-3 league play on Monday after a 6-2 defeat at the hands of Bishop Shanahan. The Vanguards jumped on the board early as a leadoff double by Chris Pantle, a sacrifice bunt by Jarad Carney, and an RBI single by Sam Farnell plated a run in the top of the first. However, a two-out error in the bottom of the first would knot the score up for Shanahan. Single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings would make it a 3-1 Shanahan lead before the game opened up in the fourth. Shanahan used 3 doubles and a triple in the fourth to make it a 6-1 contest. And, while Mike Kelly came in to go 6 up and 6 down in the 5th and 6th innings, a single run in the top of the 5th would be the end of the scoring for Sun Valley. Next up is a home game for Sun Valley against Unionville on Wednesday. Game time is 3:45. The Phillies raffle ticket drawing will also take place at the conclusion of the contest.
Kennett Tops Sun Valley
March 27, 2009
In their fourth game of the week and third league game of the week, Sun Valley came out on the short end of a 15-9 Ches-Mont contest at Kennett Friday. After a quick first two innings, Sun Valley jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the heels of a Sam Farnell three-run home run to right center field. However, the lead would be short-lived as Kennett quickly came back in their half of the third with four runs of their own. Two more runs in the fourth by Kennett would make the game 6-3 heading into the fifth. A Chris Pantle two-rbi double in the fifth would cut the lead to 6-5. However, Kennett would seemingly put the game away in their half of the fifth with eight runs. The 14-5 deficit would be cut to 14-9 with a grand slam to center field by Andrew Machemer in the sixth inning. Yet, that would be the end of the scoring for the Vanguards as an insurance run by Kennett in the sixth made the final score 15-9. Next up for Sun Valley is an away contest at Bishop Shanahan on Monday at 3:45.
Vanguards Pick Up First Ches-Mont Victory
March 25, 2009
Sun Valley picked up its first win of the season and first Ches-Mont League victory ever as the Vanguards topped Octorara 9-0 Wednesday. Sam Farnell took to the mound and was dominant in earning the win, going four strong innings, striking out seven, and giving up just one hit. Cody Lewis pitched a scoreless fifth and Mike Kelly finished the shutout, pitching the last two innings. Sun Valley scored its run early as they plated two in the second inning and seven in the third. Offensively for the Vanguards, Max O'Malley had a bases-loaded, bases clearing double in the third. Additionally, Chris Pantle drove in three runs with a two-run single and an infield groundout. Next up for Sun Valley is their first road Ches-Mont contest of the season as they visit Kennett on Friday at 3:45.
Avon Grove Tops Sun Valley In Ches-Mont Opener
March 23, 2009
Sun Valley opened its first season of Ches-Mont League play with a 4-3 loss at the hands of Avon Grove Monday. Avon Grove took an early 1-0 lead in the first and added another run in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Sun Valley would eventually plate one run in the fourth to make it a 2-1 contest. Avon Grove added what would turn out to be two big insurance runs in the their half of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead heading into the seventh inning. Sun Valley mounted a rally in the seventh as they loaded the bases with no one out. A walk to the next hitter forced in a run and made it a 4-2 game. A 1-2-3 double play would slow the Vanguard rally down, but a single with 2 outs got the game to 4-3 with men on 1st and 3rd. That would be all for Sun Valley though as a ground out would end the game. Glenn Stanners threw four plus solid innings in his varsity mound debut and was the tough-luck loser. Offensively, Andrew Machemer (double, RBI) and Jarad Carney each contributed two hits. Sun Valley will continue its quest for victory number one this season with a home Ches-Mont contest against Octorara on Wednesday at 3:45.
Sun Valley Drops Non-league Opener to Fords
March 21, 2009
Sun Valley dropped its 2009 opener by a score of 13-8 at Haverford High School on Saturday. Sun Valley jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first and held the lead until the bottom of the 2nd when Haverford, aided by walks and a miscue or two in the field, plated 4. As the momentum shifted, Haverford would ultimately take a 13-4 lead in the fifth inning before Sun Valley plated a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Although the Vanguards outhit the Fords and scored 8 runs which should have been enough to win the game, it was walks and timely hits by the Fords that would do the Vanguards in. In the loss, Andrew Machemer swung a hot bat and went 3 for 4, Jarad Carney reached base 4 times and had 2 hits and 3 RBIs, and Sam Farnell added a pair of hits.
Next up for Sun Valley is Monday's Ches-Mont League opener at home against Avon Grove. Game time is 3:45 p.m.
