Too much Tornado: Butler girls overwhelm young Raiders
JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley girls basketball team must have felt like it had crossed paths with an angry swarm of hornets.
Butler defenders seemed to be everywhere.
Just 52 seconds into the game, the Golden Tornado had forced three turnovers and were up 8-0 when Raiders coach Rob Lombardo called a timeout.
Moments later, Butler's run to begin the game was bumped to 10-0.
By the end of the contest, Butler had caused 31 turnovers in a dominating 73-38 win Monday night.
"That's what we do. That's our identity," Tornado coach Dorothea Epps said. "We knew that Seneca Valley is young and inexperienced, and, playing a section game on the road, we wanted to get off to a fast start."
The Raiders (1-11, 1-5) rebounded later in the opening quarter to cut Butler's lead to six points, but the Tornado answered right back and led 12 points entering the second period and 39-21 at halftime.
"We will give any team in the WPIAL a good 16 minutes of play at some point during a game," Lombardo said. "But we're just not ready to compete for an entire 32 minutes against a program as strong as Butler is right now."
The Raiders were without their top scorer, sophomore forward Alex Karika (10.6 points per game), who was at a college volleyball showcase in Philadelphia.
"She had a prior commitment and she told me about it at the beginning of the season," said Lombardo. "Honestly, with or without Alex, we lose this game by 30 points."
With the outcome of the game already decided, Epps emptied her bench in the second half.
"We've been trying to play a lot of younger girls because you never know who you're going to need later in the season," said Epps. "The last few games, we've started (freshmen) Cait Baxter and Mackenzie O'Donnell, and both of them have done a nice job."
Butler's Olivia Bresnahan led all scorers with 13 points, while Becky Nowacki and Casie Cygan each added 10 for the Golden Tornado (8-5, 6-0), who finished the first half of the Section 3-AAAA slate unbeaten.
"I like that the girls have bought into the idea to play defense first," said Epps. "At the beginning of the season, they were more concerned with the offense. They've learned that playing good defense can turn into offense."
Julia Vandrak paced the Raiders with 11 points.

Lady Tigers of NA prey on young Lady Raiders
Girls Basketball North Allegheny 65, Seneca Valley 37
After closing the first quarter with a 5-0 run that cut North Allegheny's lead to 12-10, the Raiders' turnover problems began.
Nine miscues in the second period helped the Tigers (7-4, 3-2) outscore SV 18-5.
NA's edge was 30-12 before Alyssa Miller's 3-pointer made it a 15-point deficit just before halftime.
"We've been working on slowing the game down for the girls, working on ball handling and passing," said Raiders coach Rob Lombardo. "What it comes down to is our basketball knowledge has to improve. We have to play with a higher basketball IQ."
Many of the turnovers came against NA's trap defense, but were unforced.
"We're giving the players a homework assignment," Lombardo said. "They can either go to a high school basketball game to do this or watch a college game. Each girl is responsible for watching how the player at her position deals with the trap."
Miller led the Raiders (1-10, 1-4) with 14 points and Alex Karika had 10.
North Allegheny's Alexis Aiken led all scorers with 22 points.
NA coach Sherri McConnell could not be reached for comment.

Char-Valley trounces SV
Girls Basketball Chartiers Valley 55, Seneca Valley 32
Seneca Valley coach Rob Lombardo was prepared for a bit of a letdown, but he wasn't expecting this.
A night after the Raiders notched their first win of the season with a 36-35 victory over Pine-Richland, the team found itself in a huge first-half hole against the Colts (7-4).
Chartiers Valley was up 25-0 before Brooke Clifford's two free throws with 6:14 left in the second quarter put SV on the board.
"I told the girls before the game, 'Last night was an emotional win against a section opponent. Now we're playing a nonsection game. There's going to be a letdown to start the game. Weather the storm and then just play basketball,'" said Lombardo.
"Little did I know we'd be down 25-0 at one point."
There was one major benefit literally right in front of the Raiders (1-9).
"Chartiers Valley plays the exact same style of basketball that we want to play," said Lombardo. "I told the girls who were not in the game at the time to watch this team because in two or three years, that's going to be us."

Lady Raiders defeat Pine-Richland in thriller!!
The Seneca Valley Lady Raiders won their first game of the season with a thrilling 36-35 win against Pine-Richland.

SV trailed 13-7 after the 1st quarter and then held PR to just 1 field goal and 5 total points in the 2nd quarter to tie the score at 18-18 at halftime.

In the 3rd quarter the teams battled and remained tied at 26-26 heading into the final quarter.

SV sophomore forward Alex Karika scored 7 of her game high 17 points in the 4th quarter which put the Lady Raiders in position to win their 1st game of the season.
With 21 seconds to go and the game dead-locked at 35-35, SV Junior Guard Kara Moyer was fouled and went to the line and calmly knocked down the 1st free-throw to give SV a 36-35 lead.

Pine-Richland missed a shot with 3.6 seconds to go but the ball was knocked out of bounds by SV. After a SV time-out, PR inbounded the ball and Abbie Altman launched a 3 point attempt that rattled in and out and SV secured the rebound and earned the victory.

The Lady Raiders were led by Karika's 17 points and 10 Rebounds; Junior guard Alyssa Miller had 11 points, and Freshman point guard Amanda Geiger added 4 points.

The Lady Rams were led by Abbie Altman's 9 points ( 2 - 3 pointers in the 4th quarter), Lisa Rader had 8 points, and McDarragh Minnock & Kathleen Humes each added 7 points.

Lady Raiders girls narrowly miss earning 1st win
The Seneca Valley girls basketball team almost welcomed the new year with its first victory of the season.
The Raiders (0-7, 0-2) led North Hills 38-35 entering the final quarter Monday night, and when Alex Karika got a shot to fall with 1:15 left in the game, the score was tied at 52.
From there, North Hills' Katy Turzak hit a bucket before the Indians turned a SV turnover into a free throw by Emma Wingerd.
The Raiders' Alyssa Miller had a chance to tie the game, but her 3-point attempt fell off the rim and Wingerd hit two more free throws with 11 seconds left to ice a 57-52 victory. Wingerd (17 points) and Turzak (16), both forwards, combined for 33 points. "We talked about it before the game. We needed big games from both of them," said North Hills coach Tom Sandherr. "We've come to expect that from those two." The Indians forced seven turnovers in the fourth period. "We went to a 2-2-1 zone in the fourth quarter," said Sandherr. "We were going to stick with that the entire quarter if that's what it took — even if we had to use 11 players."
A pivotal stat was rebounding. The Raiders held a 33-11 edge after three quarters, but the Indians (4-5, 2-1) won the glass 9-3 in the final eight minutes. "We are a very weak rebounding team," said Sandherr. "It's been our Achilles heel this season, but (Turzak) rebounded much better in the fourth quarter. "Between Wingerd and Turzak, we knew they would eventually get theirs," said SV coach Rob Lombardo. Through their first six games, the Raiders averaged 41 points per game, so Lombardo was pleased with the increased output.
Miller, Amanda Geiger and Karika scored clutch baskets to keep things interesting in the fourth quarter.
Karika scored a team-high 17 points, including 11 in the second half, and Karlei Fronzaglio added a trio of 3-pointers.
"Every team wants that one player who they can go to for the big baskets, but there are plays we run in which each of the five girls on the floor are capable of scoring for us," said Lombardo.
Eleven players saw action for Seneca Valley and Lombardo subbed in five players at a time. "It's something new we tried tonight," he said. "Our skill level is so widespread that we want to tire our opponents out."

A new direction: Coach hopes to bring winning back to SV

Seneca Valley's Alyssa Miller is the team's top returning scorer at 8.6 points per game as the Raiders prepare for the 2009-10 season under new head coach Rob Lombardo.

JACKSON TWP — Rob Lombardo's first season as head coach of the Seneca Valley girls basketball team doesn't officially begin until next week, but he's already put his stamp on the program.
The Raiders had only 15 players combined between varsity and junior varsity when the former ended the 2008-09 season with a 4-18 record, 3-9 in section games.
After three seasons as head coach, Kelly Mathews stepped down and Lombardo was approved for the position in May.
"Basketball needs to be fun again at Seneca Valley," said Lombardo, who was an assistant coach for SV's boys team the last five years. "This past summer, we had 29 girls in wanting to play, so the numbers are up."
The Raiders graduated Aly Eagle and Catherine Messmer. Eagle, a point guard, led the team in scoring last year (12.9 ppg) and tallied 40-plus 3-pointers.
Three players are looking to share the point this season: junior Kara Moyer, sophomore Karlei Fronzaglio and freshman Amanda Geiger.
"Karlei will probably start, but they'll all see playing time," Lombardo said. "As a group, I'm just hoping they grasp the system and consistently run the breaks."
That system will be different from what the Raiders are used to.
"On offense, we're going to run the floor, spread the floor, penetrate and kick," Lombardo said. "It's going to be more up-tempo than the girls have played.
"Defensively, we're going to play a lot of full-court press and half-court traps. When we do press, (senior guard) Gabby Allen will usually be out there. She's very quick," he added.
Senior Beth Talarico and junior Alyssa Miller, the team's top returning scorer at 8.6 points per game, both will see time at shooting guard.
"I've told Alyssa that we're looking for her to be our leading scorer this year," Lombardo said. "She understands that and is embracing the role."
A combination of juniors Angie Lalonde and Brie Sieminski and sophomores Alex Karika and Dani Fitzgerald will comprise SV's front court, which is small. Karika is the team's tallest player at 5-feet-9.
Lombardo is hoping for an extended season in his first year with the team.
"We're going to have to fight tooth and nail to get it, but our goal is to somehow, someway get that fourth playoff spot out of the section.
"We need to be consistent, stay steady and weather the storm when times get tough."
SV's Section 3-AAAA opponents include Butler, Shaler, North Hills, Pine-Richland, North Allegheny and Moon.
The Raiders open the 2009-10 campaign when they compete in the McKeesport Tip-Off Tournament along with Altoona and Penn-Trafford Dec. 11.
Lombardo will be assisted by Joe Gierlach, Kara Spagnola and Jane Leo.
