Spring Season Evaluation Day

On Saturday March 24th, MGSL officially begins our spring season. 10U players will be evaluated ahead of the draft while 8U & 6U players have the opportunity to train with the Midland High Varsity Softball Team.

10U - Evaluations begin at 5:45 pm and extend until 8:45 pm (players will receive an arrival time via email). To create evenly matched teams, all entrants to the 10U division will be evaluated by coaches ahead of the drafting of teams. All 9 and 10 year olds will be drafted onto a roster and 8 year olds who prefer to play up will be drafted as needed to complete teams.

8U - All players have the opportunity to train with MHS players and coaches from 7:00 pm to 8:45 pm. Parents of 8 year olds considering the 10U division should request a tryout by 8:15 pm.

Equipment Buying Guide

Helmets- Helmets should fit snugly on the player's head and must have a face mask. Chin straps are no longer required. Specific sizes vary by manufacturer, but generally include tee helmets (6U), junior helmets (8U & 10U), and senior helmets (13U).

Bats- As a rule of thumb, when standing with arms extended, the knob of the bat should reach the crease in the player's wrist. Generally, this corresponds to a 25 or 26 inch bat for 6U, 26-28 inches for 8U, 27-29 inches for 10U, and 29-32 inches for 13U players.

Fielder's Mitts- For young players, the ball is big & the hands are small, the largest glove that a player can control is generally best. As players age, infielders will want gloves that are relatively small while outfielders & 1B will benefit from a larger mitt.

Cleats- The only restriction placed on cleats is that metal spikes are not allowed in any MGSL games. Multi sport athletes should note that softball style cleats may not be used when playing soccer.

* Please note that MGSL provides coaches with team helmets, bats, catchers gear & fielder's masks.

I have been playing and coaching softball for 18 years.  I played school and travel softball in the Mount Pleasant area through high school.  I also began assisting coach teams and pitching clinics in Mount Pleasant while I was in school.  More recently I have been teaching pitching lessons to MidMichigan area softball players at Great Lakes Hitting Club in Saginaw.  For the past year I have been assistant coach for the Midland Lady Explorers under Charles Keeley.  All lessons are $30 for 30 min one on one sessions.  All pitchers need to provide a catcher for their lessons.
