Caine Set to Appear in Canadian Television Series 'Murdoch Mysteries'
September 28, 2011 — Redbirds starting pitcher Mike Caine was back on the ball field yesterday, however it was not at the usual home field of Bishops Cross Park. Instead, “a makeshift baseball diamond in the middle of an open field”, says Caine, as he describes the filming location for the Canadian drama television series Murdoch Mysteries.

Caine was chosen to film with the television series after responding to a casting call received by Redbirds first baseman Joel Nadel last week. After submission of several different player headshots by Nadel, Caine was selected as the lone man to attend filming.

The day started at 7:00 am in the Valens Conservation Area near Cambridge. After arriving on set, Caine was put right into wardrobe as they transformed him into a baseball player from the 1890’s. “They trimmed my hair a little and pasted on thick sideburns and a mustache”, Caine describes. The rest of the transformation was accomplished with a retro grey and navy-blue wool uniform complete with full leather belt, high socks, and three-quarter length jersey over top a white long sleeve shirt. It was certainly reminiscent of what would have been worn on a baseball field in the late 1800’s. Coincidentally enough, the late era jersey was also embossed with the number five on the left side of the chest – the same number that Caine wears for the Redbirds.

Once wardrobe was complete, filming started promptly on the replica 1890’s baseball field. The concept for the diamond was simple, as it was just an open field. “(They) basically just threw down four bases”, adds Caine. He would remain on set the entire morning. “I was on set from about 8:30 am to 12:00 (noon) filming the baseball scenes. I was on camera for quite a bit, however, I have no idea what footage they will decide to use or cut out”, says Caine. After breaking for a delicious buffet lunch there was a lot of waiting around until his next scene. “I basically stood around for 5 ½ hours watching them film other scenes. At 6:45 pm, they called us back on set to film another baseball scene. At 7:30 pm, the producer called it a wrap for the day and that was it.”

The plot of the baseball inspired episodes revolves around a rivalry of two police stations – Station 4 and Station 5. Caine plays the catcher for the Station 5 team. Being the catcher, Caine was able to dawn some old catching gear and a mitt that he describes as something you would find in a museum. “The equipment was amazing. I had a cage and a chest protector (, and) the gloves were leather hands”, he describes. “It was a long day, but worth it. It was a cool experience”

Murdoch Mysteries airs regularly on Citytv in Canada as well as Alibi in the UK and is syndicated to public television stations throughout the US. In addition it also airs in various other countries ranging from Australia to Italy. The scenes Caine took part in were being filmed for an episode titled 'Stroll on the Wild Side' part 1 & 2. They will air as episodes number 7 and 8 for the upcoming fifth season, set to premier sometime in the spring.

About Murdoch Mysteries: "Based on Canadian author Maureen Jennings’s popular Detective Murdoch novels, Murdoch Mysteries is set in late 1890s Toronto and explores the intriguing world of William Murdoch (Yannick Bisson), a detective using radical techniques for the time to solve the city’s most gruesome murders. Murdoch’s colleagues are coroner Dr. Julia Ogden (Hélène Joy, Durham County), a staunch ally who shares the detective’s fascination for forensic science; Constable George Crabtree (Jonny Harris, Hatching, Matching, Dispatching), Murdoch’s eager but sometimes naïve right-hand man; and Inspector Brackenreid (Thomas Craig, Coronation Street), Murdoch’s sceptical yet reluctantly supportive boss. The series has been sold in more than 100 countries worldwide."
