Players, Parents, and Coaches Meeting – TJCA Varsity Girls Tennis – 2009 – 8/18/09
-Welcome and Introduction – Coach Alan C. Carver –(history and background)
-Academics – Our first priority for our student/athletes will be their education. As student/athletes our goal is to focus on WHY we are at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy – (first and foremost, we are at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy to receive a high quality education). Sports, clubs, and other extra-curricular activities are secondary and icing on the cake – so to speak. Student/athletes will be required to get assignments on game (match) day BEFORE we leave for any Home or Away tennis match. It is the sole responsibility of the student/athlete to keep up with ALL assignments for ALL classes. Student/athletes may receive tutoring before or after school if the need (situation) arises.
-Practice – I believe in the old (tried and true) adage (philosophy) that as an athlete you will play as you practice. Therefore, we will make the very best use of practice time each and every day (Monday – Thursday) from 4:00 to 5:30 at Crestview Park in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. Practice will begin promptly at 4:00, unless otherwise noted. Any tardiness or late arrival to practice will result in running of the hill. (for example – 5 minutes late equals 5 minutes of running up and down said hill). You may not practice if you have been absent from school that particular day. You must be in school ½ day to practice or participate in a match. I will allow 2 excused practice days off for doctor or dentist appointments; however, please try to schedule your doctor appointments on Fridays – if at all possible. Non-excused absences from practices will NOT be allowed except in very extenuating or dire circumstances.
-Court etiquette (attitude) – As representatives of Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy, your families, your community, yourselves, and your coach proper court etiquette (behavior) will be displayed at ALL times. (practices and matches). As the Varsity Girls Tennis Coach at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy I will NOT tolerate bad court etiquette or a bad attitude from any of our players. (for example – racquet throwing, temper tantrums, slamming of tennis balls, cursing, or any other inappropriate behavior will result in the following: 1) immediate removal from the tennis court, 2)forfeiting of your match, and 3)a suspension from the Varsity Girls Tennis Team at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy. Parents and spectators are to exhibit appropriate tennis court etiquette (behavior) at practices and certainly matches. Parents may encourage their daughters during practices and matches but may not talk to them. Only a coach or assistant coach may talk (give advice) to a player during a tennis match at court change. Also any inappropriate behavior at school will result in disciplinary action by Coach Alan C. Carver. (for example – if you are suspended from school you will be suspended from the Varsity Girls Tennis Team).
-Sportsmanship – Sportsmanship will be displayed at ALL times by our student/athletes at Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy. For example – at the end of each match our Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Varsity Girls Tennis players will shake hands, at the net, telling their opponent(s) “good match” or words to that affect. Sportsmanship goes hand in hand with proper court etiquette.
