Tigers lose on Senior Night

NORTH EAST - The Rising Sun girls’ soccer team couldn’t have hoped for a better atmosphere on Wednesday night. Prior to the game, the Tigers honored their three seniors, forward Clorissa Jones, midfielder Deborah Ince and veteran scorekeeper Elizabeth Seydell.
After the ceremony, they played for the Susquehanna Division title and a chance to return to the Chesapeake for the first time since 2007.
Unfortunately for Rising Sun, No. 5 Harford Tech didn’t let the celebration continue past the final whistle. The Cobras netted a momentum-swinging goal in the final minute of the first half to break a tie and then added a huge insurance tally midway through the second frame of a 3-1 victory.
“I think we were in good shape at the beginning of the first half,” Tigers coach Sarah Rickards said. “The first 10 minutes of the second half, we came out ready to play. But, they’re faster than us. They wore us down until the end, and that’s what the difference was.”
Des Diamond opened the scoring for Harford Tech (8-2-1 overall, 7-0 division) in the seventh minute on a feed from Jackie Messenger. Moments later, Erica Coley received a golden opportunity to double her team’s lead, but her shot on a one-on-one chance with the keeper cleared the crossbar and sailed out of play.
Despite being dominated territorially, Rising Sun (7-4-1, 6-1) finally evened the score with three minutes, 30 seconds to go before the break, when sophomore Abby Hyland floated a shot in from the 18 along the right wing for her 10th goal this season.
However, the positive emotion was short lived, as Kaitlyn Schech boomed a direct kick from the 30 over the goalie’s head and into the upper-left corner of the net to restore the Cobras’ one-goal advantage.
A huge save by Brittney Lozzi on a cross in the opening moments of the second half preserved the lead, before Schech finished the scoring with an assist from Diamond with 19:48 left in regulation.
The win gives Harford Tech its second Susquehanna title in three seasons and a date with top-ranked C.M. Wright in Monday’s UCBAC Championship game in front of a home crowd.

GREAT JOB PRIDE!!
The Pride played their first game in the Premier division of PAGS missing key defensive players and keeper Audrey Baldwin. Anj and Jess Martin stepped in to fill defensive roles and did a phenominal job. Jess ran down two Fusion forwards who had a breakaway, making key plays and saving goals. Jenna Bowen stepped in to fill the vacancy in the goal and had a stellar game. The Pride goal was scored four minutes in when Erica made a run to the corner and made a beautiful cross to the far post. Taylor was on the post and headed in a perfect goal. Great job to all!!
CONGRATS CLORISSA!
FROM THE CECIL WHIG:
Girls’ Soccer
Clorissa Jones, Rising Sun
As a freshman, Jones burst onto the Cecil County girls’ soccer scene by netting 21 goals. Injuries slowed the Tiger dynamo down the past few years, but coach Sarah Rickards expressed a belief prior to this season that Jones, now a senior, would return to form.
After being held scoreless in a season-opening loss to Patterson Mill, Jones did exactly that – exploding for six goals in a 10-1 victory over Oxford (Pa.) on Wednesday.
“She’s a leader on the team, so if she can get her stride then everyone else kind of follows,” Rickards said. “Her drive was there again (against Oxford). I don’t think her skill ever went away. I think just the drive and the want were both back.”
