On this date in 1973 Ron Blomberg of the New York Yankees become the first designated hitter in major league history. In his first plate appearnace. Bloomberg walked with the bases loaded off Luis Tiant. The Red Sox won the game, 15-5.

In 1997, San Francisco Giants outfielder Glenallen Hill became the first National League player to DH in a ragular-season game. The game marked the inaugural game in interleague play, as the Giants faced the Texas Rangers at The Ballpark at Arlington.
