HANOVER, N.H. -- The Dartmouth JV football squad displayed plenty of offensive firepower on Sunday afternoon, overwhelming the club team from the University of Vermont on Memorial Field, 57-3. Freshman Conner Kempe was next to perfect, completing 10 of his 11 passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns, while fellow first-year player Brad Dornak amassed 96 yards receiving on four catches, three of which culminated in the end zone.
Dornak's touchdown receptions were of 53, 28 and 13 yards, the latter two coming from Kempe. The bomb was delivered by junior Max Heiges, who hit on 4-of-6 passes for 102 yards. Sophomore Tanner Scott accumulated the most catches with seven for 93 yards, and freshman Garrett Babb contributed a trio of receptions, one of which was a 31-yard scoring strike.
The three Big Green quarterbacks on the day went 17-for-22 for 287 yards and four touchdowns with just one interception. Sophomore Will Deevy started behind center, completing three passes for 49 yards.
The running game was just as stout, and perhaps even more so. Freshman Nick Schwieger galloped for 99 yards on just six carries, one going for 46 yards to the end zone. Sophomore T.J. Cameron added a nine-yard touchdown run, and freshman Chris Hardy was the workhorse on the afternoon with 15 rushed for 60 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The defense proved to be stingy all day, yielding less than 100 yards of offense to Vermont and picking off three errant passes. The leading tackler was freshman Chad Hollis with nine.
Freshman Matthew Kelly also booted a 24-yard field goal for Dartmouth. Vermont's lone points came on a 22-yard chip shot field goal by Josh Henshaw.
The jayvees won't play another contest for nearly six weeks when they will scare up a game against the Harvard JV squad on Friday, Oct. 31 on Memorial Field at 2 p.m.

2008 SEASON OUTLOOK
August 19, 2008
With the 2008 season upon us, let's take a look at what the Cats are up against.
Gone is head coach Darren Haynes and the semipro football league Vermont played in last year. With the firing of Haynes, the Cats lose more than a dozen years of coaching experience and the west coast offense in favor of David Motherway: a coach with one year of experience as Haynes' assistant. By leaving semipro football in favor of a more club-friendly schedule, also gone is the radio and newspaper coverage enjoyed by the 2007 team. This is because while locel media covers semipro football, they do not cover club sports.
The offense returns all but one starter: offensive lineman Mark Raimo. QB Drew Trombley should retain his starting job in the new triple-option offense where his mobility will be a plus. While the option attack benefits teams, like Vermont, who have smaller and more mobile linemen, this run-first approach could backfire.
In only one game last season did the Catamounts have a 100-yard rusher and only twice did they rush for 100 as a team. The strength of the 2007 team was the recieving of TE Tim Snow and WR Sean McKenzie, but their roles wil likely diminish with the option in place. McKenzie, however, could be a big threat as a runner this year.
Defensively, injuries took a toll in 2007, but this unit also returns 10 starters for 2008. The heart of the 2007 squad, look for the defense to step up big again. With shut-down CB Marc Bucklin and ferocious pass rushing DE's Brian Trudell and Justin Rhuda, the Catamounts have a solid core. But the most valuable player could once again be FS Tyler Jackson, who set a semipro football record in interception return yards last season and led the team with seven interceptions: three of which went for touchdowns.
The schedule should be slightly more balanced in 2008 since the Cats only face one "adult" semipro team this year. Opoonents in 2008 will be other college students with similar sizes and years of experience as our own players. The question mark is whether or not Vermont can match these "recruited" Division III players athletically. Vermont does possess a good deal of speed, but will the size down the offensive and defensive lines be a factor?
2008 Prediction: 3 Wins, 6 Losses
Although the schedule will be more managable, it comes down to coaching. We feel that a run-first, wishbone style offense will help opponents expose the Cats' biggest weaknesses: the undersized offensive line and lack of a breakaway runningback. If the defense can come up big again early and keep a few games close, the win total could increase by one and possibly two. But until Coach Motherway proves himself, we'll be conservative.
