VILLA PARK HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL

May 10: Foothill 5 - Lady Spartans 2
Brianna Rice scored both the Lady Spartans' runs in losing to Foothill 5-2. Bri crushed a home run over the left field fence in the 2nd inning, then scored on an error in the 7th off a grounder from Jezz Portillo. Madison Kinley and Sarah Little added singles to complete the offense for VP.

Defensive Gem of the game came in the top of the 6th. With the bases loaded and only one out, Foothill's lead-off batter flew out to center fielder Kaylie Ruel. After the catch, Kaylie fired home. Sarah was there for the relay to throw a Foothill runner out to Kaci McGinnis to make the tag. Honorable mention goes to Jessica Hudson. In the top of the 7th, Foothill's clean-up hit a shot to right. J-Hud picked up the grounder and threw the runner out at first to Sarah. Nice team work ladies!

Last game of the season is this Thursday. It's Senior Day! Everyone come out and cheer the seniors on as they play their last game as a VP Lady Spartan. Pre-game activities will begin around 3:00, so come early!
May 5: Lady Spartans 1 - Foothill 6
The Lady Spartans suffer another tough loss as the Win goes to Foothill today, 6-1. In a game that was close for the first 4 1/2 innings, VP struck first scoring in the 3rd. Foothill did not score a run until they had a 5-run rally in the 5th. Foothill added a run in the 6th. Aside for the 1 bad inning, it was a 1-1 ball game.

Kaylie Ruel led the offensive attack going 2 for 3 with 2 singles and Jessica Hudson scored the teams only run after she singled to get on base in the top of the 3rd. Grace Rose singled to load the bases with J-Hud and Kaylie, then Kaci McGinnis singled to left driving home Jess. Jessica Zepeda got some running practice as a pinch runner for Sarah Little in the top of the 6th. Jezz Portillo batted for Brianna Rice in the 6th getting to 1st on a fielder's choice that forced JZ out at 2nd.

Defensive gem today goes to Lisa Cadogan at 3rd base. Foothill's #8 hitter smashed a hard grounder down the 3rd base line in the bottom of the 2nd. Lisa made a great back-handed grab falling to her knees robbing the hitter of extra bases, then Lisa got up and threw the runner out at 1st. Great play Lisa!

Only 2 games left folks. Come cheer the girls on next Tuesday and Thursday at Player's Field. And don't forget, next Thursday is Senior Day. Come one, come all!
Apr 28: Lady Spartans 3 - El Mo 8
Jessica Hudson crushed her first home run of the season and reached base on errors twice plus scored another time to lead the VP offensive attack, but it wasn't enough as El Mo wins at home 8-3. Lisa Cadogan had a nice double to right center, and Grace Rose & Sarah Little both added singles for VP. The Lady Spartans kept the game close with a see-saw battle through the top of the 5th when El Mo ralled for 4 runs taking a 7-3 lead in the bottom of the 5th.

The Defensive Gem came in the form of an unsual double play courtesy of Chantal Oelrich, Kaci McGinnis, and Sarah Little. In the bottom of the 6th with bases loaded and nobody out, El Mo's #5 hitter grounds one to Chantal. Chantal quickly throws to Kaci to get the force at home. Kaci in turn fires to Sarah at first to complete the double play. Honorable mention goes to Kaylie Ruel. In the bottom of the 3rd with a runner at 2nd, El Mo's #6 hitter drives a single up the middle. The runner at 2nd tries to score on the hit but Kaylie scooped up the grounder and fired home to Kaci to stop the run.

Next contest is Thursday May 5 at Foothill. After that, there's only 2 games left and both of those are at Player's Field: El Dorado Tuesday May 10 and Brea-Olinda on Senior Day, Thursday May 12. Come out and cheer the girls on, especially the seniors on Senior Day.
Apr 26: Esperanza 7 - Lady Spartans 1
Jessica Hudson scampering around the bases on Kaylie Ruel's single to center provided the Lady Spartans' only run in a 7-1 loss to Esperanza.

Terri Van Dagens started strong against Esperanza only surrendering 1 run in the first 3 innings. Esperanza rallied to score 4 in the 4th plus 2 more in the 5th to rack up 7 runs on the day.

The Lady Spartans were able to get some hits like Kaci McGinnis' double in the 1st plus singles by Brianna Rice and Grace Rose.

Only a few games left, so come out and give the girls all the support you can. Next contest is Thursday Apr 28 at El Modena.

Apr 21: Lady Spartans 2 - Canyon 10
The Lady Spartans were hanging tough with Canyon through 4 innings until Canyon erupted for 5 runs in the 5th. They added 2 in the 6th to make the final score Canyon 10 - Lady Spartans 2.

Sarah Little scored all VP's runs when she belted her 2nd home run of the season with Kaci McGinnis on 2nd having walked earlier. Nicole Day and Jessica Hudson accounted for the rest of the hits for the Ladies.

Next contest Apr 26 at home against Esperanza. Come on out and cheer the girls on!
Apr 19: Lady Spartans 3 - Brea Olinda 4
Although the Lady Spartans out hit Brea 12-6, Brea scored 1 more run than VP. Final score Brea 4 - VP 3.

VP had a nice 3rd inning where they scored all their runs. Sarah Little and Brianna Rice both singled. Madison Kinley stepped up and ripped a double to left center driving home Sarah. With 2 out and runners at 2nd and 3rd, Jessica Hudson singles to center driving in Bri and Maddie.

The Lady Spartans' 12 hits were spread across the team very well. Sarah went 2 for 3, Maddie went 2 for 4, so did catcher Kaci McGinnis including a double in the 6th to left center. Singles were provided by J-Hud as noted above, Grace Rose, Lisa Cadogan, Bri, Chantel Oelrich, and Kaylie Ruel. That means everybody got a hit. Well done girls. Just got to make the hits a bit more timely to get those runs in.

Next contest: Thursday Apr 21 at Canyon.
Apr 14: Lady Spartans 6 - El Dorado 7
The Lady Spartans took one on the chin Thursday afternoon at El Dorado HS. After taking the lead in the top of the 7th with a 3-RBI double by Chantel Oelrich to take a 6-5 lead, El Dorado loaded the bases and scored 2 on a walk-off single to win 7-6.

In a close game from the beginning, the Lady Spartans were fighting to the very end.

Kaci McGinnis hit 3 for 4 scoring twice to lead the offense today. Madison Kinley went 2 for 3 plus a walk scoring the go ahead run in the top of the 7th. Others getting singles include Lisa Cadogan, Brianna Rice, and Kaylie Ruel. And don't forget about Chantel's hit. Talk about coming through under pressure! Down by 2 runs, 2 outs, bases loaded, Chantel hits a line drive to left field with enough English on the ball to carry over towards the left field line. Nice clutch hitting.

Bri went the distance for VP recording 6 strikeouts in the effort.

Next contest is at Brea Olinda on Tuesday April 19. Hope to see you there...
Apr 12: Foothill 2 - Lady Spartans 3
A combination of errors and singles proved lethal to Foothill as the Lady Spartans rallied in the bottom of the 8th to take a 3-2 win over Foothill. Sarah Little homered, singled and scored the winning run while Brianna Rice went 3 for 4 including driving in Sarah with her walk-of single in the bottom of the 8th to lead the VP offensive attack.

Additional offense came in the form of singles provided by Grace Rose, Kaci McGinnis, and Madison Kinley who drove in Lisa Cadogan for the tieing run in the bottom of the 8th.

Bri went the distance recording 7 strikeouts in the contest.
Apr 9: Brea 8 - Lady Spartans 1
Kaci McGinnis doubled and scored in her first at bat to provide the Lady Spartans only run in a tough loss to Brea Olinda.
Apr 9: Peninsula 1 - Lady Spartans 3
Grace Rose went 3 for 3 and Brianna Rice struck out 10 as the Lady Spartans bats started waking up and the defense knuckled down in a 3-1 win over the Peninsula Panthers.
Apr 6: El Modena 7 - Lady Spartans 0
Chantel Oelrich recorded the team's first hit in the bottom of the 6th to spoil El Mo's no-hitter. Kaci McGinnis had reached first on an error in the 4th inning to stop their perfect game. The majority of teams played to date have been high calibre and highly ranked teams, and some times it just takes time to get settled and confident against that kind of competition. The bats will come to life soon...

The defense did OK for the most part. Brianna Rice recorded 5 strikeouts on the day. And other than one mishap, all the playable balls were handled very well.

The Lady Spartans will play Peninsula at 8:00 AM this Saturday. Win or lose, VP plays again at 5:00 PM that afternoon against either Elsinore or Brea Olinda. If VP wins, the Ladies will be playing for 5th place in the Bronze bracket.
Apr 4: Lady Spartans 0 - Beckman 5
The Lady Spartans got some hits and got a lot of base runners, but couldn't put together the right combination of hits at the right times to push some runs across the plate in a 5-0 loss to Beckman Monday. Sarah Little led the offensive attack going 2 for 4 with a couple of singles. Grace Rose, Kaci McGinnis, and Brianna Rice all recorded singles. Brianna teamed up with Terri Van Dagens in pitching duty to limit Beckman to 6 hits, but their's came at the right times to ring up some runs.

The loss puts the Lady Spartans in the Bronze consolation bracket in this Saturday morning's game at 8:00 on Field 4 against Peninsula. Win or lose, VP will play their next game at 5:00 PM that afternoon.
Apr 2: Lady Spartans Lose 2 in Woodbridge Tournament Pool Play
The Lady Spartans couldn't get the bats going in the Woodbridge Tournament pool play Saturday. VP lost Game 1 to La Habra 6-2, and Game 2 to Chino Hills 6-0 in 6 innings.

Game 1: La Habra was leading 2-0 going into the bottom of the 2nd when VP battled back and scored twice. Madison Kinley started the rally with a single, then stole 2nd with Kaci McGinnis batting. Kaci doubled to left center scoring Madison. Jessica Zepeda came in to run for Kaci. Nicole Day stepped up to the plate and laid down a sacrifice bunt. The third baseman made a bad throw to 1st so Nicole was safe and Jessica scored on the mishap. Two innings later La Habra rallied for 4 runs in the 4th making the score 6-2. VP got hits from other Lady Spartans like Grace Rose's single in the 1st, Brianna Rice's double in the 3rd, and Kaylie Ruel's single in the 5th. Other than 1 bad inning, the game was close.

Defense was pretty strong, except for the 4th inning. Brianna Rice went the distance and led the defense striking out 7 for the Defensive Gem. There were several other very defensive plays the Lady Spartan supporters were very proud of. Watch the video below to see some nice defense and Lady Spartan Game 1 highlights.

Game 2: Madison Kinley singled and doubled for 2 of the Lady Spartans 3 hits against Chino Hills HS in Game 2 of the Woodbridge Tournament. Lisa Cadogan singled to lead off the 4th for the other hit. The Defensive Gem was Lisa's pop foul catch in the 1st inning. Catching for VP, the #2 batter attempted a bunt and fouled one of those bloop fouls that runs away from the fielder. But not for Lisa. Lisa took 2 steps and dove for the ball making the catch. Honorable mention goes to Grace Rose for another great catch on the run towards the foul line in deep left field in the 3rd inning.

The losses puts VP in the bronze bracket. The Lady Spartans will play Beckman in the quarterfinals to determine consolation or championship bracket play on Saturday April 9.
March 31: Lady Spartans 2 - Esperanza 10
Grace Rose started the game with a leadoff double, and Madison Kinley singled and doubled going 2 for 3 on the afternoon to lead the Lady Spartans in hitting in a tough loss to highly ranked Esperanza 10-2. Unfortunately VP was not able to get the rest of the bats going on Thursday.

The bats are sure to get cracking this weekend as the Lady Spartans play 2 games, the first at 8:00 against La Habra and game 2 at 12:30 against Chino Hills. Both games are on Field 3. Depending on how the girls do Saturday will determine their start time Monday, which will be either 3:00, 5:15, or 7:30 PM.
March 29: Canyon 8, Lady Spartans 0
Canyon Hills erupted for 6 runs in the 5th inning, all with 2 outs to take a commanding lead en route to a 8-0 shutout against the Lady Spartans at Player's Field Tuesday. Terri Van Dagens, along with good defense, held the Commanches scoreless through 4 2/3 innings until Canyon went on a hitting streak.

Offensively, the Lady Spartans couldn't get the bats going. Jessica Hudson got her second double in two games, so that was nice to see. Grace Rose, Lisa Cadogan, Sarah Little, and Kaci McGinnis all recorded singles in the game.

The Defensive Gem came in the top of the 5th, courtesy of Sarah Little. With a runner at first and the #2 hitter at the plate, the batter tried to sacrifice to advance the runner. Instead, the batter tapped a little blooper about 10' in front of home plate. Sarah Little, charging the bunt, dives and stretches to catch the pop-up just before it hits the ground. The runner at 1st was already at 2nd when Sarah raised up to her knees and threw to 2nd baseman Jen Betian covering first. Nice double play ladies! Honorable mention goes to the relay team of Brianna Rice, Jen, and Kaci who threw a Canyon runner out at home trying to score from 2nd base but was ruled obstruction at the plate. Nice play anyway girls!

Next game is Thursday at Esperanza High School. Come on out and show the girls some VP spirit and help them battle strong against a tough Esperanza team.
March 24: Lady Spartans 2, Sunny Hills 5
The Lady Spartans weren't able to get the bats going against Sunny Hills as they take the loss 5-2. Kaci McGinnis led all hitters going 2 for 3 with a double and a single in her 3 at-bats. Jessica Hudson doubled and walked, and Grace Rose singled in Jen Betian in the 5th who was hit by the pitch for the Spartans' first run of the game. Kaylie Ruel who was on base on a fielder's choice scored from 2nd on the same play due to an error by the center fielder.

Brianna Rice went the distance striking out 4 and walking 1.
March 22: Lady Spartans Split Two with Woodbridge
The Lady Spartans should great resolve Tuesday afternoon as they outlasted Woodbridge HS in 9 innings to take the first game of a scheduled double header 4-3. Game 2 was a bit different with VP losing to Woodbridge 9-2.

Game 1: After 3 scoreless innings, VP got on the board first scoring 2 in the top of the 4th. Jen Betian singled with 2 outs, followed by a single from Jessica Hudson. With runners at 1st and 2nd, Brianna Rice doubled driving in Jen and Jessica. Woodbridge scored 3 times in the bottom of the 4th. The score remained 3-2 Woodbridge until the top of the 7th. Madison Kinley tripled to left and scored courtesy of Kaylie Ruel's 3rd single of the game sending the contest into overtime. In the top of the 9th, Kaci McGinnis hit a drive over the right fielder's head and with her speed legged out her first home run of the season earning her Offensive Player of the Game. Lady Spartan defense led by Terri Van Dagens, who pitched the entire 9 innings, shut down Woodbridge in the bottom of the 9th for a 4-3 win.

Game 2: The Lady Spartans were unable to rally the troops in Game 2 against Woodbridge losing 9-2. VP started a comeback in the 3rd inning. Down 7-0 and coming off a 1-2-3 defensive top of the 3rd, Bri singled to left. 2 batters later, Grace Rose singled and so did Kaci. With the bases loaded, Sarah Little had a clutch hit single up the middle scoring Bri and Grace for the only VP runs in the game. Offensively, the Lady Spartans were only able to generate 5 hits. Bri led the team with 2 singles going 2 for 3. The remaining singles were hit by Grace, Kaci, and Sarah.

Next contest, weather permitting, is Thursday March 24 at Sunny Hills HS in Fullerton. After the game is the Varsity - JV team dinner followed by the VPHS Dancing with the Teachers extravaganza. Come one, come all to see Coach Smith, Coach Petrella, and Kaylyn De Los Reyes will be performing in Dancing with the Teachers at 7pm.

Next week is the beginning of conference play when the Lady Spartans host Canyon on Tuesday March 29. Come on out and cheer the girls on!
March 15: Lady Spartans Come Back 6-5 Over Tesoro
In a great come-from-behind win, Brianna Rice belts a 2-run double in the bottom of the 7th with 2 out to raise the Lady Spartans over Tesoro High School 6-5. It took a while for the bats to get hot, and by the 4th inning VP started rockin' & rollin'. Lisa Cadogan, Jen Betian, Jessica Hudson, and Bri all scored in the 4th. J-Hud recorded 2 RBIs off a bunt that the Tesoro pitcher threw away trying to get the force on Lisa running to 3rd scoring Lisa and Jen. Jessica was forced home when Nicole Day walked. Bri, who singled to get on base, scored off Kaci McGinnis' single.

In the 7th, Lisa started the inning with a double. Jen walked for the 3rd time. With runners at 1st and 2nd, Bri doubled both Ladies home for the team's first walk-off hit of the season. A single, 1 run scored, and a game winning hit earn Bri Offensive Player of the Game. Way to go Bri!

The Defensive Gem of the game was turned in by Kaylie Ruel playing left field. The leadoff in the top of the 7th hit a soft fly to short left center. Kaylie, running at full speed coming in on the ball makes a great catch for out #1. Honorable mention goes to Lisa Cadogan. After some recent struggles, Lisa handled 6 ground balls and a line drive without an error. Excellent effort Lisa!

Terri Van Dagens got the nod to pitch. Terri struck out 2 and threw better than a 2 to 1 strike to ball ratio with 57 strikes and 25 balls. Nice control!

Next game: Tuesday March 22 at 3:15 PM hosted by Woodbridge HS.
March 12: La Habra 5 - Lady Spartans 1
The Lady Spartans were able to get 4th place out of a tournament of 16 teams during the 2011 Brea High School Tournament. The Lady Spartans started out looking good but were not able to maintain the momentum as VP lost to La Habra in the 3rd place contest Saturday afternoon. Terri Van Dagens went the distance striking out 5, but La Habra kept up their offensive attack winning the game 5-1. Madison Kinley notched a double to deep left field, and Kaylie Ruel scored the teams only run in the 1st inning.

Next game: Tuesday March 15 at 3:15 PM hosting Tesoro at Player's Field.
March 11: Laguna Hills 3 - Lady Spartans 0
The Lady Spartans couldn't get the bats going enough Friday night as they lose to Laguna Hills HS 3-0 in the semi-finals of the Brea Tournament. Brianna Rice went the distance striking out 5 giving up 3 runs, 1 of them earned. Bri threw 69 strikes out of 102 pitches. Nice control Bri!

Offense wasn't as strong as it's been in previous games. Singles provided by Kaylie Ruel, Lisa Cadogan, and Jen Betian. Jen and Madison Kinley both doubled.

Defensive Gem came in the top of the 6th with a runner on first. Laguna's #7 hitter attempted a bunt and popped a little blooper behind Kaci McGinnis catching. Kaci sprang up, caught the popup, the whirled and threw a bullet to Jen Betian covering 1st to double up the runner at 1st. Excellent heads up play Kaci!

The Ladies play La Habra (again!) for 3rd place Saturday March 12 at 1:00.
March 9: Lady Spartans 4 - Northwood 6
The Lady Spartans suffered their first loss of the season in a non-conference contest with the Northwood Timberwolves, 6-4, on Wednesday. The game was close through 3 1/2 innings (1-1) when Northwood scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th. VP scored 1 in the 5th and another in the 6th to get within 1, but the Timberwolves scored 2 more in the bottom of the 6th to widen the lead to 6-3. VP scored one in the 7th, but weren't able to get anymore. Final score, 6-4 Northwood.

Defensive Gem of the game was delivered by Kaylie Ruel playing in left field. In the bottom of the 3rd with 1 out, Northwood's #3 hitter crushes a long fly ball to deep left field. Kaylie makes the grab at full speed with a last second lunge to record the out. Well done Kaylie! Honorable mention goes to Brianna Rice playing center field. Northwood's #3 hitter (again) crushed one to the fence in right center. Bri tracked the ball to the fence, makes the catch and falls through the fence. Nice effort Bri!

Offensive standouts include Lisa Cadogan going 3 for 4 with 2 singles, a double, and scoring in the 2nd. Jen Betian got hit by a pitch, laid down a sacrifice bunt she beat out to first, singled & drove a run home in the 5th, then doubled and scored in the 7th. She was driven home by Jessica Hudson's single to center. Madison Kinley was 2 for 3, walked, and scored in the 6th.

Next matchup is Friday night for the semi-final game against Laguna Hills. Game time is 7:00 PM. Consider coming a little earlier just in case the umpires decide to start early. Win or lose, the Lady Spartans will be Saturday at 1:00 PM for either the Championship or 3rd place. It's going to be a great weekend for softball.

And don't forget the Spring assembly Friday morning starting at 9:30. The Lady Spartans have worked long and hard on their dance routine. Come out to the assembly and cheer them on!
March 5: Lady Spartans Go 2-0 at Brea Tournament
Saturday March 5 marked the opening of regular season softball for the Lady Spartans. And the Ladies started the season nice and strong. The offense took care of business in both games.

Game 1 La Serna 2 - Lady Spartans 6.
Game 2 Lady Spartans 7 - Sunny Hills 4.

In Game 1 Sarah Little went 2 for 4 with a single, double, and 2 RBIs to lead the Lady Spartans to a 6-2 win over La Serna earning her Player of the Game (offense) honors. Kaylie Ruel went 2 for 3 and scored in the 5th, Grace Rose scored twice while Lisa Cadogan & Jessica Hudson each scored. Brianna Rice singled & scored in the 5th, walked in the 1st pushing Lisa home, and laid down a nice impromptu sacrifice in the 3rd.

Bri went the distance recording 5 strikeouts in a very nice 5 hit performance.

Defensive Gem in Game 1 was turned in by Grace in the top of the 3rd. A long fly ball by their #9 hitter to deep left center sent Grace sprinting at full speed to catch the ball on the run for the 2nd out of the inning. Honorable mention goes to the battery. In the top of the 4th with a runner on 1st, Bri throws a pitch (wild or intentional - you decide) way outside. The ball ricochets off the backstop right to Kaci who throws to Madison Kinley getting the runner out trying to steal 2nd. Nice play!

In what was a very exciting and intense contest from the first pitch, the Lady Spartan offense came through again and again to eventually overpower a very strong team from Sunny Hills in Game 2. Lisa Cadogan's 2-run monster blast over the left field fence in the top of the 1st taking a 2-0 lead put enough fear into the Sunny Hills coaches that they intentionally walked Lisa the next 3 at bats. Must be some kind of record. Sunny Hills scored twice in the bottom of the 2nd. Jen Betian drove in Lisa and Sarah in the 3rd with a 2-out 0-2 count triple to the RF corner to move VP ahead 4-2. Sunny Hills tied it 4-4 in the 4th. In the 7th, still tied 4-4, Sarah Little drove in the go-ahead run when she singled to right sending Kaylie Ruel home from 3rd. With Kaci McGinnis at 3rd, Sarah at 2nd, and Lisa at first, Jen singled to left center driving in Kaci and Sarah to take a 7-4 lead.

Jen went 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs with a single and a triple earning her Player of the Game (offense) in Game 2. Other offense contributors include Sarah who singled in 3 out of 4 at bats, scoring 3 times, and picking up an RBI. Lisa went 1 for 1, but was on base all 4 plate appearances. Way to rack up the OBP girl! Lisa also scored twice. Kaci and Kaylie both singled.

The Defensive Gem came in the bottom of the 5th in true teamwork fashion. With 2 outs and a runner at first, Sunny Hills #5 hitter sliced a hot ground ball up the middle. Shortstop Madison Kinley dives and makes the grab a couple feet from 2nd base. With the runner at first coming into 2nd hard and fast, Maddie flips the ball with her glove to Jen covering 2nd to record the force out. Excellent teamwork! Honarable mention goes to Kaci, Maddie, and Sarah catching the batter runner between 1st and 2nd in a rundown for the 3rd out before the runner at 3rd could score. Excellent!

Pitching was handled in teamwork fashion as well. Bri started the game, then after 2 complete innings, Terri Van Dagens took over in the top of the 3rd. The girls surrendered 7 hits and 4 runs, 2 of them earned, as Terri gets the win in Game 2.

With the wins, the Lady Spartans have earned a spot in the semi-finals. VP plays Friday night at 7 PM on Field 2. Win or lose, the follow up game will be played Saturday at 1 PM. If they win, the Lady Spartans will play for the championship on Field 1. If they lose, they play for 3rd place on Field 2.
March 2: Pre-season Ends with Two More Wins
The Lady Spartans, led by Sara Little's 2 home run blasts, won both short games at the Valencia High School double header Wednesday. These wins conclude a very successful 5-1 record in the pre-season. Video highlights provided below.

In Game 1, Sara's 2-run dinger over the centerfield fence with Grace Rose at 2nd base was all pitcher Brianna Rice and the Lady Spartan defense needed to shut-out the Valencia Tigers in 3 innings, 2-0. Brianna gave up only 2 hits and struck out 4 in 3 innings for the win.

Game 2 against the Katella Knights turned very favorable for the Lady Spartans in the top of the 2nd when 15 batters stepped in the batter's box and racked up 9 runs off 6 hits including Sara's 2nd home run of the day. Her 3-run shot cleared the left field wall with room to spare. VP's defense held the Knights to 2 hits until the bottom of the 3rd when they scored on a mishap to spoil back-to-back 3-inning game shutouts. Terri Van Dagens got the win in Game 2 recording 2 strikeouts and giving up 3 hits in the 10-1 victory.

Offensively for the day, several girls were on a roll. Sara, besides the 2 home runs, also singled and walked going 3 for 3 scoring twice and driving in 5 runs. Jessica Hudson went 2 for 2 with a single, double, a walk and scored twice. Jen Betian hit 2 for 3 and scored on a well executed squeeze play by Terri. Madison Kinley drove in 3 runs in Game 2, one on a sacrifice fly to deep left center, and 2 on a double to center field. Besides calling two excellent games behind the plate, Kaci McGinnis scored twice in Game 2.

Aside for great pitching, the defensive gem of the day belonged to Lisa Cadogan. With one out in the bottom of the 3rd in Game 1, Valencia's #2 hitter sliced a scorching line drive down the 3rd base line. Lisa backhanded it faster than you can blink an eye for out #2. Grace Rose made a nice catch on the move in deep left field to record the final out of Game 1.

Next up, the 2011 Brea Olinda High School Varsity Softball Tournament starts this Saturday. The Lady Spartans take on the La Serna Lancers at 1:00 on Field 2. The winner plays again Saturday night at 7:00 on Field 1 against the winner of the Capo Valley - Sunny Hills matchup. The loser of our 1:00 game won't play again until 3:00 on Thursday March 10. Bring your sunscreen and your best voice - it's going to be a great day for softball!

Saturday's Double Header Canceled
February 26, 2011 The double-header at Valencia today is canceled. We will be playing Valencia on Wednesday and Katella on Thursday.
Feb 4: Lady Spartans Surprised by La Habra Highlanders 11-0
It was a new and powerful Highlander team that visited the Lady Spartans Friday Feb 4. The La Habra team compiled 11 runs with 12 hits catching VP off guard in a 11-0 scrimmage.

The Lady Spartans were able to generate 3 hits: singles by Lisa Cadogan and Jessica Hudson. Madison Kinley ripped a nice double to left center. The only real scoring opportunity came in the 2nd inning when Jessica Hudson stepped up to the plate with 2 outs. Jessica drove the first pitch up the middle for a single. Madison then stepped in, and on her first pitch, hit a line drive to left center advancing Jessica to 3rd. Brianna Rice tried to drive Jessica in but she hit her first pitch to center field for the catch and the 3rd out.

Despite the score, VP had a couple dandy defensive plays. All 3 outs in the 4th inning were earned the hard way. With runners at 2nd and 3rd and nobody out, Rocky Carbajal got the batter to hit a ground ball to Lisa Cadogan at 3rd base. Instead of throwing to 1st for the easy out, Lisa threw home to Kaci McGinnis to make the tag. The runner reversed direction and headed back to 3rd. Kaci fired to Madison Kinley at 3rd base for the tag. Madison turned and fired to Jen Betian at 2nd base in time to tag the runner returning to base. Next batter up doubled up the middle. The following batter hit a single up the middle toward center field. Brianna Rice charged the grounder, scooped it up and fired a one-hop bullet to Kaci at home to tag the runner trying to score from 2nd. The last defensive gem came with no one out in the top of the 6th. With runners at 1st and 2nd, the batter hits a grounder Chantal Oelrich at short. Chantel throws the batter out at first to Kaci. Kaci alertly throws to Nicole Day covering third to tag the runner at 2nd base trying to get to 3rd on the play. Denied! Bri struck out the last batter to end the inning.

Feb 2: Lady Spartans Shutout Woodbridge Warriors 7-0
Rocky Carbajal, Terri Van Dagens, and Brianna Rice combined for a 3-hit shutout as the offense blasted 12 hits for a 7-0 commanding win over the Woodbridge Warriors. The offense was really on its game with 12 hits including 3 doubles: 2 by Lisa Cadogan and 1 by Jen Betian. Kaylie Ruel and Kaci McGinnis both went 2 for 3. Kaci scored twice while Kaylie, Grace Rose, Lisa, Jen, and Jessica Hudson each scored once.

The defensive play of the game came in the 2nd inning. Flyball to left center had Kaylie running and diving to try to make the catch. Kaylie didn't catch it, but Brianna Rice had her back and when the ball got by Kaylie, Bri was there to get the ball and throw the runner out at 2nd base trying to squeeze out a double. Excellent defense!

Another excellent outing by the Lady Spartans. Don't miss the last scrimmage Friday when VP hosts the La Habra Highlanders at 3:15 at Player's Field. The Lady Spartans beat the Highlanders Tuesday 4-3 so La Habra will be looking for revenge. Come on out and cheer for your Lady Spartans!
Feb 1: Lady Spartans beat the La Habra Highlanders in Scrimmage #2
The Lady Spartans rallied in the top of the 6th to pull out a 4-3 win over La Habra Highlanders. Kaylie Ruel scored in the 1st on a wild pitch. The score remained 1-0 until the 4th inning when La Habra scored 3 from a home run over the left center field fence. With the score 3-1 in the Lady Spartan's top of the 6th, Terry Van Dagens started the rally with a ground ball error to the Highlanders pitcher. Jess Zepeda followed with another error off the pitcher. Two batters later, Chantal Oelrich singled to left almost scoring Terry. Grace Rose stepped up and grounded to the pitcher causing another error which allowed Jess to score. Kaylie Ruel singled to left driving in Chantal. Kaci followed with another single to left scoring Grace for the 3rd run of the inning. Chantal, pitching to La Habra with runners at 2nd and 3rd in the bottom of the 6th and two outs, got the last batter to ground out to her to end the inning and the game. Final score: VP 4 - La Habra 3. Nice come back ladies...

Next game: Feb 2 vs Woodbridge at Player's Field. See you there!
Jan 26: Orange Lutheran Defeats VP in Scrimmage #1
The Orange Lutheran Lancers were hosted by our 2011 Lady Spartans on January 26. Brianna Rice started for VP and went 2 scoreless innings only giving up 1 hit and 1 walk. Chantal Oelrich followed up for 2 innings and gave up 4 runs, 3 of them earned. Rocky Carbajal pitched the 5th and 6th innings giving up a hit and a walk. In her Varsity pitching debut, Freshman Terri Van Dagens came in the top of the 7th facing Lutheran's heart of the lineup. After a popup to short, Terri struck out their #4 hitter watching the called 3rd strike. Their #5 hitter singled to left, and after 7 pitches, Terri got the #6 hitter looking at strike 3. Offensively, the Lady Spartans were able to manufacture 2 runs. Madison Kinley scored VP's first run in the 5th inning where she took advantage of Lutheran's right fielder dropping her flyball racing all the way to third. Maddie then scored on a scorching ground ball by Jessica Hudson (just kidding on the scorching part - it was a slow roller the first baseman decided to let roll hoping it would veer foul). In the 6th inning, Rocky singled to left, then scored on a passed ball while Terri was batting. Final score: O Lu 4 - Lady Spartans 2.
