COFFEE WITH COACH FARLEY: OFFSEASON CHAT
THE 2011-12 OFF-SEASON...

Good morning everyone. I've got my coffee here and some time so I thought I'd write a little bit this morning. Sorry I've haven’t blogged here lately. I promise to take more time to communicate on here. I want to take an opportunity to explain a few of the things we do to as a football program to assist in the development of our student-athletes. As spring nears, we begin looking to Track and preparation for the 2012 football season. As a whole however, at Vinton-Shellsburg I wish all of our programs well and encourage their development. I'm a coach who believes in working with other coaches to develop athletic ability. Whether they are a male, female, football player or otherwise. As a coach and teacher, it is my responsibility to provide opportunity for athletes to train and develop their abilities regardless of what sport that is.

Since October, the opportunity here at V-S has never been better for athletic development! The HS weight room is open every school day after school 3:30-4:30, and M, W, F mornings from 5:45-6:30. Coach Matt Finn who is an exceptional motivator, and knowledgeable strength and conditioning coach is assisted by Coach Chvala and I in the PM, and I head up the morning sessions. All three of us have various strength and conditioning certifications and have a good working knowledge of our program, technique, motivation, and safety above all else. The program we utilize, is scientifically proven to make your son or daughter a better athlete regardless of the sport. It is tailored to the athlete specifically, and puts them through small group workouts that generate benefits. We max out every 6-7 weeks and generate a new revised program that builds upon the progress they've made. New exercises are introduced and taught at this time to prevent plateau. We learned of this program when I went to Solon and spent the afternoon with Kevin Miller over there. It is purchased from a company called Performance Therapies (see link below) out of Coralville. It is research based and instructed by some of the top athletic trainers in the country. Coach Finn, Chvala and I have learned from them and done our best to implement it. It works, it's efficient, it's not complicated, its here for us fully installed ready to develop athletes.

Our numbers have fluctuated but steadily improved over the last 3 years in the weight room. But we're not where we want to be. Every head coach has been encouraged to make this program part of his or her training but this is still developing. The bottom line is this.

1. Your son/daughters coach may or may not utilize this program as part of theirs.

2. Regardless, we have the weight room open enough that they can get workouts in if they desire. Many in season athletes join us on their own and develop themselves utilizing our program.

3. If parents get behind this effort and encourage their children to join us regardless of what their in-season coach is doing, it will benefit them.

4.FAQ's
"Why is the weight room is not open?"

"We don't know what the hours are?"

"What is this program?

"The parents are out of the loop" "

"Why aren't all coaches making this part of their program?"

I feel like I've answered most of these but let me expand a bit. The weight room is open and has been open. The hours are all over this website, coaches and current athletes circulate these times as well. To help bridge the communication gap here, we will be mailing out a Football newsletter in the spring and again in July. I wish all of our coaches chose to implement this into their programs. But there are things I can control, and things I cannot. I will be writing again soon regarding our 9-12 football outreach programs, Spring-Summer football organization, and the leadership corps. Hope you all have a great super bowl weekend!

GO VIKES!

10/4/2011 Marion & Anamosa
These two games could not be more contrasting. Marion beat us because they were Marion and we didn't really want to play football that night. We were up for Homecoming against Anamosa and did not let the festivities distract us. I was disappointed with the slow start but the finish more than made up for it. Our secondary played very well with 4 INT's from Rickels and Ferguson and Darrin Charlier had a great TD catch offensively. The OL lead by seniors Ryan Webster, Luke Kearns and Zach Latting came alive and took control of the LOS, Brandon Tharp compiled 2 sacks and Gunner Tranel had another great night offensively and defensively. There were several highlights from the Anamosa game and overall it was a a lot of fun.

A problem that we have right now is a lack of commitment and toughness by some of our players, this distracts the team from improving. We continue to preach staying together and working hard. The leaders on this team need to step up, take control and make this their team . The uncommitted players need to shore up their mentality and lead, follow our get out of our way!

We now sit at 3-3 and have an opportunity to make our playoff run and lock up a winning season. It all starts with CPU this week! We need to focus in, take it one week at a time, and improve every practice.

9/18/2011 Western Dubuque
I didn't have a lot of complaints about how we played last Friday night. We bounced back after a thrashing at Maquoketa and played some pretty good ball against another very good team. We need to improve on Special Teams and Defense as these are the facets of the game that we truly lost against the WD Bobcats. It's no secret that we're a little banged up but that cannot be an excuse. It's part of the game and we need to continue to get better every week. This week is Marion @ Marion for their homecoming. Both schools are participating in a Cancer Awareness project which is always a great thing to be a part of. Now, that does not mean this game is between friends. We have not beat Marion in 13 years and the time is now. Their physical and like to run the ball as are we. If we have another good week of practice like last week, and if we improve from last weeks game we can beat the Indians.

9/12/2011 Maquoketa
Maquoketa was good and we didn't show up. This is where football teams get tested we have been beat down and now we have to see if we're the type of team that stands up and fights, or lies down and folds. I know this team is better than we played Friday. We have to regroup and get back on track. Western Dubuque is a good team. But, we got em' at home and we plan to have a great week of practice and PREPARE.

9/3/2011 South Tama
2-0. This is where we wanted to be. The non-dist. games do not mean a great deal in the grand scheme, yet they are wins. Wins usually bring confidence and confidence enables players to play hard. STC is much improved from 2009 and boy did they have speed. Fortunately we were able to come out on top of them and stay on top of them. We wore them out which is always a nice way to win. Yet, we have much work to be done. Now is where it all begins to count. We have goals this year and in order to achieve them we have to take it one week at a time, and focus on the weekly task at hand. To defeat Maquoketa.

Last year we beat them in a very tight game 38-36. They will remember, and be ready for us. So, we must avoid any sort of over confidence and make it our task to improve. We need a great week of practice, and heavy focus as we travel the long drive there and face our first district opponent. The good news is that we get Kearns back this week which puts us almost at full health for the first time this year! Injuries are just a part of the game.

Our boys did a lot of things right against STC. A beautiful Riffey-Rickels pass, hard inside running from Edwards, Tranel, Merchant, and Ervin. OL play improved, and another good defensive showing. Devries, Draker, and Yerkes were very salty on the DL

Maquoketa's offense will be the best we've seen yet with a lot of speed. we will need all hands on deck! But we beat em' once and I believe we can run right at em' and beat em' again! If we improve this week and every week, watch out for this 2011 V-S Viking football team! These guys can play ball!

8/26/2011 BENTON

WOW! I'd rather not open with such a heart pumping, nail biting game, but a W is a W and we'll take it. The V-S and Benton faithful sure got their money's worth. Captains Gunner Tranel and Nolan Edwards were the life blood that kept us in this one. Not only with their play, but with their leadership keeping the team focused on the prize. We had some injuries before the game that forced us to move some guys around and during the game we lost Luke Kearns after the first drive which was a huge loss for the OL. Several guys had to step up playing both ways the entire game and second team guys were pushed into service. Overall many players stepped up, stayed together, and found a way to win.

Benton was BIG and PHYSICAL like they always are. They dominated the LOS most of the night behind Rathje, they won the turnover battle, and had superior special teams play. We won this game as a result of defensive will, heart and determination from the kids. Game 1 you will always have mistakes and we have to clean ours up. Kickoff needs revamped, OL and DL play needs help, we have to focus on our assignments and polish our technique, and we need to get healthy. We're hoping for the return of Kearns and 2010 All-District DB Darrin Charlier this week. We're making to many silly mistakes and South Tama is on the rise coming off of a big win. We need to get better every week from here on out to reach our goals as a team. It will be good to play at home on our field that once again looks great this year due to plenty of TLC and seasonal care from Coach Struve and the grounds crew. New scoreboard, new lights, new football season. OUR GOAL THIS WEEK IS TO GET A WIN FOR ALL OF THE V-S COMMUNITY AND PUT SOME PRIDE BACK IN THE HEARTS OF THOSE THAT ARE STILL HURTING FROM THE STORM. The first 50 fans through the door Friday night get a V-S football window decal. (One per family)

Here's to beating Benton and a great 2011 Football Season!!

7/5/2011 VSFB MIDTERM SUMMER TRAINING REPORT

I always feel like the July 4 holiday marks half time of summer break. It certainly is a benchmark almost a warning that football will be here before we know it. This summer marks the second full summer that I've lived here in Vinton working the summer training off season to prepare the football team for the upcoming season. For the first time we participated in a 7 on 7 league at Coe College playing Don Bosco, Belle Plaine, Linn-Mar, CR Jefferson, Cascade, and North Linn. We ended up 3-3 had a blast, and installed and applied some new schemes. The weight room and SAQ sessions having been going well but we're still far from 100% attendance. Several players have also been working out at Mark Erickson's Kettlebell Advantage which is great training as well.

The coaches have been teaching positions classes for the DL, OL, DB, QB's, and RB's this summer. Attendance has been good and those players that do make it regularly are learning plenty. Not only about their position, but about the game of football. The weekend of July 22, 23, and 24 will be a busy one for us. The coaching staff will be attending the ISU-IFCA clinic in Ames the 22 and 23 and on the 24 we're taking several of our lineman to the ICCC lineman clinic. The best in the State in my opinion. Captains practice August 1,2,3 and Camp 4 and 5. August 8 marks the first practice day and August 11 we pad up! Look for our August practice schedule to be on the website soon.

I have a lot of confidence in the 2011 V-S Viking football team. These boys already have a lot more experience than last years team. The 2009 season was so senior heavy that we asked a lot from our younger players last year as many we're thrown into varsity action. I'm hoping this will pay dividends as we return around 13 starters of which 6 or so are both way players. Last year we returned about 4 starters. Our leadership corps have been attending the VSFB leadership seminar once every 10 days or so. We discuss and learn about high quality leadership and lately have been developing our goals and vision for the 2011 season. The Captains and Squad Leaders are getting anxious to apply what they've learned. Be that as it may we need to be as productive as possible through July, have a great August and prepare for the heated rivalry of Benton on August 26. This is what we plan to do!

Look for our Gold Cards which will be going on sale August 4 and 5. We have another great card full of local discounts and the funds help us tremendously providing for all V-S football teams grades 4-12.

I hope you all are having a great summer and getting a chance to relax. Fall and football will be here soon and we're working hard to ensure that the games you come to will be rewarding.

Stay cool

2/1/2011 A LITTLE TRIP TO SOLON

I met with Kevin Miller after the holidays to talk a little football and check out their program. He was a great host and took the time to show me what's under the hood in Solon. We went to their weight room and there was an impressive number of athletes their working out. One thing that jumped out at me was the number of both girl and boy athletes working out side by side. They have installed a great strength and conditoning program there that is part of the fabric of virtually all the different sports. Kevin put this S & C program into application after the 2001 football season in which the Spartans went 3-6. The next year 2002 they were 10-2!

I sat with Coach Miller and picked his brain for a couple of hours. He completely explained all that Solon does both offensively and defensively schematically. However, a recurring theme throughout our conversation was not neccesarily football startegy, schemes, x's and o's, demographics or even coaching.

I learned that It is the CULTURE at Solon that makes it special. All of the athletes and coaches have formed a united front and essentially work together toward year round success. Therefore, winning is expected, reinforced, worked for, and everyone has an investment. Winning means more to them because they've annually worked harder for it and so has all the other sports.

"The harder you work in the off season, the harder it is to quit during the season"
-Vince Lombardi

Yes, Solon has had some great talent, and they're coaching is exceptional. They're recent dominance and demographics help them attract other athletes. But there are some bottom lines here. Solon has 70-80 dedicated individuals that form into a HS football program and strive to better themselves and be part of something bigger then themselves. I personally know some young men who want to be part of something like this and are working toward that end. The problem is not all of our athletes are under this influence of aspiring greatness. We need to develop societal, cultural, expectations for our athletes. We need year-round training to be normal and popular at V-S and apathy abnormal, and unpopular. We need to EXPECT hard work, discipline, and commitment from them.

Coach Miller and others at Solon took it upon themselves to create an environment that generates successful expectations. This in turn has evolved into similar expectations from the parents of athletes in the homes in Solon. The athletes are surrounded by coaches, friends, parents, and community members who expect them to prepare for upcoming seasons.

Solon Football has not always been a powerhouse. They set a goal, stick to the basics, focus on fundamentals, and expect victory. They've achieved greatness through hard work, time and persistence.

There is no reason that what happened in Solon can't happen here at Vinton-Shellsburg. My job as a head coach is to work with the other coaches and the administration to build a winning culture. Not just for football but for all sports. There are a few things happening with our Strength and SAQ programs that will give us a chance to adopt a Solon model. I know we as an athletic department can do a lot better. I believe V-S can and will be a championship football program and this in turn will help generate other championship programs.

I'M A BELIEVER!

-Coach Farley

11/17/2010 A LITTLE TRIP TO EMMETSBURG

Wednesday, November 17 Coach Chvala and I hit the road to take a trip to Emmetsburg. One of the HS FB Mecca's of Iowa. Our program philosophy is largely based on theirs. The difference is that they are an accomplished program and have been for 40 years. Under Coach Twait, Steen, and Dunlap, the E-Hawks have won 9 State Championships in 3 different classes. They are the envy of high school football. I usually make a trip there every year. However usually not in November. We wanted to meet with Coach Tom Steen former D coordinator and head coach at Emmetsburg, and currently LB's coach at Iowa Central Community College. We arrived around 7:00 after leaving Vinton at 3:50. The town of Emmetsburg just feels like football, one can feel the tradition as they enter town. This time round one can also see that Emmetsburg is a winter wonderland as it was one of only a few towns in NW Iowa hit hard by the winter storm last week. With over 16 inches snow accumulation, it was a quick reminder that winter in Iowa will be vast approaching eastern Iowa soon. Coach Chvala and I joked that this must be a divine punishment to the town and to the E-Hawks for only going 11-1, being undefeated district champions, and getting to the quarter-finals playoff, round and not being State Champions :)

I remember driving into E-Hawk territory as an Assistant coach at Fort Dodge St. Edmond. As we entered town I remember seeing signs along the highway proclaiming that that we were now enter E-Hawk country, and that E-Hawk country represented several State Championships. A rival team then moves toward Duane Twait field through several blocks of tailgating parallel to that of any college town. awaiting the visitors are 2,000 plus fans thumping their feet in a synchronized E-Hawks ! E-Hawks! chant. Most games played here are over before they begin.

Then there are the E-Hawks themselves. A football team made up of year round training, who are bred of a fanatic football tradition. Their offense, a ferocious quick huddle nightmare for opposing defenses. Their defense seems to reproduce immediately as soon as the ball is snapped, they're everywhere, unblock-able.

Coach Chvala and I knew that at that end of this year we had to get a defensive tune up. Since our defensive scheme comes from Emmetsburg, that is where we went to seek guidance. However Coach Steen goes south to Arizona for the winter and his daughter is pregnant and due any day. So this Wednesday night in November was the only window we all could really slip into. Tom and his wife had maid rites, chips, and home made cookies for us. It was a great meal. The 3 of us then spent the next 3 hours in Tom's basement figuring things out. And figure out we did. Coach Steen made it his task that night to analyze, interpret, and fix what we needed fixed. Leaving there, Coach Chvala and I both agreed that this was time well spent. We could not have had a better session and learned more. We left Emmetsburg with renewed confidence and a few tricks up our sleeves for next year. 3.5 hours later we were back in Vinton going to bed with visions of Vinton-Shellsburg Football Championships dancing in our heads.

Here's To Vinton-Shellsburg,

Coach Farley

CONGRATULATIONS TO GUNNER TRANEL ON HIS NOMINATION TO THE 2012 SHRINE BOWL NORTH TEAM
We will all get to watch Gunner Play one more time wearing V-S gear this summer as he represents our school at the 2012 Shrine Bowl.

July 21 - Game: 7 PM Jack Trice Stadium in Ames
Gates open 5:00 PM.

The Iowa Shrine Bowl Game is an all-star football game between selected pre-college football athletes on each side of a north-south dividing line in Iowa.

The players are selected by a process of nomination by coaches, balloting by state-wide sports media professionals, and official invitation from a representative of the Iowa Shrine Bowl.

The Iowa Shrine Bowl produces this game each year. The game brings honor and recognition to the players, their schools and their communities. It has also been an effective tool in raising money for Shriners Hospital For Children.

The 2012 game will be the 40th Annual Iowa Shrine Bowl Game. To date, the Iowa Shrine Bowl has raised over $2,000,000 for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. Funds for Shriners Hospital For Children are developed by ticket sales, advertising in the Shrine Bowl program, merchandise sales, contributions and sponsorships.

CONGRATULATIONS TO GUNNER TRANEL ON INA 2ND TEAM ALL-STATE NOMINATION
Congrats to Gunner on his nomination to the INA All-State football team. This adds to his impressive resume including three 1st Team All-District nominations.(09, 10, 11) Tranel has been a great football player here at V-S as well as a solid leader, Captain, student ,and team player.

We wish him nothing but the best as he moves toward his college football career. Gunner will be missed next year, but his legacy has already inspired many others to prepare in the off-season, and play the great sport of football like it was meant to be played.
THE 2011 VSFB SEASON
This season did not turn out how we wanted it to. There are a couple of different ways we can look at this. Was it the injuries? Was it an inability to play physical football as a result of losing so many players including a captain? These questions divert attention away from the real value of high school sports. The real questions here are: Did the players learn things about themselves that they both like and dislike? Have they learned a few valuable lessons in resilience and determination? Did they learn how to overcome fear and fight through adversity? I believe in many cases the answer is yes, especially in the case of these seniors.

Regardless of wins or losses I’m extremely proud of this team. The leadership was strong, and a lot of the success we had on the field can be directly attributed to those players that invested so much time off the field. I want to thank my coaches who invest so much and do not get the credit they deserve and especially the wives who stand by and watch there husbands get abducted for 2.5 months. I want to also thank the parents and fans for supporting these players, and being there for us on Friday nights. All the people who work the chains, the gate, the announcing, the concessions, the administration, and the grounds crew, the band and the cheerleaders. It takes a lot of people doing a lot of different things to put together a football season and every one of those people deserves a huge thank you.

Senior Reflections:

Kyle Mcabee-Kyle had waited all year to have his shot at playing defense and we all looked forward to seeing him utilize his great ability to hit. This was cut short by a Tim Tebow impersonation jump pass in gym class breaking his ankle. He did come back and play surprisingly well later in the season and was very glad to see that at least he was able to get a few more pops in before his football career here ended.

Jake Stodola-Another victim of injury, Jake showed promise at DB and SE before he hurt his foot. He was smart in coverage and was missed almost immediately when they told him he probably would not play anymore early in the season.

1st Team All District DB: Darrin Charlier-By far one of the most under rated players of this years and last year’s football team. Now a 2 x All-District selection, Darrin will be best remembered for his clutch abilities to perform when necessary. A game wining INT to beat Maquoketa last year, several short passes for 1st downs and he’s a very physical and fundamental tackler. I was glad that he finally got to experience a TD pass this year as he frequently complained that he’d probably never get one.

Kelly Wagner-Kelly came in and made immediate contribution to her football team and was desperately needed for PK duties. She came through for us in many kicking situations and took on a mountainous challenge of being the only girl on a football team. Her gender never made a difference as she is one of us and always will be. Everyone was better off on this team with her on it except for Luke Kearns.

Lincoln Riffey-Lincoln has been the starting QB @ V-S for 2.5 years now and has been our field general since he was thrown into the Marion game as a sophomore in 2009. He has provided us with some great memories of beautiful footballs in the air for TD passes. Lincoln will be missed next year as we look for a new QB next year for the first time in 2 years.

Matt Devries-Matt has started in more positions than anyone else on the team. FB, HB, WLB, DE, and SS. and has always done we’ve asked him to. I have fond memories of him starting as a sophomore in a 2009 Benton game where he played a key role in that win.

Captain Nolan Edwards-Nolan’s career was cut short this year after a brilliant first two games amassing nearly 400 yards rushing and 5 TD’s. His game winning INT in OT against Benton was amazing. No one knows why these things happen. Nolan worked harder in the off-season than anyone and to be sidelined by an injury such as a collarbone is sad. But Nolan was with us every step of the way this year and was every bit as valuable as anyone else on the team helping out many other ways. Nolan was robbed of an opportunity to be every bit as accomplished as a Logan Williams or a Clint Ferguson. But I never heard him feel sorry for himself, he never acted petty, and he was always there for his teammates. That makes him great in my book.

1st Team All-District LB: Captain Gunner Tranel- I’m not sure I even need to write much here. Words don’t do any justice to what Gunner has provided to this years team and this football program. If you’ve seen even one game in the last 3 years here you know whom I’m talking about. All speed, all strength, all on the field, all plays all the time. This has lead to 3, 1st Team All-District nominations and I’m betting All-State this year as well. He has been an invaluable part of football here at V-S and I wish him nothing but the absolute best at the next level. Any younger player wanting to know what it takes to be a great football player should fashion themselves after a Gunner Tranel.

Matt Walton-Matt was another player who really had to step up to compensate for for juries and he did a solid job. He held up well as an undersized LB this year and made some nice plays through out the season. He was on most special teams as well with good contributions.

2nd Team All-District OL: Zach Latting-Zach I must admit took a lot of harsh advice from me through out his career her as an OL. I coach the OL and therefore am harder on them than probably anyone else. Zach came into his own this year and his strength lied in his ability to pull. His pulling ability created many plays wherein he became a bowling bowl leading the way. Several times pins did fall! I was proud when he made the 2nd team All-District list this year.

2nd Team All-District OL: Ryan Webster- Ryan is a great story. He’s one of the most balanced players I’ve ever coached. Fairly fast, fairly tall, fairly strong, etc.. Therefore, going into the season when asked about what position he would play this year? He would usually get as a response something like “OL, DL, DB or maybe TE or WR” He never once complained about where we put him. When it was decided that he was needed at Center, he gritted down and did his best. Often facing NT’s and blitzing LB’s that were 50-100 lbs. more than he, still he rarely got beat, and kept a fantastic attitude throughout the season. Ryan was very coachable and a joy to work with fighting through injuries that would’ve sidelined most other players.

2nd Team All-District DL: Josh Yerkes-Josh looked like he may be an alternate at the beginning of the year first before he immediately made an impact in the Benton game. He would start and play hard the rest of the season making several key tackles. Josh has a very good motor and you would be hard pressed to find a time when he took a play off. Josh has a great smile and lightened the mood when things were getting tense. He will be missed on the DL.

Matt Hart-Matt is another player who stepped up when needed to this year. Matt put in a tremendous amount of work in the off-season and it payed off as he was much improved this year as an OL. Matt also had the ability to lighten the mood a bit when we all needed a good laugh.

Kody Corum-Kody was a solid player who really contributed in giving us a look each week on the scout team DL. He caused a lot of havoc to the OL week in and week out. Kody challenged the OL to get better and challenged players to find their best.

1st Team All-District OL: Luke Kearns-Luke is another player who played some as a sophomore and has gotten better every year. He really made a difference this year with his his OL and DL play. His strength is his strength and head to head few opposing lineman won against Luke.

Brendon Cox-Brendon has been our camera man/manager for 3 years and will be sorely missed next year. He’s devoted countless hours of his own time to be a part of this team and hi service is greatly appreciated.

2011 CENTER POINT URBANA STORMIN POINTERS (1-5) SCOUTING REPORT
CPU will be coming to Vinton this week with their first win of the season over Marion. They have had to endure a brutal schedule and are now beginning to reap the benefits of being toughened by it. They are an I formation team with several other schemes at work. They have a bruising running game and use some tickery as well. (See reverse play below) Defensively they work out of a 4-4/6-2 look. They live and die by the blitz and tilt their nose guards into the A gaps. They will surely seek to stop our running game by being extremely aggressive on defense. CPU is playing their best football right now and I believe we are as well. This is an instant rivalry with the close distance of CPU!

2011 MARION INDIANS (3-1) SCOUTING REPORT
Tony Perkins has reloaded another capable football team dropping only one lose to Western Dubuque 7-0. The Indians narrowly beat Mt. Vernon and Benton and smashed Anamosa last week. The Indians are having us over for homecoming this year and they plan to run right at us. They work out of the Power I and Wishbone and love the power running game. Marion's offense will run off tackle, FB trap, Isolation, some option, and plenty of misdirection too. Their cross buck play is one of their favorites (See Below) They have a good backfield featuring #28 Colton Storola. They have a big line and a decent QB who can make throws out of the shotgun and play-action. It will be another match up of strength versus strength this week.
2011 MAQUOKETA CARDINALS SCOUTING REPORT (1-1)
Maquoketa comes in 1-1 after routing Mt. Vernon 37-0 and losing to 2010 semi-finalist West Delaware by a narrow margin of 3. They work out of their spread offense with plenty of speed and returning most of their team from last year. They were ranked in the top 10 in both the Des Moines Register and the Gazette pre-season. Their QB and HB cross each other in the exchange out of the shotgun creating Trap, Toss, Play-action, and Option plays. (See Trap Below) Their passing game is deadly as well attacking through the air on a number of different routes. We'll have to pressure the QB and stop them often to keep this high power offense at bay.

Defensively they work out of the 3-5 and 4-4. The will blitz us a lot and we have to be ready. The bus trip over there is long so we need to make sure we stay focused and go to Maquoketa ready to play! Look for contrasting defenses and offenses here and may the best team win!

CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO FROM LAST YEAR'S GAME.

2011 SOUTH TAMA TROJANS (1-0) SCOUTING REPORT
Coach Hoskey in his second year at the helm has his team off to a fiery start as STC trounced Saydel 53-23 in week 1. They look very similar to last years team working out of the spread mostly with a pass first philosophy. They have a very good QB who can make the throws and scramble given the opportunity. The will also line up in the 3 back stack I and pound it or play action pass during short yardage situations (See Below). Our DL and DB's will have to be disciplined and determined to keep this offense in check.Defensively the play a 3-5 with a lot of LB stunts. They play aggressive and have good depth. We have an opportunity to go 2-0 for the first time in several years here at V-S. We need to take advantage of this. But STC will be ready to play and so must we. We can not afford the mistakes made against Benton.
2011 BENTON COMMUNITY BOBCAT SCOUTING REPORT
Benton Community is lead by a new coach this year, Clay Anderson out of Albert Lea, Minnesota. His teams there ran a lot of option and spread offense passes. They return some good lineman including a pre-season All Stater Robert Rathje. Benton traditionally has a good ground game and this is what we anticipate seeing from them here. They have a lot of tradition and the rivalry wil be hotter than ever as we go to Van Horne. Look for a game where the defenses are the key in controlling this games outcome.

Iowapreps.com 2011 Vinton-Shellsburg Team Overview
Overview By Luke Fedderson

After beating Maquoketa early in the fall, Vinton-Shellsburg's loss to Dewitt ended up costing them an opportunity to make a run to the playoffs. A large and now experienced crop of seniors hopes to continue their winning ways but finish the job by pushing this club to the postseason. Sixteen total starters are back in the fold and each is hungrier than ever to get the job done. Gunner Tranel is their top returning athlete and he could make a run at All State honors if he can match the production he posted as a junior. He finished with over 40 more tackles than his teammates and also recorded 14 stops for loss. The Vikings will need to sure up their lines and find someone to replace Logan Williams at running back but this club has a great deal of potential.

About The Coveted V-S Iron Man and Winter Iron Man Awards!
I AM IRON MAN!

The Iron Man Award is earned by those Viking football players who commit themselves to a rigorous off-season workout program. The opportunity to earn this award begins late April - early May and ends early August. around the time football officially begins. Iron Men complete 49 workouts facilitated by and documented by coaches. Track & Field participants can earn workout credit during certain Track practices. It is a testament to the hard work and determination of a player. When putting together our starting lineup we want as many Iron Men as possible!

The Winter Iron Man Award is earned by those Viking football players who choose not to participate in winter sports. They rather commit themselves to a rigorous off-season workout program. The opportunity to earn this award begins one week after our last game and ends in April. Winter Iron Men complete 68 workouts facilitated by and documented by coaches. It is a testament to the hard work and determination of a player. Winter Iron Man Award Winners wear a white version of the Iron Man Shirt to symbolize the snow and ice that they must endure throughout winter workouts.

We put our offensive quick huddle cadence on the back to stress the sense of urgency we like to play the game and work out with. "READYGO!"

Iron Men also get their names put on plaques placed on the VSHS weight room wall to be honored for years to come.

2 and 3 x Iron Man recipients wear the Iron Man Award shirt with V chevrons (V for Victory and Vinton) on the right sleeve and cross viking swords on the left sleeve, a VS emblem is also added.

Annual Iron Man Award winners are added to a plaque and posted in our weight room.

BE AN IRON MAN!
FEBRUARY VSFB OFFSEASON TRAINING MEMBER OF THE MONTH AWARD
(One VSFB Off-Season Member will be selected as member of the month. This hard worker will recieve special VSFB gear and other prizes for their hard work at bettering themselves and the FB program. This award is open to athletes who are in Wrestling, Swiming, or BB and takes their obligations to those sports under consideration as well)

NOVEMBER VSFB OFFSEASON MEMBER OF THE MONTH AWARD GOES TO: NATE WIEBOLD

REASON: Nate worked very hard during the month of February. He has also been a somewhat regular since November. It's obvious to see the gains that Nate has made as he seems to be building more and more quality muscle. Every time I see him his arms and chest appear a liitle bigger. He's going to be much more powerful and quicker then he has been in previous seasons. I expect him to be a top contender for a starting spot this football season. Nate has also done a good job as a mentor reaching out to freshman in the weightroom to show them the ropes.
2010 1st Team All-District OT Troy Hallberg Receives Full Scholarship to Iowa Wesleyan College!!

Troy has received scholarships for both academics and sports. He also plans to play in the band at Iowa Wesleyan. At Vinton-Shellsburg, he has also been involved in the choir and the DanSing Corps show choir. Troy plans on majoring in athletic training and continuing on to Palmer College of Chiropractic.

-Speak with Coaches Farley, Chvala, and May. We all have open door policies. We will provide you with materials and instruction as to your positions and other learning needs.
-Speak with last years seniors, they will help you.
-Watch football! study the game.
-Read football books. There are a lot of great ones out there.
-Play Madden and NCAA football! That's right play these games! But do it in moderation, and use slow motion to study schemes and assignments on certain plays. Try to emulate formations and plays that are close to what we do here at V-S. (i.e. 4-3 Over & Under, and 3-4 Over and Under are essentially 50 Shade Defenses. Power I, Goaline I, Iso, Blast, Play-Action Passes, Counters, FB Wedge/Dive, Power Off-Tackle, etc.) Most of all try to learn something new after every Madden or NCAA game.

HERE WE GO!!!!!! A LOOK AT THIS YEAR'S DISTRICT! LET'S GO VIKINGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IOWA PREPS 2010 Analysis
2010 Class 3A, District 5 Preview
Luke Feddersen, IowaPreps.com Editor

Wes Burnside of Union will be the top rusher returning in the district. He has the talent to go to the house every time he touches the football. Dewitt and Marion have some key seniors to replace but they are traditionally solid.

Anamosa (0-9 in 2009)

When looking at the struggles of Anamosa, it is pretty obvious that their winless season was caused by their defensive struggles week after week. This club on average gave up nearly 50 points per game and couldn't hold any of their nine opponents under 37 points. That just won't cut it, especially against this stacked district.

With all six of their All District athletes graduated, will that help or hurt the Blue Raiders? The option for playing time among their younger athletes could motivate them to work harder. And while that is good, the team must see returning athletes like Vaughn Takes, Gavin Eilers, Cory Moats, and a host of others step up. Taking care of the ball is also important as well.

Center Point-Urbana (6-4 in 2009/Class 2A)

After making the postseason last fall and winning six games along the way, Center Point-Urbana will be adjusting to a move up to the Class 3A level. A growth in population over the last few years has pushed this club to compete against larger schools. How quickly they adjust to the competition will have a lot to do overall with how successful the team will be in 2010.

Thirteen starters are back for at least one more year but the defense is what the Stormin' Pointers will be relying on early in the season. After giving up 18 points a game last fall, eight return and are hungry to improve on those numbers. There will be some holes to address along the offensive line and getting their younger athletes experience will be crucial. But this group has always found a way to be successful on the gridiron and they are hoping for that to continue despite the move up in classes.

Dewitt (5-4 in 2009)

In the three games where Dewitt needed their offense the most, they struggled and ended up losing each of those contests. Those defeats against Benton, Maquoketa, and Vinton-Shellsburg are what cost this club a chance to go to the postseason. And although the Sabers did have success, being snubbed in the expanded postseason put a damper on their entire season.

Offensively, the team said goodbye to many of their top skill players as well as their offensive line. These holes will be tough to fill but a number of athletes have been working hard over the off-season that will be pushing for time. These open spots should spark competition to see the field and help the team improve in the preseason.

On D, Dewitt has a solid core of returners to build around that include Dillon Connell, Dustin Petersen, and Brandon Jasper. While these players are talented, they must cut down the amount of points that they allow. 25 a game is just too much for a club that wants to get in the race for the district title.

Western Dubuque (2-7 in 2009)

The sheer number of players that Western Dubuque lost to graduation before the 2009 definitely was a big reason why this club only won two games last fall. They were forced to thrust a number of inexperienced athletes into bigger roles and it cost them. But while they struggled, this could actually pay dividends this time around.

The Bobcats have a number of athletes returning with experience and they are hopeful that these players have what it takes to help make a push back towards the postseason. Nick Lenstra, Matt Kass, Zach Schwartz, Mike Kluesner, Zach Schwartz, and Jacob Wernimont will be among their top guns. Kass and Lenstra put up huge numbers through the air and will likely do the same heading into this year. Look for the passing game really to take off.

Maquoketa (7-3 in 2009)

It was a strange season for Maquoketa. Over their first seven games, this team dominated while starting the year undefeated. But a narrow loss to Marion for the district title in week eight sent the team in a tailspin. Over the last two weeks of the year, they lost both games while being outscored 64-0. That was not exactly how their senior class wanted to go out.

For the six starters that the Cardinals have back in 2010, that finish that something has kept them focused. The good news for the club is that there are a lot of talented juniors ready to make a varsity impact. With playing time readily available, these athletes will have a large say in how the team does overall. With some solid speed, if Maquoketa can adjust to varsity football by the time district kick off, the could be a darkhorse by the end of the fall.

Marion (10-1 in 2009)

It doesn't seem to matter the year as Marion always has the talent and work ethic needed to compete for district titles. That was the case last fall as this club did an excellent job coming together and winning a district title. Both sides of the ball had success for the Indians and propelled the team to a ten win season. Their final loss to Decorah was tough to swallow but it gives the returning players something to build on in 2010.

Eight total starters are back for the fall so reloading this fall will be based on younger athletes. These players must be ready to step in and fill some big shoes left by the graduated seniors. The biggest question mark will be along the lines. The team has players with the potential to excel but they must show that they are ready before district play kicks off.

Logan Pickering is gone but that should allow Colton Storla to see more carries. This talented junior rushed for over 500 yards as a sophomore and will be a thorn in the side of opponents over the next two seasons. Their defense should be salty after giving up only 11 points per game last fall.

Union, LaPorte City (8-3 in 2009)

Union was a very tough team to figure out last fall. On one side, this club dominated Maquoketa and nearly beat an eventual semifinalist in New Hampton in the postseason. But they also lost to Dewitt, was blown out by Marion, and nearly lost to Vinton. So was their eight win season due to their schedule or where they better than people give them credit for?

While that question is nearly impossible to answer now, the returning players are hoping that they have enough firepower to continue proving doubters wrong. The Knights said goodbye to basically their entire passing game so there are question marks to answer. But that have the luxury of returning an All State type rusher in Wes Burnside. This talented junior totaled nearly 1,400 yards on the ground and will be more of a focal point of the offense. With inexperience around him early on, he Burnside will need to carry Union during their first few games.

Vinton-Shellsburg (4-6 in 2009)

Sitting at 1-5, the Vinton players could have easily mailed in the rest of the season and had more fun off the field. But instead, this group stayed locked in and continued buying in on what the coaches were preaching. That focus paid off as this team strung three straight wins together (including two over Benton and Dewitt) before falling to New Hampton in the playoffs. The fact that they were able to get to the postseason after their start says a lot about their entire team.

Logan Williams, Gunner Tranel, and Travis Libbert are all hoping that they learned to not dig themselves into too deep of a hole early on. Yes, they found their way out of it but getting back to the postseason in this district may prove even tougher. The Vikings will need their younger players to step up in order to add depth. If they do that, fighting for the postseason could easily happen once again this fall.

Quotes from athletes on their team:
"I think we'll do pretty good because we got a pretty fast team. We might be the biggest on the field but we will be the fastest."
Joe Carber, Dewitt

"I think it is going to be a really fun season. There are a lot of underclassmen that will need to step up. We don't have a lot of seniors so going in; it is going to be a mystery. It should really be fun seeing how it plays out. We'll need those juniors and sophomores to step up."
Tyler Fisher, Marion

Quotes from athletes on the toughest team in district play:
"There were quite a few good teams in the district but I'm not sure."
Joe Carber, Dewitt

"I'll be honest; we have a solid district. Dewitt is always tough and our game against Maquoketa was close last year. I am hearing that Center Point-Urbana has one of their best classes going through. There are not many slouches in the conference. Every game will be taken seriously."
Tyler Fisher, Marion

Quotes from toughest individual opponent in their district:
"There are a few good players out there but I'm not totally sure."
Joe Carber, Dewitt

"Zach Twedt from Benton is always tough. That is about it that I know to be honest."
Tyler Fisher, Marion

Sleeper Team: Maquoketa
It depends heavily on their junior class but Maquoketa could easily get into the playoffs.

Biggest District Question Mark?
Will anyone in this district have the firepower to take down Marion?

Preseason Conference MVP: Wes Burnside, Union
Burnside won't have his passing game to take the pressure off of him but expect a monster junior season.

Preseason Conference Champion: Marion
The Indians have been extremely consistent over the last few seasons and return enough talent to add a district title to the resume.

GO VIKINGS!

Coach Farley
VSFB Continues Summer Workouts & Practice!! ENTER JULY!!!
The boys continue to work hard as we close June and enter July. We're still seeing great numbers as our Kettlebell, Weight, and SAQ workouts continually yield 20-30 participants. HOWEVER, WE STILL NEED MORE PARTICIPANTS! Especially those varsity players who plan on competing for playing time this season.

IF YOU DON'T WORK HARD, TRANSFORM, AND EVOLVE INTO THE KIND OF FOOTBALL PLAYER YOU'RE CAPABLE OF BEING, SOON YOU WILL BE BEAT OUT AND DEFEATED ON THE FIELD BY THOSE THAT DO!

JULY IS CRUCIAL FOR US! EVERYONE DO EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO GET EVERY VIKING FB PLAYER IN THE WEIGHTROOM!!!! IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO START!!!

Between Kettlebells, Weight workouts, Sled Pulls, and our SAQ sessions we're covering all fronts of football fitness. A special thanks to Mark Erickson for a great start to the VSFB Kettlebell program! We're so fortunate to have his services as part of our arsenal. Several of our Captains and Squad Leaders have really stepped up and lead by example. Their leadership is truly demonstrating a commitment and a direction toward success! Keep it up! Those who have not quite gotten off the blocks yet, the time is NOW!

THE MORE YOU SWEAT NOW, THE LESS PAIN YOU'LL FEEL IN AUGUST !!!!

We NEED better attendance at our practices from 8:45-10:30. Nonetheless those who do make it to these practices will be all the more ahead of the others come August. Everforward!

THANKS FOR EVERYTHING MEN! KEEP IT UP!

COACH FARLEY

***Assignment for 5/19 Wednesday:
Introspect yourself as a person and create YOUR VISION.

Today Decide What You Want From This Team As Well As Yourself.

-You as leader. What kind of leader will you be?

-Your Commitment and how will you influence others to commit?

-What do you want our team to look like? How do you want us to play?

-How will you inspire and motivate others?

-How hard are you willing to work? How will you get others to work this hard?

-What are your personal goals? What are your team goals? How will you ensure that the team goals always come first?

-Work on these questions, they will create your vision. By July you should have a vision for yourself and the team.

***NOTE Leadership meeting for Monday 5/31 has been change to Tuesday 6/1.

It was great to see all leaders in attendance last session! I know many of you are busy with State Track, baseball, etc. But you all made it happen. That shows commitment to our team, the leadership corps, and yourself!

-Remember to work on the second reading questions from our session and work on your goals/vision statement.

-Remember preparation is key to successful leadership. Insist upon this from yourself!

May you continue to inspire and lead the way!!

2010 VSFB Spring Letter From Coach Farley
Friday, April 30, 2010

Vinton-Shellsburg Viking Football Players,

The football season is upon us, and it’s that time of year again to meet and discuss our plans for next year. We have a lot of rebuilding to do and we need to ensure that all of us are working toward that end. Many of you have been out for winter sports and are currently out for spring sports. Several of you have also committed to weight room and SAQ workouts as you work to improve yourself as a football player. A few of you today will be recognized and receive your winter Iron-Man awards for achieving 57 + lifts! We want all of you to work toward the accomplishment of 39 lifts/SAQ’s and stand before the crowd at the lift-a-thon to receive the Iron-Man award in August! You will be required to attend any combination of 3 lifts/KB workouts and 1 SAQ per week. Taking a week or so off of working out for vacations in June or July is fine and greatly encouraged! However, please keep in mind that if you fail to average these 4 workouts (3 KB/Viking Football Weight Session and 1 SAQ) certain privileges will be withdrawn from you i.e. (A NFL combine type shirt will be worn during pregame for all of those that meet the basic workout requirement, if you are a sophomore, you will not be eligible for Varsity promotion if you do not meet the requirement, etc.) These days, it seems like the school year is starting earlier and earlier, therefore so must football. August is full for us this year! Our season officially begins August 2nd with Captains practice for 10-12 grades. 9th grade attendance is optional but strongly encouraged.

In order to achieve in football, you must be eligible to play the game. As a team, every effort must be made to follow the school and state policy concerning athletic eligibility. Academics, tobacco, drugs & alcohol, legal matters. Make sure you’re doing the right thing all of the time. Do not put yourself in a position where you’re jeopardizing yourself, your team, your family, your coaches, or your school. Take every measure to stay safe and ensure that you’re staying out of trouble.

Varsity: Last year was a good start, 4-5 in the regular season with a Sub-State loss. We return 3 All-District players and several others who we have giant expectations for. Both the offensive and defensive lines and the FB positions are wide open. We also need players to step up and replace key losses in the defensive backfield. We want to build on last year success and improve!

Leadership: We will have Captains and Squad Leaders that will set goals and lead us toward their accomplishment. In mid May you will be assigned to a squad. This squad is a unit that will work and communicate together to ensure that all members are lifting, made aware of team activities, etc. Each squad will have a Squad Leader. Your Squad Leader will have all the basic information as to team events, etc. You should receive texts and other communications from your Squad Leaders through out the summer. Note, that your Squad Leaders and Captains have the full backing of the coaching staff. So long as they are doing what’s best for their team they represent the will of the coaches and need to be respected as such. Captains will oversee these squads; they will also arrange a team outing in June and July for the entire varsity football team. Make sure you have the phone #’s of your Captains and your Squad Leader should you have any questions. Also check our VSFB website for constant updates. It’s never OK to say “I didn’t know” or “No one told me” these are now excuses that will not be accepted. It’s your job to find out.

Vinton-Shellsburg Football Leadership & Integrity Seminar: Starting in May, we will be beginning the first Vinton-Shellsburg Football Leadership & Integrity Seminar. This Seminar, which will show up as an honor on your official school transcript, is designed to influence, inspire, and teach leadership to those who want to develop leadership skills. Leadership skills that will not only enable you to become a great leader in football, but also throughout the course of your life. It will be taught by myself and assisted by the other VSFB coaches. Several well-known high school football coaches will be brought in as guest speakers in September and October. To qualify for this honor, you must be a Captain or a Squad Leader. Sophomore coaches will select 2-3 sophomores to attend the seminar and act as sophomore leadership. Anyone who has earned an Iron Man award may also attend at coach’s discretion. There will be 3 sessions a month May-October. Usually from 6:30-7:45. Breakfast will be provided.

Let’s work hard and win this fall! Ever Forward!

Sincerely,

Coach Farley
Viking Football Players Begin Pull-Sled Work!
Several VS Football players have begun using our new pull sleds with harnesses purchased last month by the program. Until we officially begin our summer off season workouts on June 7, we will have these sled workouts Tuesday and Thursday down on the FB practice field near the baseball field immediatly after weights.

Ask Mike Hustead, Logan Merchant, Chris Merchant, Austin Johnson, Brody Kerner, or Dean Utoff about these workouts! They have all been doing it for a month now and are reaping the benefits!
