2009 season preview
March 6, 2009
The Wolves entered the 2008 season with hopes to build around a strong foundation of young players. The season proved to be another year of growing pains. Looking forward to the summer of 2009, the Wolves will add some new talent to go along with that core of now seasoned veterans. The team will look to rebound from their 4-14 record and provide a bit more entertainment for their home fans who continue to fill the ballpark every weekend.
Leading the Wolves offensively will be veterans Paul Pehler, Matt Losinski and Nolan Johnson. Pehler’s .379 batting average was good for 10th in the league. He led the league in stolen bases (10), tied for the lead in doubles (7) and was fourth in RBI’s (18) – earning him All-CRBL honors as an outfielder. Johnson (.341 BA, 4 2B, 8 R) proves to be an offensive weapon in the line-up. Losinski’s steady bat is overshadowed by his ability to track fly balls with his blinding speed.
The pitching staff is led by Johnson (34 IP) whose 37 strikeouts were good for fifth in the league. Joining him will be returners Jordan Skarr (26 IP, 19 K’s) and Scott Hovell (19 IP, 28 K’s). Newcomer David Kulig should provide a quality arm to what looks to be a solid pitching staff.
New additions to the team include speedy outfielders Steve Mack and Jared Pehler, power-hitting infielder Jesse Schultz and catcher Max Ferguson. With the infusion of this new talent, the Wolves have reason to look forward to 2009 with optimism.
Let’s hope the all-CRBL honorable mention scorekeeper Paul Beck and other Whitehall Wolves’ faithful come out to support the team for another summer of quality baseball.
