Losing in the Dark
May 14, 2012
In what is quickly being hailed as one of the most exciting RVL games in history, Willingboro was upended by the Burlington Mets in the 2012 Season Opener as the light turned to blackness at the legendary Field of Spleens. Boro led 6-4 with 2 outs in the home sixth when a pinch-hit homerun, bunt single, and walk-off home run sent them packing. Mike Loffredo took the loss in relief. The newly nuptialed, Jon Wetzel hit a home run while Matt ?Mongo? Moceri continued to wow the Boro fans with his long balls. Not long balls as in testicles, but long balls as in home runs.
Inside the Game The aging, ever-expanding, out of shape, Jamie Schwantes started behind the dish on Opening Day for the first time in? maybe ever, we have to research that one. Injuries to veterans Mike Gulli and Brett McLaughlin (who is on the disabled list) forced manager Mike Stumpf?s hand. Although some young catchers are on the roster, Stumpy is counting on Schwantes? veteran leadership to handle the young horses on the Boro pitching staff? Rookie Tyler Bayley started on the bump and was impressive in his RVL debut. The only complaint of his outing was that he had too many pitches, forcing Schwantes to count higher than 3? Mets manager, Keith Babula, the self-proclaimed smartest man in the RVL (although he is really the second) made a bold prediction during the game, forecasting the Burlington-Willingboro rivalry to come to a finale in the 2012 RVL Championship series. Boro President/CEO, Steve Kolwicz, who is actually the smartest man in the RVL, stated that he would give Babula the title if his prediction holds.
