Western falls short of Hornets in non-conference game
The Broncos could not muster enough run support to overcome a couple of costly errors late. Steve Roessel was effective all day, and Evin Casey through well in relief. Zach Root re-established himself in the rotation to close the game.
Western wins Northwood series
Game 1: The long day began with Western rallying for the game winning run in the first frame of extras. Dan Murphy and Andrew Ferris split the pitching work, while lead off man Jordan Fershtman and shortstop Modesto Martinez each supplied multi-hit performances.
Game 2: Ryan Feist was lights out and combined with Evin Casey to surrender only three hits. Kyle Shawhan led the Bronco attack reaching base all 5 plate appearances.
Game 3: Western could only muster as many runs as it did errors, in an affair where Northwood plated the game winner in the bottom of the seventh. Kyle Shawhan again had three hits, in a game where the costly mistakes led to Northwood runs.
Western/Northwood series moved
The upcoming series against Northwood has been moved from Midland to Bailey Park in Battle Creek (Morrison Field) due to Northwood being unable to secure a home field. Because of this move on short notice, there will be 3-7 inning games played on Sunday starting at 10:00 am
Western Takes 2 of 3 from Central Michigan
Western Michigan started the conference season off strong last weekend by taking 2 of 3 from Central Michigan.
In Game 1, CMU pitcher Zane Breslin shut down the Bronco offense, holding them to just 1 run on 4 hits as Western fell 6-1 to the Chips. Josh Pilarski recorded 2 hits, and Andrew Ferris threw two scoreless innings in relief.
Western evened out the series in Game 2 as they put up 9 runs on 8 hits during a 9-5 win over Central. Ryan Feist picked up a complete game win, holding CMU to 4 earned runs on 5 hits. Bryce Jones had 2 hits and scored 2 runs, and Modesto Martinez added 2 hits and 1 stolen base.
Western took the series win in dramatic fashion on Sunday morning. On a day when the ball seemed to bounce Central's way on every play, WMU pulled out a 5-4 walkoff win. Brendan Cleary dominated in his first start of the season, allowing just 1 earned run over 6 innings while recording 9 strikeouts. Chad Carpenter earned the win in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Entering the bottom of the 8th in a 4-1 hole, Jordan Fershtman and Shin Aono led off the inning with solid hits and each scored before the inning ended. In the bottom of the 9th, Gus Remillet started the inning with a fly ball to the left field fence, and advanced to third on a bunt single by Trent Zwiers. Jose Vasquez tied the game with a double to the right-centerfield gap, and Curtis Fisher ended the game with a walk-off sacrifice fly to right, scoring Zwiers from third.
Western Michigan (6-5, 2-1) looks to build on the momentum of the series win against Northwood University (0-0, 0-0) this coming weekend.

The Western Michigan University Club Baseball team participates in the National Club Baseball Association's (NCBA) Division I Great Lakes Conference - North Division (Michigan, Michigan State, Central Michigan, Northwood, Western Michigan, and Ferris State). Our schedule consists of a couple of games/tournaments in the fall. Our spring schedule begins in March down in warm and sunny Florida. We come back up north and play 5-3 game weekend series against our conference opponents and also will play several games during the week against local community colleges and JV teams.
Last season, the club baseball team finished 10-14 overall and 8-7 in our league, which was good for 4th place. Some highlights of season included beating the preseason #1 D2 club baseball team Northeastern University 24-7. WMU also beat the University of Michigan, who won the conference championship and a World Series qualifier two out of three games in league play. We also beat Michigan State for the first time in many years. WMU finished the conference season above .500 thanks to a sweep of Ferris State to end the season.

Pitcher Dan Murphy cruised through the Great Lakes North Conference going a perfect 5-0, which only landed him a spot on the All-Region Third Team. Congratulations gentlemen, keep up the good work.
