Derry settles in at WVU-P

November 21, 2012

Kerry Patrick - Sports Writer ( , Parkersburg News and Sentinel

Recruiting is a passion of Josh Derry.

Now the former Ohio Valley University assistant men's basketball coach is taking that extension of the game and making it part of his focus as he tries to build a program at West Virginia University-Parkersburg.

"It's not always about the X's and the O's in this business -it's also about the Jimmy's and the Joe's," Derry said. "You need players who can make plays. At the end of the day, if you don't have the players it can make it tough."

Derry is a 2007 graduate of John Glenn High School (Ohio) who worked as a student assistant for the men's basketball program at Marietta College. That's where he made the connection with Marietta College assistant Mike Snell, who eventually took over the head coaching duties at OVU.

When Snell made the move five years ago to OVU, Derry soon followed.

"That was a tremendous opportunity just to see the ins and outs at that level," Derry said.

Derry's background in terms of head coaching ranges from the eighth grade level to high school level with AAU. In addition to hitting the recruiting trail at OVU, Derry also finished with an 18-3 record as the Fighting Scots' junior varsity coach.

When the opportunity at WVU-P came knocking at his door this past summer, he made sure he was on the same page with the school's director of student union and activities Tom Yencha and vice-president of student services Anthony Underwood.

"They were looking for someone who could help this program turn the corner and advance a little more," Derry said. "The hardest part for me was leaving the players I helped recruit."

Monday on their home court, the Riverhawks improved to 2-3 after defeating Kentucky Christian University, 86-63, in their final game before the Thanksgiving break.

WVU-P counts on Chicago product Darius Jenkins to shoulder the scoring responsibilities, while Josh Jones (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Jeremy Roberts (Chicago) have been tagged as team captains.

"Josh is our point guard, and he's our quarterback on the floor," Derry said. "Jeremy is our vocal leader. He is not afraid to tell someone if they need to improve. He is an extension of the coaching staff."

Roster holdovers from last season include Parkersburg South's Garrett Foggin, St. Marys' Cameron Lancaster, Keith Penn from Washington, D.C. and Jason Terrell from Huntington, WV. Local players also making a contribution are St. Marys' K.D. Arnett and Belpre's Micah Pfalzgraf.

"I'm really trying to take in local players because I want them to feel this is a place they can go to work toward their goals," Derry said.

A week from that day, the Riverhawks will be on the road at Salem International University - that game is scheduled to tip off on Tuesday, November 13 at 7:00pm. Riverhawks Sign Six, More to Come in Spring

September 26, 2012

(PARKERSBURG, West Virginia) -
The 2012-13 version of the WVUP Riverhawks men's basketball landscape will look a lot different to the fans this coming season. In just one month (Oct. 26) the Riverhawks will entertain Washington State Community College with a tip time set at 7:00pm.

"I am very excited about the group that I was able to bring in over just the short two weeks that I had before the start of classes for the fall semester. I feel that we have a great opportunity to place a quality group on the floor that this school and surrounding community can be proud of. The guys are working very hard toward learning the system and making sure that they are well conditioned for the long season that is before us."

"We want to be Parkersburg's team ... we hope that the community will support what we are doing here. On another note, we really want local student-athletes to give WVU-P a serious look. When you combine the solid academic tradition that the school offers as well as the ability to play a sport or join other student groups, it turns out to be a great opportunity for studentes in this area."

2012 Recruits

KD Arnett - 6'1" SG - St. Mary's, WV

"KD is a sharpshooter that comes to us from St. Mary's High School. He is a very solid player that will play a key role in just his freshman year. He will stretch the floor for us - he is a player that no opposing team will want to leave unguarded. This will allow us to have good spacing and a good bit of room for our players to operate going to the rim."

Darrius Jenkins - 6'3" CG - Chicago, IL.

"Darrius is a solid all around young man and basketball player. He has a solid frame, good strength, and a great deal of athletic ability. He can put it on the floor and get to the rim - finishing strong above the rim, and he can also shoot it from the perimeter as well. On the defensive side of the basketball, he is very solid - his ability to create turnovers on the ball and to play the passing lanes well will fuel our transition game."

Josh Jones - 5'11 PG - West Palm Beach, FL.

"Josh brings with him the knowledge of effectively operating at the point guard position. He has a pass-first mentality on the offensive side of the ball, while also being able to knock down the open jumper. His tenacity on the defensive end will play a big part in our ability to force turnovers that will lead us into our transition break. Overall, his athleticism and quickness will prove to be very valuable to our team this season."

Micah Pfalzgraf - 6'9" F/C - Belpre, OH.

"Micah is going to make an immediate impact as a post player with the ability to score in a lot of ways as an inside-out type of player. He reminds me of a European style big man with his versatility, ability to handle the basketball, and his ability to shoot the ball. He will make a huge difference for us this year - he played at a high level during his time at Belpre High School and Mountain State Academy. His size and ability will give us another very solid option on the court this season."

Jeremy Roberts - 6'3" SF - Chicago, IL.

"Jeremy is a solid player. He brings great athletic ability and strength to the table. He is tough to stop down low with his equally shifty and strong moves and he can shoot it from the perimeter as well. He has played in high quality programs throughout his career, and we are glad that he is with us at this time as we look to build a quality program here at WVU-P. He will play a key role for us on both ends of the floor this winter."

Jason Terrell - 6'4" PF - Huntington, WV.

"Jason is going to be able to contribute right away on the defensive side of the floor through his abilities to rebound and block shots effectively. He is working hard and progressing nicely on the offensive side with his shooting out to about fifteen feet."

These six will combine with the returners from a season ago to form the Riverhawks squad for 2012-2013. Returners include Garett Foggin, Camaron Lancaster, and Keith Penn.

August 7, 2012

(PARKERSBURG, West Virginia)

The ultra-talented St. Mary's high school product, KD Arnett, has signed on to play basketball for newly hired Riverhawks Head Coach Josh Derry. Arnett is no stranger to the hard work and commitment that is expected as he is coming from a successful high school program under St. Mary's head man, Coach Barnhart.

"We are very excited to have KD committed to play for us here at WVU-P", Derry stated, "He is a solid player that will be asked to contribute a good bit for us right away, and I think that both he and our staff are excited about the opportunities that lie ahead."

The Riverhawks will open the 2012-2013 season of play against the Red Storm of the University of Rio Grande (OH) on October 28. Their first home game will be against Washington State CC on November 10.
