Wilmington Now Co-ed!
Wilmington University's 2008-2009 cheerleading squad brings 4 gentlemen and 5 ladies to our first Small Co-ed Division II program. Talent is running high this season with new recruits joining our 7 returning members of the 2007-2008 team. This makes our program an exciting contender for the 2009 UCA College National Championships held in Orlando, Florida in January. Graduate students Greg Gilbert and Amanda Cassarino, who captured the 2007 UCA National Partner Stunt Championship, bring a level of experience never seen before at the University. Transfer students Brad Gilbert, Ashley Unruh, Kerri Campbell, and Tejay Gilliam bring tremendous tumbling and stunting abilities. Freshman Nelly Markow, Brittany Cote, and Brandon Webster are fantastic and knowledgeable cheerleaders who will be assets to our program for many years to come. Returning members Randi Barilla, Candace Ewald, Jen Norvell, Mary Alexander, Jade Holzinger, Ashley Manus, and Leslie Caldwell lay the foundation for our program with their commitment, leadership, and invaluable experience. The team will be headed to Boston University for NCA college camp from August 6th-8th. They will compete with the best teams in the northeast for a paid bid to the NCA College National Championships in Daytona Beach, Florida. WILMINGTON UNIVERSITY NAMES JEFFREY MARTINO NEW CHEERLEADING COACH
NEW CASTLE, DE -- Wilmington College Director of Student Affairs, Tina Scott, is pleased to announce the hiring of Jeffrey Martino as head cheerleading coach.
A graduate of the University of Delaware, where he was a four year member and two-time captain of the Fightin’ Blue Hens cheer squad, Martino was previously an assistant coach at Delaware. There, he helped with recruiting, fundraising, fitness, and exhibitions, along with managing team practices and performances.
Currently the President-Elect of the Delaware Cheerleading Coaches Association, Martino is also the owner and president of Tri-State CheerNastics, Incorporated. He has orchestrated various competitions throughout the state of Delaware, including the State Championship, and also coordinated camps and clinics for local cheerleading programs.
Martino replaces Tina Scott, who resigned in late April after six years as head coach. Coach Martino inherits a squad that is a year removed from winning the 2006 Reach the Beach National Championships and Delaware All-Girl College Division State Championship.
"We are very happy to have Jeff join the coaching staff and athletic department here at Wilmington," Scott said. "He comes to us with a very impressive background. I feel confident that the cheerleading program will continue to grow and be one of the most respected squads in the region. The student-athletes will learn a great deal from him and his knowledge of the sport, and they all should enjoy the opportunity to work with him."
