Frequently Asked Questions

Can I coach or play and still do some refereeing?

Yes, the referee coordinator will help you schedule around your personal schedule. Most of our referees also coach or play.

What does the class cost?
It will cost participants nothing. The league pays for the class and all materials. The league also pays the registration fee for the first year and for one half of the referee uniform and equipment. The total cost to the league depends upon how many people there are in the class, but it is usually about $2500.00 to $3500.00. The local referee instructors donate their time. Otherwise it would cost the league about $300.00 more.

Are there any other costs?

Referees are expected to pay for one half of their uniform and equipment. This has been $25.00 for the last several years. This amount can be paid at the beginning of the year or worked off by refereeing games. The only other cost would be if someone took the class, got registered and then never did any refereeing. They would be expected to pay for their entire uniform, their equipment, their registration, and their materials. That total would be about $85.00.

Do referees get paid?

Yes. There is a pay based on the age of the players in the game you are reffing, if you are doing a line or a center, and your experience. The final pay scale approved by the Board of Directors will be available at the class.

How old do I have to be to become a referee?

At least 14 (unless taking the course with an adult). We have a policy that a referee must be at least 2 years older than the players in the game he or she is doing.

I was a referee last year and want to ref again this year, what do I do?

Please be sure to follow the instructions that come with the form to insure that your form is processed correctly and efficientlly. Click here for the updated instructions !

Can I take the class just to become a better coach or player even if I have no intention of refereeing?

Yes! Just let us know that is your intention. We will not license you or order a uniform for you. Those two items cost the league about $50.00. If you let us know that you are taking the class just for information, the league can save that money.
