The game was tight all around but the great efforts put in by Team Rafaqat eventually won them the game 39-37!

Brother Shahjehan was very effective to start as he finished with 100% shooting. Brother Shayaan started of strong as well as he finished the game with a great 16 points. But slowly Team Amanat started to come back as captain Hammad Butter put up some great shots ending the game with an amazing 24 points along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals! Brother Musaver (Team Amanat) and Brother Saib (Team Sadaqat) had a great rivalry down in the post as brother Musaver finished with 16 points, 6 assists (Leads League), 13 rebounds, and 3 steals! Brother Saib finished with 8 points and 14 rebounds! (Leads league). Team Amanat went in to half time with a small lead as brother Noor Ahmad put up 7 points and 2 steals off the bench. Emad Ryan finished with 6 points and 7 rebounds and Brother Muneer put in work as he grabbed 6 rebounds along with a steal. The second half proved to be just as intense as the first. Both team went back and forth. Brother Taha dropped an astonishing 26 points (Leads League) off the Bench! The game went back and forth and brother Shayaan also put up 6 assists (Leads League) and 6 rebounds along with 3 steals! Brother Bilal also had effective momentum off the bench as he filled in as an extra player for team Sadaqat. The game came down to the wire as Team Amanat were only down 1. They got the ball with only 1 second left on the clock as Brother Musaver controlled the rebound and heaved a shot and in the process got a shooting foul. With the game clock expired and Team Amanat down 1, he had to hit 1 free throw to force Overtime and hit both to win the game. Unfortunately for Team Amanat he missed both and Team Sadaqat steal a win in a high scoring game, 56-55!

AOBL: Second Season Game Stats and Highlights!

November 5, 2013 – 01:03 PM

Dear Respected Brothers,

Assalamu-ai-laikum!

By the Grace of Allah, we have completed the second official season game for AOBL last Saturday, November 2, 2013! As per usual, both games provided a thrill with one being a comeback victory in the second half. If you have any suggestions or comments that will help to improve AOBL, please share those with myself and Qaid Sahib and we will make changes to accommodate our fellow brothers.

The statistics and standings can be seen on www.leaguelineup.com/AOBL

To see individual statistics, go to "Standings" on the left hand side and then select "Statistics Leaders" beside "Category" (located above the wins/losses)

The following are game highlights and individual statistics for both games:

Amanat snatches victory from Rafaqat!

Amanat [50] - Rafaqat [43]

The first game between Rafaqat and Amanat was a rematch of the last preseason game held this season. Rafaqat had won the first game and it was up to Amanat to seek out and show they were capable of taking on the defending champions. The early lead came to Rafaqat with some fast points and devastating low-post moves from Qaid Sahib - Awais Mehmood. It seemed as though Rafaqat  had the game under wraps in the first half until fatigue kicked in and Amanat began to slowly pick away at Rafaqat's lead. The strong lineup of Amanat, consisting of - Muneer Khan, Saib Ahmad, and Naeem Chaudhary proved a deadly combination of offensive and defensive prowess. All three players scored 14 points or more and had a well balanced offence with each player packing on 3 or more assists. Tanzeel Qureshi provided much-needed offence for Amanat, going 3/5 and consistently showing he is an offensive threat that cannot be left unguarded. The end of the game was close with Amanat in a close lead while Faizan Khan and Emad "LockdownD" Ryan of Rafaqat continued to remain resilient on the defensive end of the floor and not showing signs of letting their man score. Despite a comeback attempt with some late buckets from Fawad Khan of Rafaqat , the attempt was short-lived when Naeem Chaudhary of Amanat sealed the deal with a pair of baskets down the stretch. Amanat is in the lead [2-0] in the AOBL Conference and maintains their standing as team with the best chemistry in the league. On the other hand, Rafaqat is last in the conference [0-2] and will need to get more players involved in the offence and work on building stamina if they wish to remain a challenger to the remaining teams.

Shujaat wins over Sadaqat and takes convincing victory!

Sadaqat [40] - Shujaat [57]

The matchup between Sadaqat and Shujaat was one to watch with a couple individuals putting on a show. It was a close game at the start but Shujaat slowly built a lead and never looked backed. Both young Khuddam - Raheel "Skyhook" Ahmed of Sadaqat and Taha Ahmad of Shujaat played excellent games scoring 8 points each and both contributed to their team's offence and defence with some crucial assists and rebounds. Sadaqat welcomed brother - Ammar Bhatti - who was from outside the community but joined team Sadaqat to take the place of a few essential players on the team. He provided a much needed offensive boost with 24 points but it was not enough as Sadaqat was really never able to get back into the game. Hasan Khan and Valeed "PostUp" Malik of Sadaqat contributed with 4 points each but were unable to get into any valuable rhythm to help Sadaqat take a leap back into the game. Irfan Cheema of Shujaat had a stellar all-around game with a season high 39 points and showed his well-roundedness with 7 steals, 5 blocks, 6 assists and 16 rebounds - MashAllah! Despite Shakeel "Mamba" Nazir's shooting woes, he provided Shujaat with fearless attacking while Bilal Ahmad also chipped in with a pair of assists for ShujaatShujaat and Sadaqat are both are tied at [1-1] in the AOBL conference and may possibly be a matchup to watch with the increased likelihood of them meeting each other in the first round of the playoffs. Both teams were missing players so it will be interesting to see how these teams fare with their full squad on the court.

AOBL: First Season Game Stats and Highlights!

October 23, 2013 – 12:07 PM

Assalamu-ai-laikum!

By the Grace of Allah, we have completed the first official season game for AOBL last Sunday, October 20, 2013! Both games were exciting with one being an overtime thriller with several game-thrilling moments.

To see individual statistics, go to "Standings" on the left hand side and then select "Statistics Leaders" beside "Category" (located above the wins/losses)

The statistic abbreviations are as follows:

  1. PT = Points
  2. FGM = Field Goals Made (Shots Made)
  3. FGA = Field Goals Attempted (Shots Taken)
  4. FTA = Free Throws Attempted
  5. FTM = Free Throws Made
  6. FT% = Free Throw Percentage
  7. STL = Steals
  8. BLK = Blocks
  9. AST = Assists
  10. OFF = Offensive Rebounds (Not accounted for)
  11. DEF = Defensive Rebounds (all rebounds are DEF)
  12. TOT = Total Rebounds

The following are game highlights and individual statistics for both games:

Sadaqat wins close OT battle with Rafaqat! Sadaqat [57] - Rafaqat [52]

The game between Rafaqat and Sadaqatwas one for the books. Despite the new lineups for both teams since last year's draft, the rematch of the championship finals teams made it an even sweeter victory for Sadaqat. Sadaqat came off with an early lead in the first half, being up by more than 15 points nearing half time. The pick and rolling Sadaqat broke down the Rafaqat defence with ease and were on their way to a steam rolling victory. However, even without their fearless captain - Qaid Sahib (Awais Mehmood), the strong-willed Rafaqat knew their weakness and made immediate changes to strengthen their defence. Rafaqat made their way back into the game with Murabbi Sahib - Imtiaz Ahmed, providing strong determination and strong defence, Faizan Khan playing an all around excellent game with a double double (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Shayaan Chaudhary providing much needed quickness and resilience off the bench. Despite being able to match the strong starting lineup of Sadaqat consisting of Daanish Malik, Valeed Malik and Faizan Sadiq, it was Raheel Ahmed with an outstanding opening rookie game with 14 points of 7/9 shooting. Fawad Khan provided Rafaqat with some game-tying shots in the last minute of the game to force the game into OT but it was a combination of foolish mistakes on Rafaqat's side and Daanish "Sharpshooter" Malik who sealed the deal with flawless free throws down the stretch of OT to win the game for Sadaqat. The potential for both teams is quite vast, however, it will be pleasant to see how Rafaqat plays with Qaid Sahib - Awais Mehmood, Abdul Qudoos Chaudhary, and Emad "LockdownD" Ryan back in the lineup in the near future.

Blowout victory taken by Amanat! Amanat [57]- Shujaat [35]

It was a long season forAmanat last year - it seemed as though their team had the perfect pieces in place for a strong championship run but fell short of their potential in the first playoff game. This year, with some major changes to the team roster under the same captain Muneer KhanAmanat has shown that they are all about winning now. Amanat had taken an early lead in the starting half and never lost their lead in the game. The newly recruited Shahjehan Ahmed provided energy and enthusiasm as a fearless shooter for Amanat and showed signs of excellent defence with 4 steals (current league leader in steals). Unfortunately, with both teams having no subs, it was a battle of fitness and will and Amanat simply showed no signs of weakness. Shujaat needs to look to improve their running game and defence if they wish to contend with teams that have already been established as contenders in AOBL. Captain Shakeel "Mamba" Nazir had an off-night with 6/35 shooting but continued to tirelessly battle for Shujaat till the last minute of the game gathering himself 4 assists, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals. Bilal Ahmad and Ismael Durrani showed signs of being big potential threats in the low-post for Shujaat but will need to continue working with their teammates to find more open opportunities. Faateh "RainingThrees" Malik pitched in with 12 points from long distance while collecting 4 rebounds for his respective Shujaat. Naeem Chaudhary of Amanat showed flashes of brilliance with his excellent all around game of 25 points and 6 rebounds. Captain Muneer Khan continued to show his dominance in this game with an outstanding stat line: 26 points, 25 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 5 assists! His determination was evident on the court where there was no answer to his control over the game. The team chemistry of Amanat has already taken off and it will be scary to watch how good the combination of these players may become in the future. Meanwhile, Shujaat has the key pieces to contend at the championship level; however, it will be up to the captain and players to figure out how to effectively utilize their abilities while developing stamina to run with other teams.

June 27, 2013

Assalamu-ailaikum!

With the conclusion to the 2012-2013 Ahmadiyya Ottawa Basketball League season, we are transitioning towards the new season of AOBL. By the Grace of Allah, we have increased the number of players in our league  with a total of 27 players registered on the 4 teams - Alhumdollilah! The new season will begin shortly after Ramadhan has been completed; hence, it will begin mid-August.

During Ramadhan, there may be pre-season games set-up depending on interest and people's willingness to play through a fast. For those who don't know, NBA legend and hall of famer- Hakeem Olajuwan - played rigorous NBA games while fasting and was known to play even better in these times. If we derive his discipline and motivation, we can also do the same. You can learn more about this at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U30RyR39ptQ

Our brother, Shakeel Nazir, graciously created an AOBL video for everyone to see. For those who were unable to attend the ceremony, or would like to see the new video, visit our YouTube page (Please like and subscribe the channel!):

AOBL Update and Power Rankings!

May 5, 2013 – 03:07 PM

Assalamu-ai-laikum,

By the Grace of Allah the Ahmadiyya Ottawa Basketball League (AOBL) has been steamrolling since its initiation several months ago. Many khuddam have taken interest in the league's competitiveness and have been striving to reach the top spot in the conference. With one season game remaining until the playoffs, it seems as though the championship is anyone's game.

The following are the power rankings as of today and does not include the season finale and playoffs:

AOBL SEASON POWER RANKINGS

1. Sadaqat [5-3]: Team Sadaqat was looking strong at the start of the season with a 5-1 start but dropped two straight games in the month of April. Captain Musaver Ahmed had strong back to back performances with over 30 pts per game but was not able to keep his pace resulting in back to back losses. His performance has been strong but will need a better performance in the season finale and playoffs to secure the top spot in the league. Abdul Qudoos Chaudhry has shown consistent play since the start of season leading the team in assists and chipping in to fill the gaps of the team. His performance has been vital and will be tested in the playoffs.

2. Amanat [4-4]: Team Amanat has been on a offensive surge as of late, finishing the last two months with a strong 2-1 record. They started the season without a victory but managed to mesh a system that has moulded into a spectacle to watch. Captain Muneer Khan has been the core of the team with phenomenal play at both ends of the floor. His efficiency has drastically improved and has rubbed off on his teammates. Daanish Malik has made a case for Most Improved Player, going from a 3rd round draft pick to a high-salary prospect for the future AOBL season. Valeed Malik has also improved his play and along with his teammates, has become an efficient machine. Look for Amanat to make their mark in the season finale and playoffs.

3. Rafaqat [4-4]: Team Rafaqat has been on a steamroll lately going 2-0 in the last two games in the month of April. They had shown high hopes at the start of the season but unfortunately due to injuries and lack of team bonding, they had dropped 3 out 4 games earlier in the season. Team Captain Fawad Khan has revitalized the group and brought Team Rafaqat back into contention. Saib Ahmed has made his case for Defensive Player of the Year with his ability to dominate the boards and take control on the defensive end of the floor. Muhammad Faateh Malik and Bilal Ahmed have been also contributing their share and will be needed for the playoffs in order for Rafaqat to challenge the other squads. Rafaqat can make some noise in the playoffs if they continue to use their strengths and stay healthy for the remainder of the season.

4. Shujaat [3-5]: Team Shujaat has dropped their last 2 games and have lost some of their fire, which they had shown earlier in the season. Team Captain Shakeel "Mamba" Nazir will have to improve his play and once again show his fire to bring this team back into contention. Qaid Sahib - Awais Mehmood, had a monster game against Rafaqat (despite the loss) and must show more consistent play in order for Shujaat to give any of the other teams a challenge. Murabbi Sahib - Imtiaz Ahmed has been consistent with his performance and remains the X-factor for the team. Look out for Shujaat when they are on top of their game.

Season Power Rankings and Recap!

March 3, 2013 – 02:59 PM

Assalamu-ai-aikum!

By the Grace of Allah, our AOBL official season has kicked off and is well underway! InshAllah we will be sending some Ottawa players to represent TeamEastern Canada at the North American Nasir Tournament being held this weekend (March 8-10). Please pray for the team's success in both soccer and basketball and their safe journey - Ameen! You can watch the trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FxTq0Yl--uw

Our fellow khadim, Faateh Malik, has taken the time and effort to make a video of some of the basketball that goes on in the school property, please check it out at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy9VHd4__ik

The following are the Power Rankings for the AOBL season in order of position from 1st to 4th: (based on subjective opinion from the basketball gurus):

(Position) Team Name [Season Record]:

(1) Amanat [2-3]: Team Amanat started off the season 0-3 and has surprised the league with two-straight commanding victories over the top teams in the league. They have begun to show an impeccable standard of teamwork and have forged a chemistry other teams currently lack. In their first game against Team Sadaqat, captain Muneer Khan took the load on his shoulders with 24 points, 4 steals and 13 rebounds. Daanish Malik has had breakthrough performances averaging a stellar 19.0 ppg (points per game) over the last two victories. Valeed Malik has been a consistent and dominant force in the paint, creating space for teammates and playing at a high level. Faizan Khan has continued to glue the team together with his effective defense and will to win in the game of basketball.

(2) Sadaqat [3-2]: Team Sadaqat has been the most consistent team in AOBL. They started the season strong and have remained as one of the dominant teams in the league. Captain Musaver Ahmed has taken the lead for the MVP case as the current scoring and blocks leader in AOBL. He is averaging 31.5 ppg in the last two games despite one of the games resulting in a loss to Team Amanat. Abdul Qudoos Chaudhry has remained as the most consistent player on the team averaging 14.7 ppg and 8.3 rpg (rebounds per game). Luqman "Lucky" Dawood played in the second game and once again came through with crucial points down the stretch against Team Rafaqat.

(3) Shujaat [3-2]: Team Shujaat has had a mediocre season with a 1-1 record in the last two games. Their first game came down to the final seconds while the second game was taken quite easily by Team Amanat. Despite the shooting slump of Captain Shakeel Nazir at 25% in the last two games, he has continued to show his emotional prowess and focus in the game as a young leader by continuing to lead the oldest team in the league. Qaid sahib Awais Mehmood has improved his rebounding the last few games but like the remainder of the team, needs to work on improving field goal percentage. Team Shujaat has shown potential as a tough team in the league, but must distribute the ball and take the right shots to improve their teamwork and offensive efficiency.

(4) Rafaqat [2-3]: Team Rafaqat has been in the slump with an 0-2 record the last two games despite starting the season strong with a 1-2 record. Captain Fawad Khan has continued to show signs of injury with a decrease in performance (despite 20.0 ppg) and will take time to return to full form. Saib Ahmed has continued to wreck havoc in the paint with both offensive and defensive rebounds and has improved scoring over the last few games. Faateh Malik has shown AOBL his long-range shooting but needs to be more involved in the offense in order for Team Rafaqat to make a stand among the other teams. Team Rafaqat has been the most inconsistent team by far but until Fawad Khan is in full form and Bilal Ahmed reunites as a key big man on the team, this team will need to find other ways of scoring the basketball. On a side note, Ehtesham Arif assisted Team Rafaqat in the absence of Fawad to make it a close game with Team Sadaqat with a league high 40 points - MashAllah!

The statistics for the last two games are as follows:
These results do not reflect an individual's statistics if he played on a team other than his own or is not currently part of a team; hence why some of the numbers for score may not add up

Pre-season Power Rankings

February 12, 2013 – 06:04 PM

Assalamu-ailaikum,

Here are the final PRE-SEASON Power Rankings:

Rank #1: Shujaat [2-1]

Although some may be shocked with Team Shujaat in first place on the power rankings, the Commissioner himself was able to witness their superiority on the court against the fan-favourite Team Sadaqat. Captain Shakeel “Mamba” Nazir and his strong well-balanced squad have a tough journey ahead in order to maintain this position as they are currently tied for first in wins/loss with three other teams in the preseason.

Rank #2: Sadaqat [2-1]

Team Sadaqat made a case for first in the power rankings for two weeks straight but fell short with their gruesome loss to Team Shujaat. The absence of  “LuckyMan” Dawood and his ability to turn the tides of the game may have played a role but the defeat made it clear that the race to the championship will not be easy for any team.  Despite their silver medal standing in the Eastern Canada Regional Tournament, their dominance in the Ottawa Conference has not yet been proven.

Rank #3: Rafaqat [2-1]

A strong start does not equate to a strong finish as we have seen with Team Rafaqat. Vacations and injuries have plagued Team Rafaqat, leaving the team as slightly deranged and the unable to build full team chemistry. Captain Fawad Khan is expected to be ready for the start of the season; along with “Sharpshooter” Malik, Rafaqat will regain their desired offensive power.

Rank #4: Amanat [0-3]

If there is one team in the league that can surprise anyone it is Team Amanat. They are currently at the bottom of the Ottawa conference in the preseason but have a chance to redeem their pride with a fresh start with a brand new season. Team Amanat has not won a single game and are at league lows in offense and defense. The potential is present on paper similar to the Lakers, but they will need guidance and hard work in order to make it translate on to the court.

Wassalam,

Fawad

Final Preseason Game Rankings and Statistics

January 14, 2013 – 09:25 PM
Assalamu-ailaikum,

We have come to the end of the preseason of the Ahmadiyya Ottawa Basketball League (AOBL) with every team playing a total of three games - Alhumdollilah! Players have not only been playing but assisting in other areas of the league as well. I would like to thank all the Khuddam and Atfal who have helped to make the preseason a success and for their continuing hard-work in the upcoming regular season- JazakAllah!

The start of the official AOBL season will begin in 2 weeks on Sunday, January 27 starting at 8 am at the school property. The official schedule for the teams will be announced closer to that date and will be available on the website linked below. This coming sunday will be an exhibition basketball match and will allow for players to rest their injuries and give everyone time to prepare for the season. The statistics will be wiped and everything will start fresh in order to give everyone a chance at winning player and team awards.

InshAllah, MVP Rankings and Final Pre-season Power Rankings will be posted on the site and emailed in the next few days - keep posted!

Pre-Season Game Rankings

GAME #1: Rafaqat (W) vs Amanat (L) [48-29]
Team Rafaqat has shown AOBL and the fans what they were built to do from the start - that is to win. Despite having their captain - Fawad Khan, and power forward - Bilal Ahmed, out of the lineup, Team Rafaqat brought home an emphatic victory by demonstrating teamwork as well as lock-down defence by keeping Amanat to only 29 points. Rafaqat welcomed the presence of the missing Faateh "Sharpshooter" Malik who pitched in for a solid 10 point and 7 rebound performance. Keep an eye out for Faateh Malik as the X-factor on this team, this was his first day back and was still able to contribute to the victory in various ways. Behind the replacement player - Ehtsham Arif and his offensive tear with 30 points, Team Rafaqat was able to take the game quite easily. As always, Saib Ahmed continued his rebounding excellence, many of which were offensive rebounds, giving Rafaqat several second chance opportunities. Despite Daanish Malik's best game so far with a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds), Team Amanat continues to struggle. Muneer Khan played a well-rounded game but when the preseason could not end any worse, he went down with an ankle sprain. Team Amanat continues to struggle and the burden is now on the team's shoulder to put in some work during extra practice sessions to improve their offense as they are shooting a league low 32% over the course of the season. It will be interesting to see how Team Amanat faces adversity and if they will be able to bounce back with a healthy captain and rejuvenated game plan in time for the start of the season. UPDATE: At the moment, Team Amanat has not informed the AOBL on the return timetable for Muneer Khan; However, Fawad Khan is scheduled to be back in the starting lineup for Team Rafaqat at the start of the regular season - Alhumdollilah!

GAME #2: Shujaat (W) vs Sadaqat (L) [51-44]
Team Sadaqat looked like a train as an unstoppable force at the start of the season but now more of a train wreck with a crushing loss at the hands of Team Shujaat. They were held to a season and league low 30% in spite of Captain Musaver Ahmed and Abdul Qudoos Chaudhry combining for a total of 38 points, and 26 rebounds. Unfortunately, they were unable to keep up with the youthful Shujaat squad. Although it is yet unknown is the remainder of the missing lineup would have made a difference, Bilal Ahmed came in to assist Team Sadaqat but could not assist the demoralized team from their misfortune. Musaver Ahmed swatted away 7 shots but could not keep the team afloat with missed crucial opportunities late in the game. On the other hand, Captain Shakeel "Mamba" Nazir made an MVP case for himself with a 25 point, 7 rebound and 4 assist morning on 48% shooting. His excitement and resilience transcended his own game and spread like wildfire to the rest of his teammates; he almost gave a reminiscence of Kobe Bryant by willing his way to victory against the previously undefeated Team Sadaqat. It would not be surprising if MVP chants come his way on roadtrips this upcoming season. Without the original starting lineup, replacement player Faizan Sadiq gave his team a double-double performance (12 points, 15 rebounds) and Faraz Faisal continued to improve his game as the X-factor for Team Shujaat; his dominant persona and ability to play at multiple spots on the court will play a key role in Team Shujaat's success.

Second Week of Preseason!

December 23, 2012 – 01:25 PM

Assalamu-ailaikum!

By the Grace of Allah we held the second preseason game of the Ahmadiyya Ottawa Basketball League - Alhumdolillah! The second round of AOBL games were fun, and exciting with players showing their will to win right from the start. Special thanks and jazakAllah to the Khuddam and Atfal who helped with making these games a success by either reffing, score keeping or helping in any other aspects of the games.

Check out www.leaguelineup.com/AOBL and see all the tabs on the left for the updated record of the standings as well as: statistics, league leaders, message board for posting, pictures of the evaluations last week and much more!

ABSENCE ALERT!

Few players had unexcused absences and should understand they have a commitment to their teams by signing a 3-month deal for 0$ but plenty of Sawaab. InshAllah we can all hold true to our word and guide our teams to victory - Ameen!

We will also be posting a video highlight reel of prior to preaseason in the next few days - stay tuned!

GAME #1 - Team Sadaqat (W) vs Team Rafaqat (L)

Team Sadaqat showed consistency and had excellent teamwork which carried them through the game, winning 46-43. With both teams short of players, Ehtsham came in and carried Team Sadaqat with an outstanding 24 points. However, all of team Sadaqat -  including Musaver Ahmed with 12 points on 67% shooting and Luqman "X-Factor" Ahmed with 10 points and 6 crucial rebounds helped to make it all work. The game was very close near half-time but unfortunately Fawad Khan went down with a sprained ankle, leaving his mark with 16 points at over 67% shooting only at half-time. Saib Ahmed continued his rebound onslaught pulling down 22 rebounds and showed resiliency. Team Rafaqat definitely lacked offense with Shakeel Nazir and Faraz Faisal as the replacements for a team that had a well-built team chemistry. It will be interesting to see how Team Rafaqat copes mentally and phsically with having their captain go down with a injury that will keep him out for the next few weeks indefinitely. We will have to wait for Bilal Ahmed and Faateh Malik to return from their vacations while their team is hard at work in order to help pull this team out of the hole.

GAME #2 - Team Shujaat (W) vs Team Amanat (L)

Team Shujaat showed AOBL and the fans that they are definitely capable of scoring and hitting the boards hard with the crushing victory over Team Amanat of 41-31. Team Amanat held their ground until halfway through the second half but stamina and consistency continued to haunt Team Amanat. Despite the absence of Muneer Khan, Valeed Malik and Daanish Malik showed great team chemistry both combining for 20 points and 15 rebounds with several give and go plays. Team Shujaat revealed some secret weapons with Shakeel Nazir putting on a show with 16 points with his trademark Jabbar fadeaway hookshot. However, it was the big weapon on the court that could not be missed - Qaid Sahib, Awais Mehmood - who showed that he is the Shaquille Oneal of this league - simply dominant and unstoppable when focused and willing to take charge. He played like a star with 19 points and 8 rebounds, however, Team Shujaat needs to focus on shot selection as their field goal percentage was quite low at 39%.  An interesting matchup of next week will be Team Shujaat and Team Sadaqat, both teams healthy and hungry for wins.

AOBL - First Games of Preseason!

December 16, 2012 – 07:46 PM

Assalamu-ailaikum!

By the Grace of Allah we held our first preseason game of the Ahmadiyya Ottawa Basketball League - Alhumdolillah! We had two amazing action-packed games with the excitement brewing since Fajr namaz. It is requested that all players make an effort to attend the Fajr prayer at 6:30 am which is the primary purpose of coming to the mosque.

JazakAllah to all the scorekeepers, refs and everyone who helped make the games today successful and kept it friendly.

Check out all the tabs on the left for the updated new look and record of the statistics - including standings, statistics, league leaders, a message board for posting, pictures of the evaluations last week and much more!

GAME #1 - Team Sadaqat (W) vs Team Amanat (L)
Team Sadaqat won with a strong performance by all their players shooting over 40% and keeping Team Amanat to only 24 points with some Bostin Celtic defence. Musaver Ahmed led Team Sadaqat with 16 points while Abdul Qudoos Chaudhry gave a bit of everything with a team-high 5 assists. Luqman Dawood proved to be the X-factor for that team and also showed prowess with a team-high 12 rebounds. Unfortunately, Team Amanat only shot 23% and and were bogged down by the lack of stamina. Highlights of a potent offensive weapon in Muneer Khan were quite visible but they will have to make some adjustments if they want to stay competitive in this league.

GAME #2 - Team Rafaqat (W) vs Team Shujaat (L)
Congratulations to Team Rafaqat with an overall well played all-around team performance with Fawad Khan leading the team in points, assists, and steals. Saib Ahmed showed up as the X-factor with a game high and outstanding 20 rebounds giving Team Rafaqat plenty of shot opportunities despite the poor overall team shooting of 38%. It seems as though they are missing Fateeh Malik''s outside sharp-shooting and will have to make some minor adjustments and create better shot selection in the future. Team Shujaat was feared to be the aggressive and potentially best team and showed glimpses of their true potential despite taking the loss. Even with Qaid sahib''s 11 points, 8 rebound performance, Faraz Faisal''s 57% shooting and Shakeel''s deadly hookshot, Team Shujaat came up short after being out-rebounded 33-19.

A special mention to Ehtsham Arif with a solid 10 point performance giving a boost to Amanat's offensive!

AOBL - Welcome to the Ahmadiyya Ottawa Basketball League

December 5, 2012 – 02:10 PM

Assalamu-ai-laikum,

By the Grace of Allah, we will inshAllah be starting our very own basketball league called, "Ahmadiyya Ottawa Basketball League" or AOBL. With the great amount of enthusiasm shown by Khuddam with up to 20 Khadim participating in basketball every Sunday morning, we will making our own league in order to make this a more organized form of basketball.

ABOUT THE LEAGUE

This league will be 3vs3 basketball with a total of 4 players per team. At the moment, the plan is to have atleast 4 teams with up to 6 teams depending on how many Khuddam show interest and commitment to this league. The duration and timings of the games has not yet been determined but will follow standard NBA rules with fouls, free throws etc. After the evaluation this Sunday, a draft will take place among the captains in order to determine the rosters.

FUNDRAISING AND GAMES ROOM

This is a khuddam-driven initiative and can only continue with the help of our very own financial sacrifices. We would love to have our very own t-shirts with our own names on the back but we would require khuddam to help make this happen. Alhumdollilah we already have an excellent facility and many of the costs have already been covered. However, aside from the basketball league, we are also creating our very own GAMES ROOM.

By the Grace of Allah, we have khuddam who have already donated many items including: 42 inch LCD TV, Xbox 360, Kinect among other donations. If you are able to make any monetary donations or have any equipment that we can use in this room (table tennis table, gym equipment, couch etc.) then please make an effort to help in this initiative. The only limiting factor is our funds, and with everyone's joint effort and with the help of Allah, we will gain blessings every time anyone makes use of our sacrifice. We will be collecting donations starting this Sunday, December 9 and will also have a donation box set up in the school property.

MANDATORY EVALUATION/TRYOUT

In order to take part in this league, there will be a MANDATORY evaluation/tryout this Sunday, December 9 at the School Property starting with Fajr prayer at 6:15 am. There is no exception - you must attend in order to be selected for this league because you have to show that you can make this commitment. The evaluation will consist of various drills and testing in order to determine the athletic and basketball skills associated with each player. This will help the captains decide which player they would like to have on their team when deciding during the DRAFT. Anyone who attends can be a part of this league but attendance is required. If for any extreme circumstances you will not be able to attend but wish to take part, please contact Qaid sahib or myself directly. Although the randoms players have been assigned to the teams at the moment, you can explore the left sidebar and see how the divisions, teams and players are set up. We will be recording statistics including: FG (field goals), Points, Assists, Rebounds, Steals, Blocks and Turnovers.

LEAGUE LEADERS and MVP AWARD

Prizes will be awarded to the winning team with the best season record, the championship team (of playoffs), and for the league leaders in POINTS, ASSISTSREBOUNDS, STEALS and BLOCKS. There will also be an MVP award which will be given to player who is not only shown his value to his team, but also his exemplary value as a member of Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya by showcasing to the rest of Khuddam how one should conduct themself on and off the court.

VIDEO FOOTAGE

Inshallah with the help of our Nazim Isha'at, we will be recording footage from our league games and creating highlight reels from every weekend. These will be not only passed on to our fellow Khuddam, but will be posted on the Khuddam National Youtube Channel. We are also in the works for a logo design, if you have any design ideas, please submit those to our Nazim Isha'a't - Faateh Malik Sahib.

May Allah grant us the strength to make this league a successful one. May Allah grant us the good from this initiative and keep us away from its bad. May Allah forgive our shortcomings and enable us to carry out the true message of Islam by opening the ears and hearts so that they may listen. Ameen.
