Birds Fly Away with a Split

The Amato’s Majors hosted the Cape Cardinals in a rare game under the lights. It was a low scoring affair with the Amato’s club drawing blood in the bottom of the 1st. Mary Farnkoff lead off with a base hit, advancing on a sacrifice bunt by Jamie Dillon. After another out, Chloe Gorey stretched an easy single into a double as she caught the red birds napping and not covering 2nd base. After swiping 3rd base, Gorey scored on a double by Grace Bailer. Chelsea Hughes next to bat drove in the 3rd run of the inning on a base hit.

The crimson fowl would score 2 in the top of the third on 2 walks, a base hit and pair of wild pitches. The home Green and Gold had their chances in the next 3 innings but ran themselves out of chances along with solid defense by the Cardinals. The Amato’s Girlz were able to plate another run in the bottom of the 5 with a leadoff base hit by Emily Jeffords who then stole second and third. The next two batters were retired swinging.

With a 2 run deficit, the Cardinals were able to rally and score 2 in the top of the 6th on two walks and 2 hits. The Green and Gold threatened in the bottom of the 6th, stranding runners on 2nd & 3rd with the help of a questionable call of the home plate umpire forcing the game into extra innings. The Red Birds came out with a leadoff walk, followed by a strikeout, then another walk. The next batter put the ball in play, and was bobbled scoring the go ahead run. The next batter stepped up to the plate and cracked a 2 run double to centerfield and later scored on a base hit for a 4 run lead before the side was put out. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th, a walk, then 3 base hits scored 2 runs before a runner was called out at 3B attempting to advance ending the game with a 8-6 win for the Cardinals.

Game notes: Abbey Murrell pitched a complete game only allowing 5 earned runs on 5 hits, 9 walks and season high 13 strike outs. Farnkoff and Gorey each no passed balls throwing out a runner from behind the plate. Grace Bailer snagged another line drive, and doubled off a base runner for the third double play of the season. Farnkoff scored a pair of runs and had 2 walks, Gorey had 3 hits and 4 stolen bases, Dillon had 2 sac bunts and 2 bunt singles.
