Dragons Get Late Push to Defeat Pizza Bella
The Dragons found themselves a little closer than they desired against Pizza Bella after four innings, but were able to use a big top of the fifth to give them the 17-3 win. With the win, the Dragons improved to 8-1, while Pizza Bella dropped to 2-4 at the All-Star Break.
The Dragons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. John Kochanski walked and Kevin Sickle singled. Mike White then hit an RBI double and Tom Hannon scored Sickle with a single.
The top of the second was also kind to the Dragons, as they scored four more runs to give them a six-run advantage. White and Hannon had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Kochanski singled in White, followed by a three-run round-tripper by Sickle to give the Dragons the 6-0 foothold.
Following a scoreless third, the Dragons put two more runs on the board in the top of the fourth. Kochanski singled to start things off and scored two batters later when White hit a two-run homerun. The Dragons were then up 8-0.
Pizza Bella finally found the scoring column in their half of the fourth, also scoring two runs. Shannon Claherty walked to lead off, scoring later on an RBI groundout by Bernie Ambrosavage. Kenny Klimek also had an RBI in the inning, scoring Gary Wolczak on a single. Pizza Bella was then down eight, 10-2.
The Dragons tacked on nine runs in the top of the fifth inning to all but clinch the game. Hannon lead the way with three hits in the frame, while White and Nick Saracino each had two. Hannon, Sickle, and Saracino each had two runs batted in, as well to stretch the lead to 17-3 got the Dragons.
Pizza Bella went down swinging in the bottom of the fifth in an effort to continue the game, but it was to no avail. Wolczak singled to start the inning, scoring later on an RBI double by Klimek, but the scoring ended there at 17-3.
Kochanski (1-0) earned the win in his first career start for the Dragons. He went the distance, allowing the three runs on just five hits. He struck out seven and walked four.
White and Hannon led the way offensively for the Dragons. White was 6-for-8 with a homerun, double, and four runs batted in. Hannon was also 6-fo-8, tripling and knocking in three. Sickle added five RBI in the win.
Michael P. Stella (1-1) took the loss on the hill for Pizza Bella. He pitched four-and-one-third innings, allowing all 17 runs on 21 hits. He struck out two and walked three. Wolczak also pitched for Pizza Bella, allowing one hit and walking two in two-thirds of an inning.
Klimek led the way for Pizza Bella at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs batted in.
The Dragons would next play Mericle Real Estate the same day at 3 pm. Pizza Bella will next play Bunch O'Swingers on Sunday, July 23 at 12 noon.
