Seamen Get First Ten-Run Victory
The Long John Silver's Seamen got their first 10-run victory of the season and helped move themselves into playoff position with a 16-5 win over Saturday Crush. With the win, the Seamen improved to 5-6 overall, while Saturday Crush fell to 4-5.
The scoring got started in the top of the first as LJS was able to put one run on the board. Dan Schwartz hit a lead-off home run to give the Seamen the early 1-0 lead.
The Seamen would tack on four runs in the next inning, with three coming on another long ball. Danny Paveletz started the inning with a single and Bob Bomboy walked, followed by a single by Kenny Kandrac. Joe Kus hit into a fielder's choice, but a run scored on the play. Paveletz then stepped to the plate and hit a three-run home run to make it a 5-0 game.
Saturday Crush got on the scoreboard in their half of the second, managing to plate one run. Andy Peck singled with one out, and after a walk by Mark Belles, Justin Gober singled and Peck scored on the play thanks to an overthrow to make it a 5-1 contest.
Two more runs would come across for the Crush in the bottom half of the third inning. Peck singled and moved to third on a single by Belles. Shawn Ashton then hit a sacrifice fly to score Peck. With two outs, Jeff Wascavage walked and Belles singled, with a runner scoring on the play. This made it a 5-3 ball game.
The Seamen were almost able to close out the game in the fifth, scoring seven runs to make it a nine-run diffential. Kus singled and Paveletz reached on a fielder's choice. Schwartz then reached on another fielder's choice, but Paveletz was forced out. Bomboy hit an RBI single. With two outs, Kus singled to score a run and Paveletz hit his second home run of the contest, scoring three runs. Schwartz and Bomboy then singled and Kandrac reached on a fielder's choice. Kus then singled home two runs to make it a 12-3 game.
Four more runs would score in the top of the sixth for the Seamen. With one down, Kandrac singled and Kus followed with a double. Paveletz hit an RBI single before Schwartz hit his second home run of the game to close out the scoring for Long John Silver's, making it 16-3.
Saturday Crush made an attempt at a comeback in the last of the sixth, but they were only able to muster two runs. Peck, Belles, and Ashton hit consecutive singles, with Peck scoring on the play following Ashton's single. Gober then walked, but with the bases loaded, the Crush then stalled, getting three straight outs -- one of them resulted in a sacrifice fly to score the final run of the game, making it a 16-5 final in favor of the Seamen.
Kandrac (2-3) got the win on the hill for the Seamen. He got his third complete game of the year, allowing five runs on 12 hits. He also walked five in the victory.
The Dans (Paveletz and Schwartz) led the way for the Seamen at the plate. Paveletz was 4-for-7 with two home runs, seven RBI, and four runs scored. Schwartz was 5-for-9 with two round-trippers, three runs batted in, and four runs scored. Kus also had four hits in the win, including a double, three RBI, and four runs scored.
Belles (1-1) went the distance for Saturday Crush in the loss. He allowed all 16 runs on 17 hits, striking out eight and walkiing five.
Peck paced the Crush offensively, going a perfect 6-for-6 with an RBI and three runs scored. Ashton picked up two hits and a run batted in, and Gober had three hits in the loss.
Both teams would be around for another game to complete their double-header immediately following this game.
