Dragons Jump on Sat Cru Early
The Dragons were able to take the success that they had in the 2nd Annual BWBL Charity Classic and carry it over into their first game of the 2006 season, defeating Saturday Crush by the score of 5-3 in a game that was featured on WBRE's Big Board Sports. The Dragons start the young season at 1-0, while the Crush dropped to 2-1 on the campaign.
The Dragons were able to score three early runs to get a lead that they would never surrender. Mikey Holloway led off with a walk, but was forced at second. Mike White then singled and Tom Hannon had a sacrifice to score John Kochanski from third. Kevin Sickle then came up and hit a two-run homerun to left to give the Dragons the 3-0 lead.
Following a scoreless second, the Dragons tacked on two more runs in the top of the third, giving them a five-run advantage. Kochanski walked to start things off, Sickle walked two batters later, and then Holloway and Kochanski had back-to-back singles, with two runs scoring on the plays. The Dragons took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the third.
Saturday Crush was finally able to score in their half of the third, capitalizing on consecutive singles by Ryan Hart, Justin Gober, and Andy Peck. Shawn Ashton recorded a sacrifice fly for an RBI, and Hart and Gober also had a run batted in apiece, getting them to within two, 5-3.
Both Ashton and Hannon, along with their respective defenses, were able to shut down the opposition through the last three innings, as the score finished at 5-3 in favor of the Dragons.
Hannon (1-0) got the win, going the distance for the Dragons. He scattered 11 hits, striking out three and walking two. Holloway led the way at the dish, going 3-for-5 for the winners, while Sickle added two RBI and two runs scored.
Ashton (1-1) took the loss for the Crush, also pitching the entire contest. He surrendered just seven hits, while striking out three and walking four. Gober led the way offensively, going 4-for-5 with an RBI.
The Dragons still had another game to play Sunday evening, as they would face the Ball Wackers in the very next game. Saturday Crush will next play a double-header next Sunday (June 25) against perennial playoff contenders, Mericle Real Estate. The first pitch of the double-dip is slated for 6 pm.
