Volk Packs a 7-6 Championship Win

In a rematch of the 2009 Girls Majors Championship, Volk packaging hosted the defending champs, the Amato’s Majors for the 2010 Championship tonight. Volk wins by the slimmest of margins 7-6.

The Green and Gold drew blood first as leadoff batter Mary Farnkoff worked the count for a base on balls advancing to 2nd base, then 3rd base as no one was covering on a bunt attempt, then scored on a throwing error. Chloe Gorey then took one for the team being hit by a pitch. Then stole 2nd base. Abbey Murrell then found an opening in the infield for a base hit advancing the runner to 3rd base, Gorey then scored on a delayed double steal for the 2nd run of the game. After another stolen base, and 2 strikeouts. Chelsea Hughes launched a one run bomb to deep right center for a stand up triple. But was stranded there after a walk and another strikeout.

Both pitchers, Murrell and Lilly Volk dominated for most of the game with a base hit in the bottom of the first and second, scratching for a run in the bottom of the 2nd & third making it a one run game, 3-2 going into the 4th.

Volk shut down the offense after the first, facing only 14 batters through the next 4 innings while tacking on two runs in the bottom half of the 4th with the help of Olivia Gerhke’s leadoff double, Haley Solty’s one out RBI triple, then scoring on a fielder’s choice, before Farnkoff picking off a runner at third base and the home team taking the lead 5 – 3.

The bottom of the 5th, the Volk club notched an insurance run as Lauren Tudor scored on a base hit by Kaleigh Scoville. The inning ended with another runner trying to steal home as Murrell trying to pick off a care free runner at 2nd base, then the alert shortstop Emily Jeffords threw a pill to home as Farnkoff easily applied the tag for the final out of the inning.

Down 2 runs going into the top of the 6th, Farnkoff worked a 1-2 count for a free pass. Gorey advanced the runner on a sac bunt she almost beat out for a hit. Murrell then notched her 2nd hit of the game and put runners on the corners with one out. The next pitch Murrell was off to the races, advancing to 2nd base. Two wild pitches later, the tying run crossed the plate. Grace Bailer next up, having some vicious cuts on the night, then beat out an infield hit advancing to third on the earlier wild pitches, then scoring on a passed ball to take the lead 7-6. After a strikeout for the 2nd out of the inning, Hughes then drew a walk, advanced to 2nd, but was stranded there as Volk retired the next batter for her 11th strikeout of the night.

Not phased, Gerhke behind in the count, drew a free pass. Speedy Tori Hale then laid down a great bunt for a single advancing the tying run to 3rd base. Stealing second base, the winning run was now in scoring position. A wild pitch, then scored the tying run. Solty’s up next drew a free pass and moved to 2nd on a stolen base. Volk up next, laced a line drive that was caught for the first out of the inning. Murrell next fanned the next batter notching her 9th K of the night. Victoria Timm next up saw one pitch fly by her and to the back stop for a wild pitch and the deciding run cross home plate for a 7-6 win.

Game Notes: This was by far the best and most competitive game of the season. Both pitchers pitching extremely well. Both teams only had one error, good throws by Jeffords to home and first after looking back a runner at 3rd base. Farnkoff doing a great job behind the plate holding onto pitches, and play at the plate for an out. The outfield getting the ball into the infield quickly on two big hits. 4 lead changes in a 6 inning game, each club with 9 stolen bases, each team with one RBI triple. WOW>

No one hung their head, in the game the whole way. THAT was a way to end the season. Amato’s didn’t win the game, but they are as much winners as any girl on that field. Well done to all the teams, coaches and players.

Thank you parents, and thank you to Mr. Marchili and Mr. Maroon for umpiring so many of our games this season!
