Orioles Outlast Grays

On a day better suited to water sports the Orioles and the Grays had at it for nine innings at EMLL Field. Oscar Gutierrez started for the O's and initially he wasn't sharp (possibly due to pitching for the third time in four days), walking three of the first five batters to fill the bases with two out. It looked like he might escape unscored upon anyway when the Grays number six hitter popped one up toward the second baseman. But the wind was pushing and the ball bounced off the glove and the Grays got a run. Oscar then had a strong second inning but in the third the Grays turned three hits two walks and a throwing error into a pair of runs to lead 3-0. Briefly.

Tyler Albany started for the Grays and after a pair of infield singles to lead off the first he retired eight straight Orioles. Then Jesse Vazquez worked a walk and stole second. Adam Bowen singled him home and stole second himself and Oscar's third straight Orioles single drove in Bowen to make it 3-2.

The Orioles tied it in the fourth, Ajit Iyer walking and coming around to score after hits by Mark Heinze and Micah Holt.

After a scoreless fifth inning the Grays busted things open in the sixth, greeting the Orioles new pitcher with an eight spot. Doubles by Tim O'Connor, Tyler Albany and 'new guy' Easton Gaber contributed mightily, as did singles by Steve Umlor and Zach Gondek and a pair of HBP's and a couple of errors.

Down now 11-3 the Orioles promptly gave up. NOT! They put three up against a tiring Albany in the bottom half (aided by a couple Grays errors) and they took full advantage in the bottom of the seventh when the Grays 'helped' their new pitcher Andrew Coletti by committing six errors including four consecutive balls in play. The Orioles also hit the ball well including at least three legitimate hits and drew a couple walks.

The Grays were running out of healthy bodies at this point but they gamely started up in the top of the eighth and tied the score at 13 by cranking out five straight singles. Then their bubble burst and they went strikeout, automatic out for the guy who had to leave with the fractured radius and groundout to the pitcher.

The Orioles scored twice more in the bottom to reestablish their two run lead and despite a leadoff single from Glenn Vorhes and a one out almost double by Tim O'Connor (out trying for it) the Grays went scoreless in the ninth and the Orioles stood victorious. Time of game: seemed like all day.
