I pitched for Larry and the Smokey's from 1989-92 we were 48-12 in 1989. We went to Utah and beat their state champs 5 of 6 games. our pitching staff those years were myself Butch Metzger Steve Brown and Busfield..Our SS was Val King Tony Lopez played 3rd and caught Alan Peel also was a catcher Bob Castleberry in center Wayne Davis in leftfield Marty Wright at 1b it was an interesting time traveling with Larry one year going to play the Crabs in Arcata Larry's car broke down his famed Riviera!! I stayed with him 3 days after the games were over waiting for his car to be repaired finally he gave up and we came back Larry called me the next day to tell me his car was ready!!!! He said Arcata was ran by the Mofia!! I have many more stories but I'll end with this one One time at Renfree field Larry's grandson was working the gate and taking money to enter the parking lot someone decided not to pay!! About the second inning I was warming up to pitch and Larry's grandson yelled to me to come quick something was going on with Larry so we stopped the game to go find Larry I went out through the dugout and here comes Larry all pissed off some SOB tried not to pay he says!! so I'm like so what happened Larry? He said he handled it so we went back to playing next inning here come an ambulance sirens blaring Larry had punched the guy and he was laying on the sidewalk Larry knocked him out!! Larry was over 70 yrs old LMAO!!! Miss you Larry!!

I was truly saddened to recently learn of Skipper's passing. I knew Larry while sponsoring the Smokeys from 1998-2000,with the Good Nite Inns and the Ramada snd Howard Johmsom Hotels during my tenures as Sales & Marketing and General Manager. He was the definition of "character" and it was a blast being around him. Between constantly showing off his muscles and challenging me to arm wrestle, and talking about the years line-up and whether " that TV prima donna pitcher of mine can actually get one close to the plate", you never knew where the conversation would take you. His knowledge of baseball, generosity, and passion for the sport will be greatly missed. One of my fondest treasures is a baseball from the 2000 season signed by Larry, Tim Busfield, Fernando Vina, Omar Vizquel, and Rey Ordonez. May his spirit and example live on in the annals of baseball lore.
