Pennsbury Field Hockey Team Team Tryout Information and Expectations

  • Varsity and Junior Varsity Tryouts will take place on Monday, August 13 through August 16 at PHS East Field Hockey Practice Field (located ajacent to the pool house on the west side of it...not game field!).
  • Morning and late afternoon sessions
  • Every player needs a completed Physical Form dated on or after June 1, 2018.  Please see FamilyID.com for all forms and requirements.
  • Selections will be made and posted on the evening of August 16. 
  • Pre-Season begins immediately 8-11 and 4pm-6pm Monday through Friday.
  • Expect a practice on Labor Day.
  • The first scrimmage is slated for August 21. 
  • Once school starts, there is practice every day after school until mid-October.

 

REQUIRED STICK and AGILITY SKILLS

 

Below please find the basic skills that each player should have coming in to Pre-Season. Each skill should be practiced at top speed.  Put pressure on yourself to perform each skill better and strong than the last.

 Passing-hit Collect a ball and hit it through a set of cones 1.5 yards apart

Receiving Starting outside a receiving box
Cut into the box
Receive a ball
Take it cleanly outside the box

Keep stick away from feet
Keep feet moving
Shooting Balls at top of circle
Collect a ball and shoot within 1 touch of collecting

Tested for 1 minute
How many balls can you collect and shoot on cage in 1 minute?
Prepare ball towards cage

Recognize where you are

Full body towards cage-don’t lean back

3 laps in 5:15 – 2 minutes rest
2 laps in 3:15 – 2 minutes rest

PRACTICE!
Quickness Shuttle Run
Cones start 7 yards apart
Run to first cone, pick up ball
Return to start - - drop ball
Repeat with 2nd ball, done
Stay low
Quick turns

Don’t throw the ball way before you near the cone
Tracking Carry the ball on different angles down the field
Start at the 50 yard line
Dribble on angles while using:
 - “c” dodges, “s” dodges, etc. “fakes”
 - deception (look one way, go the other)
 - change of pace, acceleration then slow
 - use skills on the ground and in the air
Head up
