Origination of the "Tony Lobasso Outstanding Service Award"

I knew Tony for only a short time. He was always around the school. I knew him as a quiet, kind individual. When my daughter was in second grade, Fr. Lopinto (moderator of the athletic association) recruited me for an Executive Board position in the Association. As i was researching the work that i had to do, Tony's name came up often. He was the outgoing Boy's Intramural Coordinator. I had to call him several times and always found him wanting to help any way he could. The day of the Executive Board Elections was also the May Crowning in St. Gregs. Fr. Lopinto was in the Hall for the May Crowning when he was given a message and ran from the Hall. It was learned later that he was informed that Tony had taken ill and a ambulance was on the way. They were very close friends. Tony had suffered a heart attack and died that afternoon. As word got out, the incumbent board was devastated, and the meeting and elections were cancelled for that evening. In the days and months that followed, it was realized how much work Tony had been doing for the Association and the kids in his quiet way, so no one really took note of it until he was gone.
Each year there was an outstanding service award given at the award dinner. That September it was renamed the "TONY LOBASSO OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD"

The following poem was put into the Award's Journal. It best described Tony.

MR ANTHONY LOBASSO IN MEMORIAL PRESENCE

Some people enter our lives
like deer
slipping in and out
of the woods.
They touch our earth
and as we stop
to look at them
they disappear as quietly
as they came
but you feel blessed
for having experienced
their gentle presence
and you give thanks
that the world
is a better place
because of the joy
they brought.
