Kings Grant Lynnhaven Recreation Association (KGLRA)


KGLRA’s mission is to promote, encourage and organize opportunities for the youth of the area to play safe and enjoyable sports, regardless of race, creed, ethnic or economic backgrounds. By creating a fair and positive sporting experience that develops sportsmanship, respect, and friendly competition.


Board of Directors

The Board will support the work of King Grant’s recreation association and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:


Leadership, governance and oversight

  • Serving as a trusted advisor to develop and implement policies to improve and support the overall mission of the association  

  • Regularly measuring the performance and effectiveness of each sport; reviewing agenda and supporting materials prior to board and committee meetings 

  • Approving KGLRA’s annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions; being informed of, and meeting all, legal and fiduciary responsibilities 

  • Identifying and recruiting other Board Members 

  • Partnering with other board members to ensure that board resolutions are carried out 

  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments 

  • Acting as an ambassador for the organization 

  • Ensuring KGLRA’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the King’s Grant & Lynnhaven communities it serves


Board terms/participation

KGLRA’s Board Members will serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for one additional term. Board meetings will be held monthly and committee meetings will be held in coordination with full board meetings.



This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about KGLRA’s mission. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to attract other well-qualified, high-performing Board Members.  Ideal candidates will have the following qualifications:

  • A commitment to and understanding of youth athletics 

  • Savvy diplomatic skills and a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals 

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving the lives of the youth in our communities

  • Service on KGLRA’s Board of Directors is without remuneration, except for administrative support, travel, and accommodation costs in relation to Board Members’ duties.


Responsibilities of Board Officers:

President~ Sarah Kyler

  • Preside at all meetings and delegate duties as necessary to ensure the association’s mission is fulfilled.


Vice President | Area Chairperson~ (Currently Vacant... Volunteers Welcome)

  • Preside at all meetings in the absence of the board president. 

  • Serve as liaison between the City Parks & Recreation office and KGLRA.

  • Attend organizational meetings held by the city.


Treasurer~ Melissa White

  • Handle all monies of the association and keep detailed records of all transactions.

  • Deposit all funds received and pay bills approved by the association in a timely manner. 

  • Provide financial report at every monthly meeting.


Secretary~ Linda Kaley-Pentacost

  • Ensure minutes of each meeting are kept and provide copies of previous meetings minutes.

  • Prepare, copy and distribute promotional flyers

  • Update calendar with key events


Board Members | Coordinators by Sport:

  • Volleyball- Amber Wood
  • Softball- Ann Hobbs
  • Basketball- Cindy Byrd
  • Flag Football- David McKenna


Each sport has a director/coordinator to ensure the following responsibilities are met:

  • Notify community and area schools of registrations.

  • Facilitate registration and conduct drafts if necessary.

  • Ensure qualified coaches are in place for all teams.

  • Secure practice and game sites

  • Submit budget prior to start of season for board approval

  • Secure equipment, uniforms and trophies

  • Submit team and individual registrations are sent to Area Chairperson

  • Secure gym supervisors and referees/umpires

  • Organize and communicate all practice, game and tournament schedules


Committee Chairpersons:

Scholarship~ Reggie Bailey

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the association and the Hampton Roads Community Foundation for the annual selection process of the Jarrod Camper Smith scholarship.


Coaches Development~ (Currently Vacant... Volunteers Welcome)

  • Provide workshops to promote the continued mentorship and advancement of coaches for each sport.


Webmaster~ Amber Wood (Additional Volunteers Welcome)

  • Serve as Administrator of the Association webpage. 

  • Maintain “online payment” features to ensure information is protected and required reports are submitted to the Treasurer. 

  • Webpage Permissions:

    • President and Area Chair- Access to all, minus “online payment” portal/reports.

    • Sports Coordinators- Team-specific only.  Registration system is set to report only allow access to roster information.

    • Changes to the Splash page will be suggested, approved and made at the monthly meeting. Any mid-month changes may be sent via email to the Webmaster for posting, as able.


Equipment~ Jim Noonan-Sloan

  • Serve as the primary liaison with each sport director/coordinator to ensure that all equipment, uniforms are provided, collected and stored properly.


Groundskeeper~ (Currently Vacant... Volunteers Welcome)

  • Prepares and sustains the community softball and football fields for practices.
