JV Beats Schroeder and Sutherland
Coach Skalicky’s Fairport JV beat Webster Schroeder 8-1and Pittsford Sutherland 14-2 in a Saturday double-header in Victor. The first game was against a formerly undefeated Webster Schroeder squad that is likely the best team other than Fairport in the division.
Victoria Byrne went the distance for Fairport giving up one earned run on seven hits while striking out ten and walking one. She was helped by some excellent glove work in center field by Claudia Giambrone and as well as Morgan Kennedy at shortstop.
Offensively, the Raiders were helped by 10 walks given up by an otherwise tough pitcher. Molly Caliel walked once and singled once while scoring twice. Sophia Amadori walked twice and singled once allowing her to score in the first inning.
Claudia Giambrone singled twice and scored in the sixth inning. Erin Ozminkowski had a nice day with the bat going two for four and scoring a run in the fifth.
In the second game, Fairport defeated Pittsford Sutherland in five innings. Megan Chilbert went the distance giving up one earned run while striking out nine on four hits and three walks.
Defense was strong once again for the Red Raiders. Courtney Heineger made a beautiful shoestring catch at second base in the fourth inning. Hannah Radell threw out two Pittsford runners trying to steal third base on bullet throws.
On offense, the Raiders scattered ten hits. Claudia Giambrone went two for two including a double to the fencein the third inning. Lauren Merkley went two for threeincluding a double that hit the fence in the fourth inning. Sarah Koehler ripped a double down the third base line in the first that plated two runs. Grace Anne LaFay drove in a couple of runs with a single to center in the 3rd inning.
Claudia Wrona scored a couple of times and drove in a runin the fourth with a single to center field. Sophie Amadoriscored twice and drove in a run with a single to right center in the third inning.

JV Raiders Shut Out Hilton
Coach Skalicky’s squad continues to roll, this time beating Hilton 21-0 on a rainy, cold evening. Despite the inclement weather, Fairport was sharp in all aspects of the game.
Megan Chilbert threw a no-hit shutout with seven K’s, allowing only four runners to reach base on walks. She was aided by a very sharp middle infield. Lauren Merkley made a couple of plays from shortstop on slow rollers that required quick throws. Holly Buchholz did the same at second while adding a beauty of a double play on a pop fly. Claudia Wrona added a couple of nice plays at first base in the fifth to end the game.
At the plate, Merkley led the Raiders by going two for three with four runs batted in while scoring three times . In the fourth inning, Lauren came up to bat with bases loaded and hit a drive over the left fielder’s head for a double, clearing the bases.
Chilbert helped herself by going two for two with 3 RBI’s and two runs scored including a single in the first over the second baseman’s head which brought in two runs. Sara Koehler went two for three with one RBI and four runs scored, including a double to left in the fifth to score Holly Buchholz.
Sophie Amadori went three for four with one RBI and two runs scored while Molly Caliel went two for four including a double in the fourth inning to score Lauren Merkley. She had two RBI’s and three runs scored.
Mackenzie Mulhurn continues to swing the bat well, going one for two with one RBI on a single to right field plus a deep drive to center field that was caught by Hilton. She also scored once. Fellow 10th grader Holly Buchholz went two for four with a couple of singles allowing her to score twice.
Fairport JV defeats Webster Thomas in Skalicky Debut
Raiders new JV coach Stacy Skalicky took her squad on the road for their first win at the DeWitt Elementary School fields against a good hitting Webster Thomas squad. The game was never contested as Coach Skalicky’s girls dominated from the first inning.
Fairport racked up 19 hits off Webster’s pitchers and took advantage of 12 free bases either from being walked or hit by a pitch.
Shortstop Morgan Kennedy went 3 for 4 at the plate and walked twice she scored four runs. Landsdown Kerrigan caught and went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Victoria Byrne threw six innings, giving up seven hits and 2 earned runs while striking out five. Byrne also went 2-5. Megan Chilbert threw the seventh inning giving up two hits and no earned runs.
Claudia Giambrone went 3 for 6 with a double and two singles

May 17, Fairport @ Victor Blue Devils, Fairport loses 9-8.
Fairport traveled to Victor, to play their last game of the year. In the “been there done there” category, the Red Raiders fell behind early and trailed 9-1, after five innings. Victor only managed 6 hits off Pitcher Jen Maysuch, but along with some wild pitches and errors, made their opportunities count.
In the top of the sixth, Fairport started to come back. Shannon Horan led off with a single, Emily Molinich walked and a Jess Koneski single loaded the bases. Rachel Dejean smacked a 2 run single up the middle and then Maddy Horowitz doubled to left center, for another 2 runs making the score 9-5. Shaelyn Earley kept the rally going, with a single up the middle to start the seventh. Horan bunted for a hit and Leah Erickson walked to load the bases, with no one out. Molinich shot a grounder through the left side of the infield that scored Earley. Jess Koneski hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Horan, making it 9-7. With runners on first and third, Victor elected to throw to second base to get the runner stealing for the second out. That allowed Erickson to race home from third, to make the score 9-8. A line drive out to center field, ended the season for Fairport.
Fairport ended the season with a 15-4 record, with 3 of those losses by one run. Thanks to the girls for an exciting season!!
May 16 Pittsford Sutherland Knights @ Fairport: Fairport loses 8-7
For the first time all year, the Fairport had a seven run inning scored against them. It would be thedifference in a tough 8-7 loss to Sutherland. Pitcher, Alina Fowler, set down the Knights 1-2-3 in the first. The Red Raiders jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the inning. Shannon Horan laid down one of her patented bunts, Fowler ripped a double to right center and Jess Koneski hit a towering drive to left for a triple.
The second inning was the unfortunate inning. Six hits and two Fairport errors, gave the Knights their seven runs. Fairport closed the gap to 7-4, scoring twice in the third. Koneski crushed a pitch to center for a double and then Emily Molinich walked. Both came around to score, on a combination of passed balls and wild pitches. In the bottom of the fourth, Rachel Dejean laid down a text book bunt, followed by bunts by Horan and Erickson, which loaded the bases. Fowler walked, forcing one run in and Horan scored on a wild pitch, to make it 7-6 after four.
With Sutherland runners on the corners in the fifth, the Red Raiders made a great heads up play. When the Sutherland runner on first broke for second, catcher Koneski pump faked to second. The runner on third broke for home and Koneski chased the runner back towards third. Koneski threw to third basemen Maddy Horowitz, who tagged the runner for the out. The Knights managed to score once that inning, but Fairport would get that run right back. With one out and a full count, Maddy Horowitz smoked a pitch to center for a Home Run!
Jen Maysuch came in to pitch in the sixth and struck out two, in a 1-2-3 inning. In the seventh with Sutherland runners on second and third, first baseman Molinich, made a diving catch on a line drive headed down the right field line. That was the third out and gave the Red Raiders a chance in their last at bat. However Fairport was set down in order, to fall to 15-3, with the 8-7 loss.
May 15 Rush Henrietta @ Fairport, Fairport wins 11-4
Pitcher, Sydney Bolan made her last start of the season for the JV team against the Royal Comets. A bases loaded triple in the first, put Henrietta up 3-0. After that Bolan was her usual dominating self, striking out 7, while giving up just 4 hits, in her five innings pitched.
Shannon Horan led off for Fairport, with a bunt and she raced to third on an Eva FitzSimmons bunt. An infield error brought Horan home. In the next inning, Maddy Horowitz drew her team leading 13th walk and went to third, on a Katie Campbell shot to left center. Rachel Dejean drove in Horowitz, with an RBI groundout. Horan then executed a squeeze play, as Campbell slid into home on Horan’s bunt single. Bolan singled, followed by an Alyssa Gentile hit up the middle, which scored Bolan. Emma Lutzke continued her hot hitting with a single to center that scored Gentile, putting Fairport on top 6-3 after two.
Henrietta closed the gap to 6-4 in the top of the fifth, before the Red Raiders blew in open in the bottom of the inning. Bolan drilled a single to right and continued to third, as the right fielder let the ball roll between her legs. Gentile singled to plate Bolan, Molinich reached on a fielder’s choice and Lutzke singled to center. Both Molinich and Lutzke score on wild pitches to make the score 9-4. Horowitz walked again and scored on a Shaylen Earley triple that hit the center field fence. Horan slapped a single to center that scored Earley and ended the scoring for the game.
Alina fowler pitched the last two innings, striking out the side in the sixth and a 1-2-3 seventh, making the final 11-4.
May 14 Brockport @ Fairport, Fairport wins 18-0 (mercy rule)
Coming off a disappointing loss the day before, the Red Raiders came out with a vengeance scoring the maximum 7 runs, in the first inning. All nine Fairport batters reached base, as no one had made an out when they scored their seventh run. Hits were by Jen Maysuch and Maddy Horowitz (doubles), Emily Molinich, Jess Koneski, Emma Lutzke and Shaylen Earley. Rachel Dejean walked and Leah Erickson and Katie Campbell reached on errors.
Pitcher, Jen Maysuch pitching in a game for the first time in almost a year, was sharp. She allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 7 in four innings. In the second inning two more Red Raiders crossed the play. Dejean and Erickson singled, with Dejean scoring on a RBI fielder’s choice by Molinich, followed up by an Lutzke line drive single over second base, that scored Erickson. In the third inning two more runs scored, to make it 11-0. Earley singled for her second hit of the game and scored on Dejean’s second hit of the game. Erickson smacked one up the middle for her second hit and Maysuch knocked home Dejean, with her second hit.
The Red Raiders wrapped it up in the fourth, scoring seven runs again. Lutzke started it off with her third hit and came in to score, on Horowitz’s second double of the game. Mackenzie Murphy walked, followed by Earley’s third single, to load the bases. Rachel O’Connor drew a RBI walk and Eva FitzSimmons got an RBI the hard way, by getting hit with a pitch. Maysuch ripped a grounder through the right side that scored Early and O’Connor. Koneski roped one to left scoring FitzSimmons and then Horowitz popped a hit to left, scoring Maysuch with the seventh run of the inning.
Pitcher Alina Fowler closed out the game in the top of the fifth, striking out one to make the final 18-0.
May 13 Webster Schroeder @ Fairport, Fairport loses 7-6
Welcome to the Fairport JV Fall Ball season. Not really, but that is what the weather felt like on a bone chilling, Monday afternoon. Pitcher, Alina Fowler only gave up one earned run in her three innings pitched, but it was the six unearned runs on three Red Raiders errors, that led to their downfall.
Trailing 7-0 going into the bottom of the fourth, Fairport started to chip away. Eva FitzSimmons walked, and then Sydney Bolan singled for Fairport’s first hit of the game. FitzSimmons came in the score on a RBI groundout by Emily Molinich. The Red Raiders would close the gap to 7-3, with two more runs in the fifth. Katie Campbell led off with a deep drive to center, for a double. Rachel Dejean hit a blooper to center and Shannon Horan singled to right center to score Campbell. Three batters later, Alyssa Gentile ripped one through the left side of the infield to score Dejean.
Pitcher, Sydney Bolan kept Schroeder off the score sheet the rest of the game, striking out eight in her four innings of work. Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Fairport trailed by four, 7-3. Dejean led off with a walk and was doubled home by Horan. Leah Erickson singled sharply up the middle, followed by a Bolan single that scored Horan and Erickson, making it 7-6 with no one out. A controversial ground ball double play, where pinch runner Shaylen Earley was tagged by the Schroeder second baseman without out the ball in her glove, left Fairport with only one out left. Molinich started the rally up again with a single and then Emma Lutzke ripped a double up the middle, to send Molinich to third. Schroeder hung on, getting a strikeout on the next batter, to end the game.
May 10, Fairport @ Webster Thomas Titans, Fairport wins 19-7
When the top three hitters in your lineup, go 12-15 (.800), with 10 runs scored and 6 RBI, chances are you are going to win. That is exactly what happened, as left fielder, Shannon Horan (4-5), shortstop, Leah Erickson (3-5) and pitcher, Sydney Bolan (5-5), tore up the Thomas pitching staff.
In the first, Erickson singled and Bolan hit a shot to center that hit the fence, for a double. Jess Koneski hit a wicked line drive down the left field line that scored both runners. Thomas came right back to tie the game on a two run homer by their right fielder, Sydney Wilson. Fairport would go back up 3-2 in the second, when Horan knocked a double to left center and Bolan came through with a 2 out RBI single. Thomas kept pace, tying the game in the third at 3-3.
The Red Raiders blew it open in the forth, with a seven run inning. Rachel Dejean stroked a double to left center. A bunt single by Horan, put runners on the corners and Erickson drilled one up the middle for 2 RBI. Bolan’s second double of the game scored Erickson and Bolan would score on a Jen Maysuch hit to right center. Maddy Horowitz was hit by a pitch which loaded the bases for Katie Campbell who worked the count, for a RBI walk. Horan’s second hit of the inning, drove in Maysuch and Horowitz to end the inning, with the maximum seven runs. Thomas would make things interesting again, when Wilson hit her second home run of the game, this time a 3 run shot to make it 10-6 after four.
In the fifth, Bolan launched her third double of the game to right center. Emily Molinich reached on an error, which also scored Bolan. Maysuch walked and Horowitz went to first, when she was hit by a pitch for the second time in two innings. Campbell walked again, which scored Molinich and put Fairport up 12-6.
In the sixth, the Red Raiders scored seven runs again. Horan started it off with her second bunt and fourth hit of the game. Erickson bunted for a hit, followed by Bolan’s fifth hit of the game. Two walks and two Titan errors led to a two run single by Mackenzie Murphy, putting Fairport up 19-7. Heavy rains then took over and ended the game. In three games against Thomas, which has one of the better softball programs in the area, the Red Raiders outscored them 45-12 and out hit them 55-18!
May 8, Fairport @ Penfield Patriots, Fairport wins 11-1
There was electricity in the air, as the Red Raiders traveled to Penfield, to play the Patriots. In fact, there was so much electricity, that the umpires had to stop the game in the sixth inning for 30 minutes, when they saw lightning.
Rachel Dejean led off the game with a sharp single up the middle. Eva FitzSimmons then crushed a pitch over the left fielders head and Coach Natale waved her all the way around the bases for a Home Run! The next hitter, Jen Maysuch laced a triple to center field. Clean up hitter Alyssa Gentile, ripped a line drive down the right field line to score Maysuch, and just like that Fairport was up 3-0. Gentile would come around to score 2 batters later.
Pitcher, Alina Fowler breezed through the first two innings, shutting Penfield down 1-2-3 in both innings with 3 strikeouts. The Patriots would finally break through with a run in the third and then had the bases loaded with no outs in the fourth. Fowler got the first out on an infield fly to shortstop, FitzSimmons, struck the next batter out and escaped on a ground ball to first, for the third out.
Fairport had tacked on 3 more runs in the top of the fourth. Shaelyn Earley drew a walk, and this time it was Dejean blasting a pitch to deep center for a Home Run! FitzSimmons reached on an error, stole second and scored on two wild pitches, as Fairport now led 7-1. In the fifth, three more Red Raiders would cross the plate. Katie Campbell singled up the middle, Emma Lutzke reached on a fielder’s choice and Earley knocked both of them in with a sharp double to left. Earley would eventually score on an error two batters later.
After the delay, Fairport would tack on one more run in the seventh. Emma Lutzke started the inning off with a single and would come around to score 3 hitters later, on a single by FitzSimmons.
May 3 Victor Blue Devils @ Fairport: Fairport wins 9-1
The Red Raiders started a little slow at home against Victor. An error and two batters that were hit by a pitch, loaded the bases with only one out. Pitcher, Sydney Bolan, righted the ship and struck out the next two batters, to escape without any damage. She then struck out all 3 batters in the second, for 5 strikeouts in a row.
Fairport’s bats were also a little slow in waking up, as they only had 1 hit and 1 run in their first two at bats. Shannon Horan bunted to start out for Fairport and then raced to third, on a sacrifice bunt by Leah Erickson. A Bolan RBI groundout, scored Horan from third, for Fairport’s only run heading into the third.
Katie Campbell started off the third with a single to left and was sacrificed to second, by a Rachel Dejean bunt. Horan was hit by a pitch and Erickson singled to load the bases. Bolan then pummeled a pitch down the left field line for a triple that cleared the bases, putting the Red Raiders up 4-0.
Victor would use one of their two hits in the game, to get on the scoreboard, in the fourth. The Red Raiders would get that run right back, in their half of the inning. After fouling off three straight pitches, Jen Maysuch launched a rocket that ended up in the swamp, beyond the right center field fence for a Home Run. Katie Campbell notched her second hit of the game and came in to score on a single to shallow right, by Horan. Erickson’s second of three hits, scored Horan, as Fairport widened its lead to 7-1.
Alyssa Gentile started off the sixth, with a hard single to right. She then did a great job of jumping over a groundball single by Maysuch in the hole between first and second. Maddy Horowitz would knock both runners in, with a blast to left center for a triple, making it 9-1.
Bolan then went on another strikeout spree, striking out the side in the sixth and the first two batters in the seventh. After reaching her season high of 14 strikeouts last game, Bolan topped that, by fanning 15 today. Fairport’s record is now 11-1, with seven games left to play.
May 1, Fairport @ Rush Henrietta Royal Comets, Fairport wins 17-9
Even though they had 3 seventh graders in their JV lineup, Rush Henrietta hung tough with Fairport all afternoon. With one out in the first, Eva FitzSimmons drew a walk, which was followed by an Alina Fowler single. Jess Koneski then jumped on the first pitch she saw and deposited it over the left field fence for her second Home Run in three games. Staked to a 3-0 lead, pitcher, Alina Fowler, took the circle for the Red Raiders. With one out and a runner on second, the number three batter in the Royal Comets lineup, came up to bat. She ripped a line drive that third baseman, Maddy Horowitz caught and threw to second, where Mackenzie Murphy stepped on the bag for the double play.
In the second, Emma Lutzke led off with a single and hustled to third, on a sacrifice bunt by Murphy. A Shaelyn Earley sacrifice fly to left brought Lutzke home. The third inning, featured a single to left by Koneski and a deep fly ball to center by Emily Molinich, for a double that scored Koneski. In the bottom of the inning, Fowler escaped a jam using a pitchers second best friend, the double play ball. (Of course, we all know that a pitchers number one BFF is an umpire with a really big strike zone). Fowler scooped up the grounder, threw to catcher, Koneski who fired to 1st baseman, Molinich to complete the double play.
Next inning, Fairport upped its lead to 6-1. Murphy reached on an error, Earley sent a fly ball to left for a single and Rachel Dejean knocked a pitch to center field, for an RBI. In the bottom of the fourth, the Red Raiders turned their third double play of the game. This time it was Horowitz, with the bases loaded who fielded the grounder, threw home for the first out and then Koneski’s throw to first once to beat the batter down the line, for the second out.
The fifth was a seven run inning for Fairport. Consecutive hits by Koneski, Molinich, Horowitz and a RBI single by Lutzke, scored the first run. Murphy, Earley, FitzSimmons and Fowler would also pick up an RBI in that inning.
The sixth saw Fairport’s lead jump to 14-2 on back to back doubles from Molinich and Horowitz. The Royal Comets fought back, scoring six times in their half of the inning. The Red Raiders answered that in the seventh, with three runs of their own. Alyssa Gentile stroked a 2 run single to left, which scored FitzSimmons and Fowler. Fowler would then strikeout her fourth batter to end the game, making the final 17-9.
April 24, Fairport @ Mendon Vikings, Fairport wins 15-3.
On Tuesday, Fairport traveled to Pittsford, to face a tough Mendon team. After a scoreless first inning, the Red Raiders pushed 4 runs across in the second. With one out, Emily Molinich hit a sinking line drive for a single, followed by a Katie Campbell single. Rachel Dejean reached on a infield hit, that scored Molinich. Shannon Horan continued her hot streak with her second of four hits on the day. After Campbell and Dejean scored on wild pitches, Horan scored on a Leah Erickson rip up the middle.
In the third, Fairport put two more runs on the board. Alyssa Gentile started it off, with shot to left center for a double. Jen Maysuch beat out a bunt and Maddy Horowitz ripped one to left to score both runners. Mendon scored single runs in the second and third to make it 6-2. Fairport then pulled off a perfectly executed relay. When left fielder Horan slipped on a hit to left center, the hitter tried to turn a double into a triple. Horan recovered and threw to shortstop, Erickson who fired to third baseman, Horowitz then applied the tag to nail the batter.
Pitcher, Sydney Bolan helped her cause in the fourth with an RBI groundout that scored speedy Horan from third. Bolan also was keeping the Viking hitters in check, striking out 9 thru four innings.
Maysuch led off the fifth with a hard line drive that the Mendon 2nd baseman snared. She would get her revenge, when she got up for a second time that inning. With the bases loaded, Maysuch absolutely crushed a 0-2 pitch, over the center fielders head. She had to stop at third, as Fairport had now scored 7 runs in the inning, which is the maximum allowed in one inning, at the JV level. That shot pretty much sunk the Vikings, as the scoreboard now read, Fairport 14 Mendon 2.
Earlier in that inning, Molinich had her second single of the game, Horowitz walked and Campbell had reached on an error. Horan swatted a single to right center, scoring Molinich. Erickson knocked in Horowitz with a single and Bolan smoked one to left center to score Campbell and Horan.
Even though Mendon scored 3 times on 9 hits, they were never able to put a big inning together. The reason for that was pitcher, Sydney Bolan, who struck out a season high 14 batters, while only allowing 2 walks. With the win, the Red Raiders raised their record to 9-1.
JV Halfway Report:
Even though it seems like the season just started, it is basically half over. Nine games have been played, with ten more to go. Fairport has an 8-1 record, with a team batting average of .420 and a slugging percentage of .591. The players are coming through in the clutch, with a .463 batting average with runners in scoring position. They have outscored their opponents, 125-37.
On the pitching side, the team ERA is 2.70, with 80 strikeouts in 57 IP. Opponents have a .193 batting average, as the Fairport pitchers have given up only 43 hits, to the 255 batters they have faced.
There is a lot of depth on the team, as it has been a true team effort, every game. You never know who is going come up with a big hit, big catch, or big pitch. There is sure to be even more excitement, in the remaining 10 games.
Fairport vs. Brockport at Webster April 27; Fairport wins 13-0
Fairport vs. Thomas at Webster April 27; Fairport wins 12-0
Fairport traveled to Webster to play two games on Saturday. Dominating pitching was the name of the game today. Alina Fowler 3 IP, 1H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K and Sydney Bolan 11 IP, 3 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 19 K were the pitching numbers. WOW!!
In the first game against Brockport, the Blue Devils never got a runner past second. They led off the game with a single, but that was it until the fifth, when they had another leadoff single.
The Red Raiders would push 3 runs across the plate in the bottom of the first, on a walk to leadoff hitter Shannon Horan, a perfectly placed bunt by Leah Erickson and a double to the fence by Bolan. Then it was Jen Maysuch’s turn to hit one off the fence, this time for a triple.
Six more runs would scamper home in the second. Rachel Dejean crushed a pitch over the right center field fence for a HOME RUN, for the first run of the inning. Horan and Erickson were on base again on an error and single respectively and Bolan knocked them both in again, for her 4th RBI of the game. Jess Koneski hit a one bounce rope to the right field fence for a double and an Emily Molinich liner up the middle, scored Koneski. A single by Maddy Horowitz scored Molinich and the scoreboard now read 9-0.
In the third inning, guess who was on base again for Fairport? That’s right, Horan and Erickson. History didn’t quite repeat itself this time, as Bolan only knocked in Horan collecting another RBI. The fourth inning saw Molinich and Horowitz both single and both cross home on a Dejean single for her 3rd RBI of the game.
The sixth inning found the bases loaded and no outs for Fairport on walks to Horowitz, Mackenzie Murphy and Dejean. Horowitz would race home on a pass ball, making the final 13-0.
In the second game vs. Thomas, consecutive first inning bunts, by Shannon Horan and Eva FitzSimmons, led to a run, on an RBI groundout by Jess Koneski. Next inning, a Maddy Horowitz blast to left center for a double, was followed up by a RBI single back through the box, by Rachel Dejean. The third inning saw another single run score, for Fairport. Sydney Bolan was hit in the arm by a pitch and would score on a hard grounder, by Jen Maysuch, which was just out of reach, of the second baseman’s glove.
Meanwhile pitcher, Sydney Bolan didn’t allow a Titans runner past first, in the first four innings, striking out 5 during that span. In the top of the fifth, Thomas had their leadoff hitter on third, with no outs. Bolan then struck out the next three batters, to keep the shutout intact.
Leading 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Fairport would blow the game open, with a 7 run inning. It all started with a HOME RUN, by Koneski, that took about 1 second, to clear the left field fence. One out later, Emily Molinich, Maddy Horowitz and Katie Campbell filled the bases, on two walks and a fielder’s choice. A Dejean single, scored Molinich, a double to right center by Horan, brought Horowitz and Campbell home. FitzSimmons ripped one over the shortstops head, scoring Dejean and she scored, on a Bolan hit.
Bolan seemed to get stronger as the game went on, recording 6 of her 11 strikeouts, in the last three innings. The Red Raiders would close out the scoring in the sixth, as Maysuch and Horowitz scored, with RBI’s going to Leah Erickson and Dejean, making the final 12-0.
Fairport @ Schroeder April 26; Fairport wins 9-5
The bang you heard in Webster about 4:30 p.m. on Friday, was leadoff hitter, Rachel Dejean, blasting a shot off the right center field fence for a triple. Leah Erickson followed that with a single up the middle and the Red raiders were on the board in a hurry. Alina Fowler reached on a fielder’s choice and she would score a few pitches later, on a wild pitch.
Schroeder would get one run back in the bottom of the first, stringing a couple of 2 out hits, but pitcher, Alina Fowler, escaped further damage getting the third out on a groundball with the bases loaded.
Alyssa Gentile led off the fourth with blast over the center fielders head for a double. She was caught trying to steal home but the Red Raiders still managed a run, on consecutive fly ball errors, hit to center field by Emily Molinich and Emma Lutzke.
The fifth was the big inning as Fairport used 3 hits, a walk and 2 more Schroeder errors to score five times. Eva FitzSimmons led off with a walk, and one batter later Dejean ripped one up the middle. Sydney Bolan popped one up the middle to score Dejean and Jen Maysuch would bloop a single to left center, to score Bolan, Gentile and just like that it was 8-2.
Schroeder did not give up without a fight, as three consecutive singles off of Bolan who had taken over the pitching duties in the third inning made it 8-4 after five.
Shannon Horan laid down a great bunt in the sixth, stole second, went to third on a pass ball and scored on a Dejean sacrifice fly. Two groundouts and a pop fly would end Schroeders sixth inning. However in the bottom of the seventh, 3 more singles made it 9-5. Schroeder had runners on first and second with 2 outs but a grounder to second baseman, FitzSimmons who flipped to Molinich at first, wrapped up the game. Even though Fairport was outhit 11-8 they made the most of their hits to run their record to 6-1.
Webster Thomas @ Fairport April 24, Fairport wins 14-5
While the Webster Thomas team waited on their bus in the FHS parking lot, thinking the game was going to get rained out, Fairport was on the field ready to play.
They proved they were ready by pounding out 22 hits and cruising to a 14-5 victory.
The 7 starters who played the whole game, went an incredible 18-29 (.621), all had at least 2 hits, scored 11 runs and 9 RBI. Leadoff hitter Shannon Horan led the way going 4-5, Jess Koneski was 3-4, Sydney Bolan 3-5, Maddy Horowitz 2-3, Rachel Dejean 2-3, Jen Maysuch 2-4, and Eva FitzSimmons 2-5
Fairport would put a crooked number on the scoreboard every inning, except the sixth. They scored 2 runs in each of the first four innings, 5 in the fifth and 1 in the sixth.
The table was set in the first by Horan and FitzSimmons. They both led off with bunt singles followed by a double by Koneski and a RBI single by Emma Lutzke. Second inning, Dejean hit a rope over the right fielders head for a triple and came in to score, on a error on the relay from the outfield.
In the third, Bolan ripped one up the middle that scored Horan and Katie Campbell. In the fourth Dejean was at it again, this time blasting a 2 RBI double to right center field. Then in the fifth inning Emily Molinich smacked a double that rolled under the center field fence costing her at least a triple. Leah Erickson drilled one up the middle that scored Dejean and Molinich. Horan completed the scoring in the inning, with a 2 run double to the right center field gap. The last Red Raider run scored in the sixth, on a hit up the middle by Maysuch, scoring Bolan from second.
Bolan threw heat the whole game and despite giving up back to back home runs in the 2nd inning, had great control all afternoon. She only gave up 1 walk and fanned 9, including a knee buckling change up, for a strikeout to end the game.
Penfield @ Fairport April 19 & 23 Fairport Wins 18-3
In a game that tookalmost 98 hours to complete, Fairport mercied Penfield 18-3. The game started last Friday, with only 2 innings being played, before the rain wiped out the rest of the game. So Tuesday, the game was continued, starting with the 3rd inning.
Sydney Bolan made quick work of Penfield in the first,, by striking out 2 and getting the third on a ground out. Walks to Bolan, Shannon Horan and Emily Molinich, would provide 3 runs in Fairport’s first at bat as all three would come around to score. Maddy Horowitz ripped a 2 run double to left and would score on a wild pitch to close out a six run first for the Red Raiders.
Bolan would get out of trouble in the top of the second by striking out Penfield’s leadoff hitter with the bases loaded to end the inning. Jess Koneski knocked in Leah Erickson and Jen Maysuch with a bullet to left center to make it 9-0 before a downpour stopped the game.
Fast forward to Tuesday, where the game was re started in the third inning and wait for it…… under sunny skies and temperatures in the high 50’s! Alina Fowler took over the pitching duties for Fairport and struck out five in her 3 innings in the circle. Alyssa Gentile drove a shot to the left center field gap to score Erickson and Maysuch and would come around to score herself, on a RBI single by Molinich, as Fairport upped its lead to 12-2 after 3.
Katie Campbell scored the Red Raiders lone run in the 4th with a single, 2 wild pitches and then crossing the plate on a Shaelyn Earley groundout.
Maysuch led off the fifth with a one bounce blast to the center field fence. As she was rounding third, the relay throw bounced over the Penfield shortstops glove and Maysuch continued on and safely slid into home. A few batters later Horowitz crushed her second 2 run double of the game scoring Gentile and Molinich. When Horowitz came in to score on a wild pitch, the 15 run mercy rule went into effect, ending the game.
Fairport JV hangs tough against opponents and weather April 19,20
Let’s see; rain…check, wind gusts at 35mph…check, snow flurries…check, okay, time to play softball. Those were the conditions this past weekend, as the Fairport JV team tried to get 3 games in, in less than 20 hours.
First up was the home opener vs. Penfield on Friday. Fairport was up 9-0 after 2 innings, but then the rain started coming down and wiped out the rest of the game.
Saturday the Red Raiders traveled to Victor to play the Geneva Panthers in a mini tournament. A heads up defensive play by sophomore center fielder, Rachel Dejean, helped Fairport get out of a small jam in the first. After an overthrow to 2nd on a stolen base, Dejean hustled in to back up the throw and fired the ball to 3rd, nailing the runner trying to take an extra base. The Red Raiders would score 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, as pitcher Alina Fowler drove a single to center, scoring Eva Fitzsimmons, who had reached base after being hit by a pitch. Fowler scored on a shot to left center by catcher Jess Koneski.
The game would stay 2-0 until the top of the fourth, when Geneva would tie the game on a two run home run. Fairport answered back in a big way in the bottom of the inning, as 7 runs would cross the plate. Koneski started things off with her 2nd hit of the game, followed by singles by Jen Maysuch, and Maddy Horowitz. RBI’s by Shannon Horan, Fitzsimmons and a 2 RBI single up the middle by Emma Lutzke, making it 7-0. Next up, was a blast to the center field fence for a triple by Fowler, that scored Lutzke.
Eighth grader, Sydney Bolan, took over pitching in the fifth for Fairport and promptly struck out the side. Four more Red Raiders would cross the plate in their next at bat. Horan poked a single through the left side of the infield, followed by a 2 RBI blast to center by Leah Erickson. Lutzke then knocked in her third run of the game with a single. Bolan would go on to strike out 7 in her 3 innings of work, and Fairport ran their record to 3-0 with a 13-6 victory.
In the second game of the day, Fairport would take on Lancaster Redskins. This was one of those games where things just didn’t go Fairport’s way in a 17-4 loss. The Red Raiders never gave up, as evidenced by a spectacular diving catch by right fielder Shannon Horan, and a great scoop by first baseman Emily Molinich of a throw in the dirt. Katie Campbell ran hard to steal a base in the third. Alyssa Gentile ripped a double over the center fielders head and would come around to score the Red Raiders first run in the fifth. Other hits in the game were by freshman Erickson and Lutzke.
Next up for the Red Raiders is a home game Wednesday, 4/24 vs. Webster Thomas, an away game at Webster Schroeder Friday, 4/26 and another mini tournament in Webster on Saturday, 4/27.
Brighton vs. Fairport (at Spencerport) April 4
After being cooped up for 3 weeks practicing indoors, while Mother Nature took an extra long nap, the
2013 Fairport JV softball season finally, began in Spencerport. In an interesting twist of fate, head coach Heather Natale’s first game was against Brighton, where she was the head coach last year.
Sydney Bolan got the start for Fairport and proceeded to strike out three in a row. In bottom of the first, Fairport scored 8 runs on only 3 hits. Rachel Dejean had the biggest hit of the inning, a 2 run double to right center. Bolan then struck out 2 more batters in the top of the second, while Fairport pushed six more runs across in the bottom of the inning, on 3 more hits. This time it was Jen Maysuch with the big hit of the inning, a 2 run double to the left center field gap.
Alina Fowler came in to pitch for the third inning and retired the side on 2 groundouts and a strikeout. She would go on to strike out a total of 3 batters, in her 3 innings of work. Fairport scored 1 more run in the fourth and 5 in the fifth, highlighted by a rocket down the third baseline for a home run by Alyssa Gentile. That would make the final score 20-0.

Once again Sydney Bolan got the start and was throwing smoke as she struck out the side on only 12 pitches.
Shannon Horan led off the second, with a double and Alyssa Gentile ended the inning with a 2 run double as Fairport upped its lead to 11-0. Bolan then whiffed 2 more in the bottom of the inning, to end her day with 5 strikeouts in her 2 innings of work.
The third inning saw RBI doubles by Jen Maysuch, Alina Fowler and Katie Campbell which led to 3 more runs. The fourth inning doubles parade, was led by Fowler, Campbell and Emma Lutzke making the score 19-0 after 4. The doubles machine was in action again in the fifth, as this time Eva FitzSimmons joined Fowler and Lutzke. Of the 21 hits Fairport had, 12 were doubles.
Fowler pitched the last three innings, allowing only 1 run in the 4th, on a two walks and a fielders choice.

Season Summary
The Fairport JV softball team went 17-1 for the 2012 season, falling short of a perfect record with a heartbreaking loss to rival Thomas in the last game of the year. Head coach Erin Moretter and Assistant Coach Terri Donovan struck the perfect balance of focus and fun to guide a talented group of softballers through a season they will fondly remember forever. The team demonstrated excellence in every aspect of the game and all 17 players contributed to the cause.
Led by sophomore Jess Mallow who finished with a sparkling 0.510 batting average, the Red Raider offense outscored the competition 248 to 34 runs. Freshman Maddy Horowitz turned in an impressive 0.720 on-base percentage, speedy sophomore Krista Kowiak led the team with 27 runs scored, and eighth grader Lauren Devito collected 15 stolen bases. The Raiders played long ball and small ball with equal proficiency. Eighth grader Emily McGrath and sophomore Courtney Leverett led the team by slugging over 0.800. Sam Vermuelen, Sam Price, Sarah Utz, Jess Mallow and Lauren Devito also added power to a line up that collected 62 extra base hits. While power hitting led to an average margin of victory of more than 12 runs, the brilliant bunting and base running of Jeanette Petti, Sarah Burzynski, and Sam Price helped the team manufacture runs when games were tight.
Defensively, the JV'ers committed only 14 errors on 435 balls in play for a 97% fielding percentage. The infield was anchored on the corners by Sarah Utz at third and Sam Vermuelen at 1st, with Ann Ritchie sharing time with Vermuelen. In the middle infield, Lauren Devito cleaned up at short stop while Jeanette Petti and Sarah Burzynski shared the responsibility for making spectacular plays at 2nd. Courtney Leverett was a wall behind the plate at catcher, allowing only 3 stolen bases all season. Outstanding outfield play from freshmen Shannon Horan, Rachel Dejean, Emily Molinich, and Megan Dutcher routinely robbed the opposition of hits and runs. Emily McGrath, Jess Mallow and Alina Fowler shared time in the circle compiling an impressive team ERA of 1.49. McGrath struck out 119 batters while issuing only 10 walks, and pitched three complete game no hitters including a perfect game vs. Penfield on May 14.
Fairport at Thomas May 18
As fate - or an evil schedule maker - would have it, Fairport was matched against their toughest opponent for the final game of the season. While the Raiders had won the prior two matches comfortably, Thomas displayed powerful bats, solid pitching, and good defense in both of those games. With an undefeated season on the line, the girl's prepared with an extra sense of purpose. At the same time, a confident Thomas team was well aware of Fairport's record and determined to play spoilers. The outcome? Well, in the words of Sarah Burzynski: "Now I know how Tom Brady felt after that Superbowl."
Lead off hitter Lauren Devito got the team off to a quick start by smacking the first pitch of the game for a double. She stole 3rd and scored on a throwing error. Thomas' hard throwing 8th grader Lauren Harding, buckled down and retired 3 of the next 4 batters, two by strike out. Thomas also got off to a fast start in the bottom of the 1st with a lead off home run by Thomas catcher Danni Laudisi and back-to-back doubles to make the score 2-1. Fairport pitcher Alina Fowler battled back and retired the next three batter's, 2 with strike outs. Behind in a game for the first time this season, Fairport came right back at Thomas. Jess Mallow led off the top of the 2nd with a single. Sarah Burzynski then bunted safe and Coach M. tried to move Mallow from 1st to 3rd on the bunt. While this strategy generated runs for Fairport in the earlier games, Thomas was ready this time and the first baseman fired to 3rd on the bunt and caught Mallow off the bag. Harding then struck out 2 more Fairport batters to end the 2nd. Fowler retired the Thomas batters in order in the bottom of the second and Harding returned the favor in the top of the 3rd. Thomas pushed one across in the bottom of the 3rd with the help of a single and a rare Fairport error. Sam Vermuelen reached on an error in the top of the 4th but was caught stealing 3rd base. After Thomas granted 2 walks, Fowler helped her cause with a single and Jeanette Petti scored a run with a sacrifice fly. Devito then lined a hard shot to the Thomas short stop to strand 2 runners with Fairport down 3-2. Thomas stranded two runners of their own in the bottom of the 4th. Courtney Leverett got a hit in the top of the 5th, but Harding didn't give up anything else and the score remained 3-2.
Thomas started the 5th with three straight hits including an RBI single from Harding that made the score 5-2. Fairport got out of the inning with the help of a dazzling play by Devito. With Mallow in for Fowler at pitcher, a line drive ricocheted off of Mallow's glove and into the air near 2nd base. A heads-up Devo ran from the short stop position to make a diving catch of the ball in front of the second base bag. Both sides cheered. In the top of the 6th, Ann Ritchie singled for Fairport, moved to 3rd on back-to-back walks and scored on a sacrifice fly by Devito. Up 5-3 in the bottom of the 6th, Thomas continued to hit to the outfield but an outstanding catch by Rachel Dejean at the fence prevented further scoring. Unfortunately, Fairport couldn't not make a run with their final at-bats of the season and Thomas prevailed. It was a teary-eyed meeting with the coaches after the game, but the girls had so much to be proud of with a 17-1 season. A series of great games between Fairport and Thomas has helped to create a exciting rivalry. On this day, Thomas was the better team. There will be more games.
Pitching: Fowler 4 innings, 10 hits, 5 runs (4 earned), 0 BB, 4 Ks; Mallow 2 innings, 3 hits, 0 runs, 0 BB, 1 K
Hitting: Devito 1 for 3 (double), 1 RBI
Schroeder at Fairport May 16
Only two more games against the respected teams from Webster stand between this talented JV team and an undefeated season. First up is Schroeder - a team with an excellent 8th grade pitcher in Adriana Dilal and several dangerous bats in the line-up. Emily McGrath took the circle for Fairport and would strike out 14 Warriors in route to a 7-2 victory. A couple more sparkling plays at 2nd base, this time from Jeanette Petti, also helped limit Webster's base runners. Coach Moretter manufactured runs on the bases and the Raiders added their usual collection of big hits to give McGrath all the run support she would need.
Leadoff batter Lauren Devito reached on a hit-by-pitch in the bottom of the 1st inning, stole two bases, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Emily McGrath that was dropped by the center fielder. Pinch runner Krista Kowiak stole bases to reach 3rd and scored on a passed ball to put Fairport up 2-0. Webster earned a run on 2 hits in the top of the 2nd inning. In the bottom of the second, Jess Mallow reached on an error and Sam Price reached on a single. With two excellent bunters coming to the plate and no outs, Coach Moretter took advantage. The runners moved to 2nd and 3rd on steals and then back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Sarah Burzynski and Jeanette Petti scored both runners to make the score 4-1. Devito then crushed the ball into left for a triple and would score on a error by the short stop on a hard hit ball by McGrath. Up 5-1, McGrath would strike out 3 of 4 batters in the top of the third to turn the offense right back over to the Raiders. Courtney Leverett led off in the bottom of the 3rd and launched a ball deep into the left field clouds. Later that day, the ball landed and Leverett had a stand up triple. Pinch runner Ann Ritchie ran the bases brilliantly on a dropped 3rd strike, breaking for home on the throw to 1st and beating the throw back home by a step. Petti put on a show in the 5th inning ranging far to her right on two great backhanded plays including a diving catch of a low line drive near the 2nd base bag. McGrath led off the bottom of the 5th with a triple and scored on a Sarah Utz single to make the score 7-2. Schroeder scored on back-to-back doubles in the top of the 6th including a shot by Dilal that threatened to leave the yard. Petti and Devito stroked singles in the bottom of the 6th but would be stranded on the bases. In the top of the 7th, McGrath ended the game and her JV season with her patented change up that floated in for a called third strike.
Pitching: McGrath 7 innings, 14Ks, 6 hits, 1 BB, 2 runs (1 earned)
Hitting: Devito 2 for 3 (triple); Leverett 1 for 3 (triple); McGrath 1 for 3 (triple), 1 RBI;
Fairport at Brockport May 15
As if Brockport wasn't far enough away, the boys Freshman baseball team had bus problems and the girls needed to take a detour to drop the boys off at Gates-Chili. After more than an hour on the bus, the JV'ers arrived at a nice field in Brockport complete with all the amenities: dugouts, a scoreboard, and visiting bleachers. Sarah Burzynski had a big day at the plate with 4 RBI and Fairport scored another big win in their juggernaut season winning 17-1.
Sam Vermuelen got the offense started with a single as the lead off hitter in the top of the 2nd. Sam Price reached on an error and Sarah Burzynski laid down a sac bunt to score Vermuelen. Price then scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0. Brockport went down 1, 2, 3 in the bottom of the 2nd with playmaker Burzynski making an excellent running catch in left field to rob Brockport of a hit. McGrath led off in the top of the 3rd with a single and scored three batters later when Vermuelen smacked her second hit of the game. Price reached with an infield hit and then Burzynski hit a hard shot right over the 3rd base bag for 2 RBI. Burzynski would score on a base hit by Emily Molinich to give Fairport a 6-0 lead. Lauren Devito led off in the 4th inning with a base hit and McGrath reached on an error. A walk to Sarah Utz loaded the bases. An error and productive out scored 2 runs ahead of a RBI single by Burzynski that made the score 9-0. Jess Mallow made a great play at short stop to end the 4th inning and then hit a single and scored on a passed ball in the top of the 5th to give the Raiders a 10 run lead. Alina Fowler and Krista Kowiak replaced the battery of McGrath and Leverett in the bottom of the 4th and both would add to Fairport's offense in the top of the 5th. Fowler crushed a double to left and Kowiak singled ahead of a 9 pitch battle at the plate by Ann Ritchie. Ritchie won the battle with a 2 RBI double to left center. Brockport scored in the bottom of the 5th with the help of an error, a walk and 2 hits. Still short of a 15 run lead, Fairport entered the 5th inning and added 4 more runs on hits by Shannon Horan, Mallow, Fowler, Megan Dutcher, and Maddie Horowitz. The defense held with the help of 2 nice plays by Petti at 2nd base and game ended on the run rule.
Pitching: McGrath 3 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 BB, 6 Ks; Fowler 3 innings, 2 hits, 1 run (unearned), 1 BB, 1 K
Hitting: Burzynski 2 for 2, 4 RBI; Mallow 2 for 2 (double), 2 RBI; Fowler 2 for 2 (double), 1 RBI; Vermuelen 2 for 3, 2 RBI; Ritchie 1 for 2 (double), 2 RBI; Devito 1 for 3, 2 RBI;
Fairport at Penfield May 14
The still undefeated JV'ers started the final week of their season with a visit to Penfield. After 2 near misses this season, Emily McGrath finally netted a perfect game in a mercy-shortened 5 inning affair. The perfect game was made possible by a gravity defying catch by Sarah Burzynski in the final inning that has already grown into legend in the annals of Fairport JV softball. The Fairport offense was powered by perfect days at the plate: Shannon Horan was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI, Lauren Devito was 4 for 4 with a double, Maddie Horowitz was 2 for 2, and Courtney Leverett was 5 for 5 with two doubles, a triple and 4 RBI. This was a game to remember.
Lead off hitter Devito set the tone for the offense in the top of the 1st with a double. The bases were loaded with a hit-by-pitch and a walk in front of Leverett and Vermuelen who both stroked singles to make the score 3-0. Horan drove a 2 RBI single and Jeanett Petti hit a RBI single to end the scoring for the inning at 6 runs. McGrath began her perfect day by striking out the top of the Penfield order on 10 pitches. In the 2nd inning, Leverett and Vermuelen smacked back-to-back bombs for a double and a triple while Horan and Devito added another single each to help Fairport to a 10-0 lead. The next three Penfield batters went down on 8 pitches in the bottom of the 2nd with help from a line drive snag by Petti at second base and a pop up fielded by Vermuelen at 1st. The top of the 3rd saw Leverett reach with a double while Ann Ritchie and Horan hit singles to give the Raiders a 12-0 lead. McGrath took care of the next three Penfield batters on her own with strike outs. The last of these batters battled hard by fouling off several pitches with 2 strikes before watching a change-up float in for a called third strike. In the top of the 4th Megan Dutcher reached with a single before McGrath and Leverett went back-to-back with towering triples to make the score 15-0. Fairport batted around in the inning allowing Leverett to add a single to her total for the day, while Maddie Horowitz hit two singles, Alina Fowler added a single and Emily Molinich smashed a double. This was the last scoring for anybody on the day with Fairport up 20-0. Nine more pitches got McGrath through the 4th inning with the help of a play from Burzyinski on a ground ball to second. "The Catch" by Burzynski came in the bottom of the 5th. After McGrath struck out the 1st batter for her 10th K of the day, Penfield had their best chance to break up the perfect game with a looping hit that look sure to fall between the infielders and outfielders on the right side of the field. Keeping her eyes on the ball the whole time, Burzynski traveled backwards and sideways but was still out of reach of the ball as it was about to land. Burzynski leaped backwards and barely caught the ball with the only the tip of her glove. As remarkable as the catch was, the fact that Burzynski held on to the ball as she landed hard on the ground with her glove still outstretched looked downright miraculous. With no runners on base to worry about, the entire team came to second to congratulate Burzynski on one of the most athletic looking plays they had ever seen. Even the Penfield coaches were clapping. With 1 more out to go for the perfect game, McGrath closed it out appropriately: with a 4 pitch strike out of the 15th Penfield batter.
Pitching: McGrath 5 innings, 11Ks, 0 BB, 0 runs
Hitting: Leverett 5 for 5 (2 doubles, triple), 4 RBI; Devito 4 for 4 (double), RBI; Horan 3 for 3, 3 RBI; Horowitz 2 for 2, RBI; Ritchie 2 for 3; Vermuelen 2 for 3 (triple), 3 RBI; McGrath 1 for 3 (triple), RBI; Burzynski 1 for 2 (double); Molinich 1 for 2 (double), RBI.
Rush-Henrietta at Fairport May 11
RH visited Fairport for a Saturday morning ball game. In the first meeting, the Royal Comets had a hard time putting the ball into play as 17 of their 22 batters struck out. On this day, the RH girls came ready to hit and only 5 went down on strikes. Still Fairport rolled to another big win 17-2 because the defense was stingy (only 1 error) and the offense was unrelenting.
Sam Vermuelen started the scoring for Fairport in the bottom of the first inning behind three RH walks that loaded the bases. Vermuelen blasted a shot over the center fielder for a 3 RBI triple. In the second inning Emily McGrath stroked a single and Jenette Petti laid down a perfect bunt to reach base with a hit. Errors and walks gave Fairport several free rides and the inning ended with Fairport up 10-0. The top of the 3rd saw a great catch by Ann Ritchie in center field to prevent an extra base hit for RH. In the bottom of the inning Emily McGrath hit a triple and scored on a ground out by Sarah Utz. In the bottom of the 4th Sam Price hit her 2nd home run of the season, taking advantage of her speed to get around the bases before the ball could be relayed from deep left field. RH loaded the bases with no outs in the 5th with a well-placed slap hit, a rare Fairport error, and a walk. Fairport would record two quick outs ahead of a base hit that would score RH's two runs. Courtney Leveret smashed a RBI double in the bottom of the 5th and Emily Molinich followed with a hard drive right past the pitcher. A series of RH miscues put runners on the bases and allowed them to score until the mercy rule came into effect before the 5th inning was over.
Pitching: McGrath 5 innings, 3 hits, 2 runs (unearned), 2 BB, 5 Ks
Hitting: McGrath 2 for 2 (triple), 2 RBI; Petti 2 for 3; Price 1 for 2 (homerun), 2 RBI; Vermuelen 1 for 3 (triple), 3 RBI; Leverett 1 for 3 (double), 1 RBI
Irondequoit at Fairport May 10
Irondequoit visited Fairport today and the outcome was similar to the first meeting: Fairport wins 23-1. The offensive highlight was a 2 RBI triple on a blast by Krista Kowiak. Defensively Alina Fowler and Emily McGrath combined for a 2 hitter. Fairport put up 4 runs in the 1st with the help from singles by Sarah Burzynski and Shannon Horan. Burzynski also doubled in the second and Maddie Horowitz and Jess Mallow both singled in route to an 11-0 score at the bottom of 2. Irondequoit's only run came from a walk that would score on a single in the top of the 3rd. Horan stroked another single ahead of a massive triple by Kowiak. McGrath and Price doubled in the 4th while Utz and Vermulien singled. Several other balls were put into play and with the help of some errors and walks, the score was quickly 23-1. A couple of amazing stats on this game - 15 of the 16 players on the day's roster scored (Leverett did not dress). Alina Fowler and Emily McGrath faced 19 total batters and threw first pitch strikes to 18 of them.
Pitching: Fowler 3 innings, 2 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB 3 K; McGrath 2 innings, 0 hits, 0 runs, 1 BB, 3 K
Hitting: Kowiak 1 for 1 (triple), 3 RBI; McGrath 1 for 2 (double); Price 1 for 1 (double), RBI; Burzynski 2 for 4 (double), 1 RBI;
Canadaigua at Fairport May 9
Canadaigua visited Fairport for a double header featuring two 5 inning games. Candadaigua's pitchers and defense limited the JV'ers to their two lowest run totals so far this season. The undefeated season almost slipped away in Game 1 but the Raiders prevailed. Emily McGrath pitched her 2nd oh-so-near perfect game of the season in Game 2 to lead the Raiders to their 12th win and 5th shut-out of the season.
Game 1, Fairport 5, Canadaigua 4. Fairport played as the home team for game 1 with Jess Mallow starting in the circle. Canadaigua went down 1-2-3 in the first inning with consecutive plays from Sarah Utz at 3rd, Lauren 'Devo' Devito at short, and Jeanette Petti at second - all throwing to Sam Vermuelen at first for the outs. Leading off in the bottom of the inning, Devo smashed a ball into deep left field for a triple and scored when Sam Price stroked a single. Courtney Leverett hit her third triple in 4 at bats to score Price. Pinch running for Leverett, Krista Kowiak stole home on a dropped third strike to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead. In the 2nd inning, Fairport's defense held again and the girls added 2 runs when a throwing error allowed Ann Ritchie and Shannon Horan to score after both reached with base hits. The next scoring was by the Braves in the 4th inning following a series of walks and an error by Fairport. Fairport threatened in the 4th when Alina Fowler moved into scoring position with 1 out, but Canadaigua's defense was stingy. The left fielder caught a fly ball by Shannon Horan for the 2nd out and then threw to third for the 3rd out as Fowler tried to advance with a tag-up. Fowler entered the circle in the top of the 5th to close out the game. After two walks and a strike out, the Braves bashed a hit into right field. The runners held on 1st and 2nd anticipating the ball might be caught, but it fell in. Right fielder Horan fielded the ball and gunned the ball to Sarah Utz at 3rd to force the lead runner and record the 2nd out. Fairport was up 5-1 with 2 out and runners on 1st and 2nd. The next batter for Canadaigua blasted a shot to center to knock in 2 runs and then scored herself on another hit to make the score 5 to 4 Fairport. For the first time this season, Fairport found themselves in a close game in the late innings. Fortunately, the next batter grounded out to Fowler to end Canadaigua's rally.
Pitching: Mallow 3.67 innings, 2 hits, 1 run, 4 BB, 3 K; Fowler 1.33 innings, 2 hits, 3 runs, 2 BB, 1K
Hitting: Leverett 1 for 2 (triple), 1 RBI; Devito 1 for 2 (triple)
Game 2, Fairport 5, Canadaigua 0.
Fairport played as the visiting team for game 2. For the second time this season Emily McGrath was one blemish away from a perfect game in route to a no hitter (see Fairport at Rush, April 18). And that wasn't the only de-ja-vu in Game 2. Rachel Dejean again found herself rounding the bases after an apparent homerun that would instead go into the books as an out (see Fairport at Irondequoit, April 25).
McGrath struck out 9 of the 16 batters she faced and made four more put outs fielding a bunt, a line drive, a pop up, and ground ball to the pitcher. Jess Mallow covered two ground balls at short stop and Maddie Horowitz made an unassisted out playing 1st base. Canadaigua's only base runner came when a 3rd strike was dropped on a difficult change up. The play would have been a routine out except that the batter inadvertently dropped the bat on the ball and knocked it far from catcher Cortney Leverett. Batter interference?!? Perfect game lost to a bad call, or just to bad luck? Someone check the rulebook.
Fairport's offense took advantage of a couple of Canadaigua miscues in the 1st inning to get on the scoreboard. After Leverett was hit by a pitch and Jess Mallow reached on an error, Maddie Horowitz drove a ground ball into the outfield to score both of them. That was the last scoring the Raiders would see until the 5th. Rachael Dejean tried to take matters into her own hands in the 2nd with a deep fly ball that hit the top of the center field fence. As she rounded third and headed for home, the ball was coming in from the outfield for a close play at the plate. The catcher clearly dropped the ball on the tag but the umpire didn't see it that way and Dejean was robbed of a home run for the second time this season. No question here: bad call. Fairport entered the 5th inning only up 2-0 and would again capitalize on Canadaigua mistakes. Emily Molinich reached on an error and the next two Fairport batters walked to load the bases. Leverett hit a sacrifice fly, and Sam Price - pinch running for Molinich - scored from third on the tag-up. Slugger Jess Mallow smashed a timely double that would score 2 more to give Fairport a 5-0 lead. The insurance runs were nice but not needed, as McGrath struck out 2 in the bottom of the 5th and Mallow threw the 3rd batter out from short to end the game.
Pitching: McGrath 5 innings, 0 hits, 9Ks, 0 walks, 0 runs
Hitting: Mallow 2 for 3 (double), 2 RBI; Dejean 1 for 2 (triple)
Fairport at Victor May 8
The rain began falling on the bus ride to Victor and it would only get worse as the game went on. The conditions made for some sloppy play, but the outcome was familiar. Courtney Leverett powered two triples and Alina Fowler held serve in the circle as Fairport left Victor victorious: 19-3.
Sam Price walked in the 1st inning and moved around the bases to score after several Victor throwing errors. Courtney Leverett struck early with a right field triple that scored Price. Leverett also scored on an errant throw to put Fairport up 2-0. Victor struck back in the bottom with a hit that turned into a score on passed balls. The top of 2nd began with several walks and hit by by Maddie Horowitz. With bases loaded, Victor walked in a run and Sam Price pounded a 2 run double. After a Lauren Devito walk, Leverett hit her second triple collecting a couple RBI. Leverett also scored on a passed ball. The rain was really coming down hard at this point. Victor tried to keep pace in the bottom of the 2nd with 2 hits and a sacrifice bunt to produce 2 more and make the score 9-3. A heads up play by Sarah Utz at 3rd base helped limit the damage. With a runner going 1st to 3rd on a base hit, Utz reapplied the tag after the runner reached safely and caught the runner off bag for the out. In the top of the 3rd inning Devo smacked a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Price, and scored on a passed ball. In the bottom of the 3rd, Victor's lead off hitter stroked a shot to deep right field but fell down at first because of the decaying field conditions. The next batter hit a ground ball to Sarah Burzynski at 2nd base who tagged the runner and threw to first for a double play. Fowler struck out the next batter to end the inning. An Emily Molinich single and more Victor walks and errors scored another run for Fairport in the top of the 4th. The bottom 4th saw ground balls go to third, short-stop, and 2nd base and all were converted to outs. Despite the miserable conditions, Fowler kept the pressure on the Victor batters by throwing strikes and the defense played solid behind her.
With Fairport up comfortably 12-3 in the 5th, talk began to turn to calling the game, but the Victor coach protested. The Varsity, Fairport baseball, and the Rochester Red Wings all ended their games early because of the rain, but this JV softball game was going the distance. So the unfortunate but understandable goal for Fairport was to get up on Victor by 15 runs as soon as possible to minimize the risk of injury. Fairport accomplished this by the 6th inning with Megan Dutcher and Leverett adding another hit each and Krista Kowiak adding a 2 run double. Fowler and the unbeatable Fairport defense retired 6 of 7 batters to get the job done.
Pitching: Fowler 6 innings, 5 hits, 4 BB, 3 K, 3 runs
Hitting: Leverett, 3 for 5 (2 triples), 3 RBI; Kowiak 1 for 2 (double), 2 RBI; Devito 1 for 4 (double)
Mid-season Report
At the mid-point of the 2012 season, Coach Moretter's team has established themselves as the JV team to beat in Section V softball. The team is 9-0 and were the winners of their group in the Webster JV tournament. The Raiders have never trailed in their 9 games and have outscored their opponents by a whopping 132-19. The team is batting a collective 0.407 with seven players hitting over 0.400 (Jess Mallow, Emily McGrath, Sam Price, Emily Molinich, Lauren Devito, Sam Vermuelen and Courtney Leverett). The team has made only 8 errors in 238 balls in play for a 97% fielding percentage. There is plenty of power in the line-up as the girls have bashed 32 extra base hits including 4 home runs and 10 triples. Sophomore Jess Mallow leads the team with a remarkable 0.667 batting average. Fellow sophomore sluggers Sam Vermuelen (17 RBI), Courtney Leverett (15 RBI) and Sarah Utz (18 runs scored) have also pounded opposing pitchers. Eighth grader and lead off hitter Lauren Devito leads the team with 9 stolen bases and fellow eighth grade pitcher Emily McGrath has recorded 71 strikeouts in 41 innings, while issuing only 6 walks, and earning an ERA of 0.85.
Mercy at Fairport May 3
Like yesterday's game vs. Thomas, the JV'ers had beautiful weather for this game against Mercy. With a final score of 21-6, there was little drama and too many scoring plays to list in detail. The power trio of Courtney Leverett, Sam Vermuelen, and Jess Mallow knocked in 15 of Fairport's 21 runs. Leverett collected 7 RBI on 2 doubles. Vermuelen collected 5 RBI on 3 for 3 hitting and was a homerun short of going for the cycle. Mallow went 2 for 4, crushed a double and collected 3 RBI. Sam Price displayed her talents in the bottom of the second with a perfect bunt and blazing speed to first base. The defensive highlight of the day was a shoe string catch in center field by Rachel Dejean.
Pitching: Fowler 4 innings, 3 Ks, 3 hits, 2 BB, 2 ER; Mallow 1 inning, 0 Ks, 1 hit, 2 BB, 2 ER
Hitting: Leverett, 2 for 4 (2 doubles), 7 RBI; Vermuelen 3 for 3 (double, triple), 5 RBI; Mallow 2 for 5 (double), 3 RBI; Horan 2 for 2
Thomas at Fairport May 2
For the third straight game, Fairport lined up against a team from Webster. This game was a rematch of Saturday's game with Thomas. One lesson from Saturday's game was evident again today: Thomas can hit. In fact Thomas out hit Fairport 9 hits to 8, but Fairport still won comfortably 10-4. Fairport maintained control by taking every opportunity to move on the base paths and score, issuing no walks, and making some great plays in the field.
A walk by Lauren 'Devo' Devito led to the first score for Fairport in the bottom of the first inning. Devo stole 2nd, took third on a ground out, and scored on an error. Courtney Leverett then stroked a single and Jess Mallow crushed a 2 run double to make the score 3-0. Thomas also issued a walk to start the second inning - this time to Jeanette Petti. Sam Price executed a perfect sacrifice bunt and Coach M. had Petti run 1st to 3rd on the play. Devo earned her second walk of the game and carried on to 2nd base on the continuation. Because the only force play was at 1st, Emily McGrath was able to earn an infield hit on a ground ball to third base and the bases were loaded with slugger Sarah Utz at the plate. Utz delivered a 2 run single and Leverett then added a RBI single to put Fairport up 7-0 at the end of 2. Utz and Sam Vermulen took care of the defense in the top of the 3rd with two nice plays going from 3rd to 1st. The top of the 4th inning featured a great play by Devo at short stop. Devo ran a mile behind 3rd base to make a running catch and rob a Thomas hitter of a blooper single. In the bottom of the 4th inning Fairport again capitalized on walks when an RBI single by Leverett made the score 8-0.
Thomas seemed to have Fairport's McGrath figured out in the 5th as they began the inning by bashing 4 straight shots to the outfield. Only one of the balls was caught on a great running catch by Shanon Horan in left field and so the bases were loaded with 1 out. The next two batters gave Fairport a chance out of the inning with no damage with a strike out and a ground ball back to the pitcher. The force play at home was bobbled however leading to a run for Thomas on an error. Thomas then stroked a 2 run single for their 4th hit of the inning and cut the Raider lead to 8-3. Fairport got two of the runs back in the 5th when Sarah Burzynski beat out a play at first and then scored on a left field blast from Devo that went for a triple. Devo scored on a ground out by McGrath to make the score 10-3.
Coach M. tried to change gears on Thomas by putting Alina Fowler in at pitcher for the final two frames. Fowler threw hard and threw strikes but Thomas continued their assault on Fairport's defense. Great plays in the outfield by Emily Molinich and Megan Dutcher contained Thomas in the 6th. In the final inning, Ann Ritchie made a nice play at 1st on a difficult pop up behind 1st base and Utz gunned out a runner at home with bases loaded. Thomas earned a run before Fowler ended the game with a strike out.
Pitching: McGrath 5 innings, 6 hits, 0 BB, 3 runs (unearned), 7K; Fowler 2 innings, 3 hits, 0 BB, 2Ks, 1 ER
Hitting: Leverettt 3 for 4, 2 RBI; Mallow 1 for 2 (double), 2 RBI; Devito 1 for 3 (triple), 2 RBI; Utz 1 for 2, 2 RBI.
Fairport at Schroeder April 30
Fairport visited Webster Schroeder in an anticipated match-up between two unbeaten teams that had not only been winning games, but winning by big margins. The hard throwing Dilal was in the circle for Schroeder, but Fairport was still able to display their offensive power while shutting out the Warriors, 10-0.
Fairport put up 2 quick runs in the 2nd when Lauren 'Devo' Devito crushed a line drive through the right side and scored on a base hit by Sarah Utz. Utz scored when Courtney Leverett also launched a double in the inning. Schoeder's lead off batter successfully slapped her way onto first but Schroeder would not see another base runner until the 5th inning. Pitcher Emily McGrath controlled the respected Warrior bats, retiring 7 of the first 9 by strike out. McGrath helped her own cause by hitting triples in the 3rd and 5th innings. Both triples resulted in runs and one fell just short of the right field fence. The Warriors gifted Fairport a run in the 6th with a walk and a couple of errors. In the 7th Utz led off with a triple and Sam Vermuelen hit one later for 2 RBI. Devo also chipped in a 2 RBI single to end the Fairport scoring at 10.
Pitching: McGrath 7 innings, 13Ks, 2 BB, 3 hits, 0 ER
Hitting: McGrath 2 for 4 (2 triples), 1 RBI; Utz 2 for 4 (triple), 3 RBI; Devito 2 for 4, 1 RBI; Vermuelen 1 for 4 (triple), 2 RBI; Leverett 1 for 3 (double), 1 RBI
Webster Tournament April 28
In the annual Webster JV tournament, Webster Thomas, Fairport, Pittsford Sutherland and Mercy were placed in the same group. Fairport drew Mercy for Game 1 with the winner to face the Sutherland vs. Thomas winner. Fairport beat Mercy 16-1 and Thomas 9-2 to win the group. Fairport had a little offense to spare. Coach M was pleased with the outcome, but not so pleased with the Raiders stranding 11 on base vs. Mercy and 13 on base vs. Thomas.
Fairport vs. Mercy–
Fairport played as the home team vs. Mercy. Fairport opened the scoring in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Cortney Loverett led off with a blast over the right fielder for a double. Sarah Burzynski then hustled to first base to beat out a ball that was mishandled at 2nd. Krista Kowiak, pinch running for Leverett, scored on the Burzynski hustle play. Burzynski later scored herself on a base hit from Shanan Horan to make the score 2-0. Berzinsky slid head first to score, reaching out to touch the corner of home plate while deftly avoiding a tag. Pitcher Emily McGrath had retired 6 of the first 7 Mercy batters by strike out but then issued a walk in the 3rd that would score on a triple by Mercy's Katie Sylvester. Fairport added two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd with help from hits by Sarah Utz and Jess Mallow, an error, and a couple of walks.
Fairport broke the game open in the 4th. Leading off, McGrath beat out a ground ball to third base to record an infield hit and Sara Utz and Leverett followed with singles. Both Sam Vermuelen and Lauren Devito then hit 2 RBI singles before the inning ended with Fairport up 10-1. Emily Molinich collected an RBI single for the only scoring in the 5th. McGrath poked an RBI single in the 6th while Utz crushed a 2 RBI double and Leverett added a RBI triple. The game was called with Fairport up by 15 runs, 16-1.
Pitching: McGrath 6 innings, 10Ks, 1 BB, 2 hits, 1 ER
Hitting: Leverett, 3 for 5 (double, triple), 1 RBI; McGrath 3 for 5, 1 RBI; Utz 2 for 5 (double), 2 RBI; Devito 1 for 3, 3 RBI; Vermeulen 1 for 3, 3 RBI.
Fairport vs. Thomas –
Fairport played as the visiting team vs. Thomas. Two batters were all Fairport needed to get on the scoreboard. Lauren 'Devo' Devito led off with a deep shot over the center-fielder for a double, took 3rd on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Shanon Horan. In the second inning, Jess Mallow recorded the first of her 5 hits with a right field poke. Runners reached on walks and errors to load the bases for Devo who delivered a textbook RBI single with 2 strikes by pushing an outside pitch to right field. Devo recorded her 3rd hit in the top of the 4th with another shot to center field and scored on a deep shot from McGrath that landed just short of the center field fence.
Fairport flashed the leather in the middle innings. The second inning saw Devo charging hard to pick up a slow roller and throwing on the run to a stretched out Sarah Utz at first to just beat a speedy Thomas player. In the third inning Jeanette Petti recorded all three outs at second base including a double play where she snagged a line shot up the middle and quickly gunned to first to catch the runner off the bag. In the bottom of the 4th, with the Raider's up only 3-0, it looked like Fairport would pay the price for stranding 7 runners on bases to that point in the game. Thomas had the bases loaded with 2 outs when another base hit was clobbered into left field. The runner from 3rd scored easily but the runner from second was gunned down by Horan who fielded the ball in left and threw a perfect one bounce throw to catcher Courtney Leverett. Leverett went up the baseline to make the catch right in front of the runner. Leverett absorbed a hard collision with the charging runner, but clearly made the tag and hung on to the ball with two hands. Wow. This Fairport club is very good.
The JV'ers put some daylight between themselves and Thomas before the game ended. In the 5th, Mallow reached on a single and scored on another RBI shot from Devo to make the score 4-1. Mallow added an RBI single of her own in the 6th behind hits from Utz and Leverett. Vermeulen then singled to knock in two to make the score 7-1. Thomas added a run in the bottom of the 6th with a pair of hits including a monster double from slugger Delaney St. George. Thomas granted Fairport a few gifts in the 7th with a walk, hit batter, and error. A sacrifice fly from Leverett and another RBI single from Mallow ended the scoring for the day 9-2.
Pitching: Fowler 3.67 innings, 2 hits, 0 ER, 3 BB, 2 Ks; McGrath 3.33 innings, 3 hits, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 Ks
Hitting: Mallow 5 for 5, 2 RBI; Devito, 4 for 5 (double), 2 RBI; Vermuelen 1 for 1, 2 RBI; McGrath 1 for 4 (double), 1 RBI
Penfield at Fairport April 27
With a game time temperature of 45F and winds gusting over 20 MPH, the windchill made the temperature for Penfield's trip to Fairport feel more like the mid-30s. For the 3rd time in 4 games, the JV'ers started the scoring with a homerun, this time a 2 run blast from Emily McGrath. The temperatures fell as the game went on but the bats stayed hot and Fairport won another game by double digits, 13-0.
The cold temperatures seem to keep Fairport and Penfield on ice for the first two innings. Penfield got a runner in scoring position in the third, but the threat was ended on a 6-3 Devito/Vermuelen combo to end the inning. In the bottom of the inning Shannon Horan smacked a single to left-center just ahead of McGrath's bomb over the right field fence. With that spark, the Fairport bats came alive as Sarah Utz and Jess Mallow reached with singles and Vermuelen crushed a 2 run double to right field to make the score 4-0. In the bottom of the 4th, Devito smacked a single, stole all the bases including home on a passed ball. Walks and errors put base runners on in front of Courtney Leverett who hit a 2 run single to make the score 8-0. The 5th inning featured a double play that helped preserve the shut-out. After a walk, a bunt, a strike out, and a wild pitch, Penfield had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Devito fielded a ball at short, looked the runner back on third, and threw a strike to Vermeulen at 1st to retire the batter. With the runner on third frozen, the runner on second was caught off the bases and tried to retreat to 2nd. Vermeulen fired to Alina Fowler at 2nd for a tag out. The runner at 3rd broke for home but the tag-out happened just before she scored and so the shut-out was preserved. In bottom of the 5th, Sam Price smacked a 2 RBI single behind a hit by Fowler and a walk to make the score 10-0. In the 6th Maddie Horowitz stroked a single and Megan Dutcher smacked a ball past the center fielder for a double. Fowler then delivered a 2 RBI shot and Devito reached on an error to score Fowler and end the scoring at 13. Fowler came in relief for McGrath in the 7th and retired the side with three strikeouts to end the game and let everyone come in from the cold.
Pitching: McGrath 6 innings, 10 Ks, 1 BB, 2 hits, 0 ER; Fowler 1 inning, 3 Ks, 1 hit, 1 BB, 0 ER.
Hitting: McGrath 2 for 3 (homerun), 2 RBI; Vermuelen 2 for 4 (double), 2 RBI; Fowler 2 for 2, 2 RBI; Dutcher 1 for 2 (double); Leverett 1 for 3, 2 RBI; Mallow 2 for 3, 1 RBI; Price 1 for 2, 2 RBI
Fairport at Irondeqouit April 25
JV traveled to the northcoast and continued their winning ways. Fairport's hitters pounded the ball while Alina Fowler and Jess Mallow combined to pitch a run-rule-shortened no hitter. Fairport rolled 23-0 in 5 innings.
Lead off hitter Sam Price got the offense started with a lead off double in the first inning as Sarah Utz, Mallow and Fowler all contributed singles. The score at the end of 1 was 7-0. Fowler retired the side in three straight with two strike outs and help from a '6-3' with Mallow at short throwing to Sam Vermuelen at 1st. Price also started the scoring in the 2nd inning with a 2 RBI single behind a single from Fowler and a couple of walks that loaded the bases. Jess Mallow continued her streak of extra base hits with a double in the inning and scored immediately on a double by Vermuelen. The inning finally ended with Fairport up by 15. In the 3rd inning Emily McGrath contributed a 2 RBI single to make the score 17-0 and later fielded a ground ball at 3rd to help Fowler record her third straight 1,2,3 inning. Mallow, Ritchie and Maddie Horowitz all stroked singles in the 4th and scored on a would-be Grand Slam by Rachel Dejean. Dejean sent the ball into orbit but missed a base during in her home-run trot and got called out. In the 5th and final inning Emily Molinich and McGrath reached on singles and then scored on a single by Mallow and ground out by Lauren Devito.
Hitting: Mallow 4-5 (double) 3 RBI; Price 2-2 (double), 2 RBI; Ritchie 2-2, 1 RBI; Fowler 2-5, 1 RBI; McGrath 2-2, 2 RBI; DeJean ~1-1 (~ Grand Slam), 3 RBI; Vermuelen 1-2 (Double), 1 RBI.
Pitching: Fowler 3 Innings, 4 Ks, 0 BB, 0 hits, 0 runs; Mallow 2 innings, 1 K, 1 BB, 0 runs.
Victor at Fairport April 20
Victor visited Fairport on a perfect spring day. While the bats were quiet down on the Varsity field in their 1-0 extra inning victory, the balls were flying up on the hill. The sophomore bats did most of the damage as Fairport rolled to another win by a big margin 16-3.
Fairport's Emily McGrath began the game by striking out the top of Victor's order to retire the side. In the second inning the next three batters for Victor were thrown out at first after trying to bunt on. For the second game in a row, Jess Mallow opened the scoring for Fairport with a home run in the 2nd inning. The hits kept coming as Sara Utz and Cortney Leverett both slammed triples while Lauren Devito, McGrath, Sam Vermuelen, and Mallow (again) added singles to put Fairport up 8-0. In the top of the 3rd, Victor's Jen Newel squared up a McGrath change-up for a triple and then scored on a bunt. Victor picked up another run in the 4th inning with a pair of hits. Fairport hit for the cycle in the 5th with a single by Mallow, a double from Shannon Horan, Utz's second triple, and a 2 run home run by Sam Price! In the 6th inning, solid base running, a RBI single from Megan Dutcher, and another double from Horan made the score 16-2. Victor's Newel smacked an RBI double in the 7th to give Victor its 3rd run of the game.
Pitching: McGrath 7 innings, 12Ks, 1 BB, 7 hits, 3 ER.
Hitting: Mallow 3 for 3 (HR), 2 RBI; Utz 2 for 4 (2 triples), 3 RBI; Horan 2 for 2, (2 doubles), 1 RBI; Leverett 1 for 3 (triple), 1 RBI; Price 1 for 2 (HR), 2 RBI
Fairport at Rush/Henrietta April 18
The JV squad had an impressive opening day at Rush-Henrietta winning 14-0 behind a nearly perfect effort by pitcher Emily McGrath. McGrath began the game by hitting the first batter and then didn't allow another player to reach base for 7 complete innings while racking up a personal best 17Ks.
Jess Mallow opened the scoring for Fairport in a big way in the second inning with a bomb that was first called a ground-rule double but then changed to a home run after an umpire conference. Lead-off hitter Lauren Devito walked in the 3rd inning and stole all the bases including home on a passed ball to make the score 2-0. In the 4th inning, Sam Vermulen smacked a hit up the middle for an RBI single and ground balls from Jeannette Petti and Devito scored 2 more runs to make the score 5-0. McGrath opened the 5th inning with a double and Sara Utz followed with a single. Fairport kept putting the ball in play in the 5th including a RBI single from Alina Fowler and a 2 RBI rip by Devito. Mallow helped keep the inning going with a brilliant slide under a tag at third on a good looking defensive play by RH. The 5th inning ended with Fairport up 11-0. Utz and Lauren Devito singled again in the 6th inning and Emily Molinich added a 2RBI single to cap the Fairport scoring at 14-0.

Rules were modified for the scrimmage, but Fairport pushed 13 runs across the plate while shutting out the Hilton Raiders.
Fairport retired the first three Hilton batters and wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Lead-off hitter Lauren Devito smashed a hard single through the infield and scored on a Emily McGrath triple. Sarah Utz smacked a 2 RBI single and Shanan Horan beat out a play at first for an infield hit. Two more runs came across on a Maddie Horowitz double and Fairport finished the first inning up 9-0.
