Westfield Girls Lacrosse (WGL) was organized in 2005 and is dedicated to providing the young girls of Westfield the opportunity to learn and play the game of lacrosse, and to foster good sportsmanship and conduct among all participants, coaches, and spectators.
Each year, Westfield Girls Lacrosse (WGL) offers lacrosse to girls in Grades 2-8 living in Westfield and nearby communities.
The first step for girls interested in playing is registration. Registration takes place in late January. Details on registration are provided in flyers distributed to Westfield elementary and middle schools in early January. Registration details are also provided here on the WGL website.
WGL assembles teams based on grade. Girls in Grades 2-4 play on the Bantams team(s). Girls in Grades 5-6 play on the Juniors team(s). Girls in Grades 7-8 play on the Seniors team(s).
The season begins unofficially in early March with indoor practice in Westfield schools. Practices are one or two weekdays each week – in the afternoon for Seniors and in the evening for Bantams and Juniors.
Outdoor conditions allow for practice to move outdoors (Stanley Park) sometime in early April – with two or more practices each week.
Games begin in late April and continue through mid-June. A team usually has two games per week – during the week and/or on weekends. Practices continue during this time period.
WGL teams compete against other town teams in Western Massachusetts – including Agawam and Northampton, Amherst and Wilbraham. About half the games are ‘away’ and therefore require travel.
Each WGL team also competes in tournaments – typically two tourneys each season. A tournament runs one full day – on a Saturday or a Sunday.
WGL teams are ‘travel teams’. Hence, there is a fair amount of activity (practice, games, tournaments) for a WGL player between early March and mid-June. A player is expected to be committed to her team – and to these team events.
WGL provides uniforms to the players. A girl must supply her own lacrosse stick, goggles, mouth guard and water bottle.
Westfield Girls Lacrosse is an organization run by volunteers. That is, board members, coaches and team parents are all volunteers. Funds to run the organization come from 3 major sources: Player registration fees, league sponsors and fund raiser(s).
For the past few years, WGL has conducted one fundraiser - a ‘calendar’ fundraiser, for which each girl has sold $50 in fundraiser tickets.
