Shorthanded Bombers Fall Short to Dartmouth

Westfield faced off against a strong Dartmouth Indians squad in the Final of the Canalmen Invitational in Bourne on Saturday.  The Bombers were game and showed resilience and heart despite being down key defensemen Danny Buckelew (upper body injury) and losing Senior forward Spencer Cloutier (shoulder) early in the 2nd period.  The game final was 2-0.

Westfield was thoroughly outplayed in the 1st 2 periods being outshot 19-5 to that point.  As dire as that was, the real story was dressed in stripes as the Bombers were challenged over and over again having to kill 6 penalties through the first 2 stanzas.

Despite all of that adversity, Westfield persevered and played a solid third period mounting several scoring chances.  The absolute story of the game and tournament was Sophomore goalie CJ Czarnecki.  He ended up making 28 saves, the majority of which occurred during the 9 total power plays given to Dartmouth (Westfield had 2).

With all of the penalty calls, it was difficult for the Bombers to gain any momentum or flow.  Joe Taupier and Ryan Moorhouse were solid up front leading the Bomber attack.  Dan Antonellis and Alex Maggipinto filled in admirably for the injured Buckelew on defense.

With all of the difficulty the Bombers faced, it was evident that the Indians are a very good team and a great matchup.  They are led by defenseman Murphy LePage (#4) and forward Will Cote (#9) who were catalysts throughout the game.
