Bombers defeat Rangers 2-0 In Nice Road Win

The Westfield Bombers traveled to Westboro Wednesday night to face off against the playoff bound Westboro Rangers at NorthStar Ice Arena. When the final buzzer sounded, Westfield had a 2-0 shutout to celebrate on the slick bus ride home.  CJ Czarnecki was the backbone of this win stopping 30 shots.  The Bombers did a nice job for the most part of keeping Westboro's shots from the outside, and Czarnecki showed poise and confidence all night.  There were a couple of rebound chances, but the Bomber netminder was aggressive in scrambling to control loose pucks.  He needed to be as Westfield was outplayed thoroughly in the 1st period.  They were hemmed in their zone for the majority of the frame playing "bend but don't break" defense.  The Bombers did capitalize on a Ranger mistake with just over 6 minutes remaining in period, however.  An errant pass between point men was tapped away by Joe Taupier who was able to outreach the Westboro defender and slide to puck to linemate Peter Chrisanthopoulos who sped in on a partial breakaway and fired the puck past the Westboro goalie high glove side.  Despite an ugly period, they took a 1-0 lead to the locker room.

The 2nd period was much better for Westfield as they evened out play and time of possession.  Both teams had their chances and Westfield took a 2-0 lead with under a minute remaining in the 2nd when they once again stole a pass at the blue line and went in on a partial breakaway for a goal.  This time, Aidan Fitzgerald did the stealing and passing and Danny Antonellis sniped home a wrister from the right side.

The 3rd period had both squads getting chances to score, but neither capitalized.  Both goalies were staunch and kept pucks out of the net with the final being 2-0.  The win moved the Bombers to 11-6-2 on the season with their final game scheduled at home Friday afternoon against Berry rival Longmeadow.

NOTES: The Bombers have enjoyed their time in Westboro; over the past 2 seasons, they've accumulated a 3-0-1 record facing some of Central Mass' best teams; Scotty Bussell was the star on offense squeezing off 5 shots on goal.  He was kept off the board by a couple of miracle saves by the Westboro goaltender Will Schiffman; Liam Webster anchored a solid Bomber D-corps with great 2-way play; Czarnecki logged his 7th solo shutout of the season--he combined with Ryan Bacon on another.
