Tournament History


The Hunterdon Horizon Girls Non Profit Basketball  March Madness Tournament was started in March 2002. The first set of teams to compete included both a Boys 7th Grade and a Boys 8th Grade Bracket.


The tournament was started to give teams another few games prior to the season ending. In the first year Hillsborough Basketball defeated South Brunswick Township in the 8th Grade final. South Brunswick 7th Grade defeated the Readington Township Vikings in double OT to win the championship. Other towns to compete besides Readington included Basking Ridge, Flemington-Raritan, Hillsborough, Long Valley and South Brunswick


In 2003 the tournament once again hosted both the 7th and 8th Grade Boys Divisions. That year saw the 7th Grade Boys from Tewksbury Athletic Association defeat Montgomery Township in OT. In the 8th Grade bracket the same two teams South Brunswick and Readington hooked up in another close game with South Brunswick retaining its championship. Teams attending included Hillsborough, Long Valley, Montgomery, Readington, St. Augustine, Tewksbury Athletic Association and South Brunswick.


In 2004, The Readington Recreation committee decided to look at organizing a tournament to benefit a worthy fund. Cynthia K. Critelli a long time resident and teacher at Three Bridges School in Readington had passed away on January 1, 2004. The family's wish was that any donations be given to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research fund. The committee felt this would a great way to remember the life of Mrs. Critelli and raise some money to help battle this terrible disease. The tournament then played host to Girls teams. The 2004 Cynthia K. Critelli Memorial Tournament saw Basking Ridge, Clinton Township, Readington Township and Tewksbury Athletic Association battle for the championship. Tewksbury Athletic Association defeated Basking Ridge in the Championship final while Readington defeated Clinton Township in the consolation game. $700 was raised and donated to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research fund in the name of Cynthia K. Critelli.


In 2005 the tournament saw both 6th Grade and 8th Grade girls compete. The 6th Grade girls consisted of the the Basking Ridge Red Devils, Green Brook, Middlesex and the Readington Renegades. Green Brook edged Readington in a close game for the championship. Middlesex defeated Basking Ridge in a tight game for third place. The 8th Grade Girls saw New Providence PAL, North Hunterdon Lady Lions, Readington Vikings and the St. Francis of Assisi Lady Knights battle for the title. North Hunterdon defeated a tough New Providence squad for the championship. In the consolation game Readington came on top in a good game with St. Francis


In 2006 the tournament saw 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade and 8th Grade girls compete. The 5th Grade girls consisted of the Clinton Township Lions, Flemington-Raritan Rockets, Readington Rockers and New Providence PAL. The Clinton Township Lions defeated the Flemington-Raritan Rockets to win the championship. Readington and New Providence finished in third and fourth place respectively. The 6th Grade girls consisted of the the Alexandria Aces, Long Valley, Readington, and Westfield. Readington edged Alexandria in a close game for the championship. Long Valley and Westfield finished in third and fourth place. The 7th Grade Girls saw the Clark Lady Crusaders, Hillsborough Raiders, Readington Renegades and St. Bernard Parish battle for the title. Clark defeated Readington for the championship. In the consolation game St. Bernard defeated Hillsborough in a great game
The 8th Grade Girls saw the Bridgewater Swish Gold, Long Hill, Oxford, and the Readington Hot Shots battle for the title. Bridgewater Swish Gold defeated Readington for the championship. In the consolation game Long Hill defeated Oxford.


In 2007 the tournament once again saw 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade and 8th Grade girls compete. The 5th Grade girls consisted of the Clinton Township Rush, Delaware Township, Montgomery Basketball and the readington Thunder. The Clinton Rush defeated the Readington Thunder to win the championship. Montgomery and Delaware Township finished in third and fourth place respectively. The 6th Grade girls consisted of the the Flemington-Raritan Rockets, Middlesex Recreation, New Providence PAL, and the Readington Rockers. Flemington-Raritan defeated the Readington Rockers for the championship. Middlesex Recreation and New Providence PAL finished in third and fourth place. The 7th Grade Girls saw the Alexandria Aces, Hopewell Valley Girls, Hillsborough Raiders, Readington Storm and Warren Youth Basketball Asscoiation battle for the title. Warren defeated Readington for the championship. In the consolation game Alexandria defeated Hopewell Valley in a great game
The 8th Grade Girls saw the Flemington-Raritan, Readington Renegades, Warren Youth Basketball Association and Westfield battle for the title. Readington defeated Warren for the championship. In the consolation game Flemington-Raritan defeated Westfield.

In 2008, the tournament once again saw 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade and 8th Grade girls compete. The Readington Revolution defeated the Bridgewater Swish Gold to win the championship. Hopewell Valley and Tewksbury finished in third and fourth place respectively. The 6th Grade girls consisted of the the Delaware Township, Kingwood Township, Lenape Valley, and the Readington Heat. The Readington Heat defeated Kingwood Township for the championship. Delaware Township and Lenape Valley finished in third and fourth place. The 7th Grade Girls saw the New Providence PAL, Long Valley, Readington Rockers and West Windsor Sparks battle for the title. West Windsor defeated Long Valley for the championship. In the consolation game Readington defeated New Providence in a great game
The 8th Grade Girls saw the Alexandria Aces, Hopewell Valley Girls, Middlesex Recreation and the Readington Storm, battle for the title. Middlesex defeated Alexandria for the championship. In the consolation game Hopewell Valley defeated Readington.

In 2009, the tournament hosted 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade and 8th Grade girls. The 5th Grade girls consisted of the Bridgewater Swish, Hopewell Valley, Readington and Tewksburt. Readington defeated the Bridgewater Swish to win the championship. Hopewell Valley and Tewksbury finished in third and fourth place respectively. The 6th Grade girls consisted of the the Kingwood Township, Lenape Valley, Readington Township, and Westfield. Readington defeated Kingwood Township for the championship. Westfield and Lenape Valley finished in third and fourth place. The 7th Grade Girls saw the New Providence PAL, Long Valley, Readington Rockers and West Windsor Sparks battle for the title. In 2010, the tournament brought back a 4th Grade Boys bracket along with 4th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade (Blue and Gold) and 8th Grade girls. The 4th Grade girls consisted of the Clinton Township, Flemington-Raritan White, Flemington-Raritan Black and Readington. In a home affair Flemington-Raritan Black defeated Flemington-Raritan White to win the championship. Readington Township and Clinton finished in third and fourth place respectively. The 5th Grade girls consisted of Clinton Township, Flemington-Raritan, Readington Township, and Warren Youth Basketball Association. Clinton Township defeated Flemington-Raritan for the championship. Readington Township and Lenape Valley finished in third and fourth place. The 7th Grade Girls Blue Division saw Delaware Valley, Readington, Warren Youth Basketball Association and West-Windsor Plansboro battle for the title. Readington defeated Warren Youth Basketball Association for the championship. In the consolation game Delaware Valley defeated West Windsor-Palinsboro. The 8th Grade Girls saw Delaware Valley, Hopewell Valley, Middlesex Recreation and Readington battle for the title. Hopewell Valley defeated Delaware Valley for the championship. In the consolation game Readington defeated Middlesex Recreation. The return of the boys bracket saw Readington, Tewksbury, Warren Youth Basketball Association and Westfield White battle for th title. Warren Youth Basketball Association defeated Readington for the Championship. Tewksbury defeated Westfield White in the consolation game.

In 2011, the tournament had a 5th Grade Boys bracket along with 4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6th Grade, 7th Grade and 8th Grade girls. Flemington-Raritan and Readington Township finished in third and fourth place. The 6th Grade Girls Division saw Clinton Township, Bridgewater, Readington Township and Warren Youth Basketball Association battle for the title. Bridgewater defeated Readington Township for the championship. In the consolation game Warren Youth Basketball defeated Clinton Township. The 7th Grade Girls included Branchburg Basketball Association, Bridgewater, Flemington-Raritan and Delaware Valley. Flemington-Raritan defeated Delaware Valley for the championship. In the consolation game Bridgewater defeated Branchburg. The 8th Grade Girls saw Delaware Valley, Flemington-Raritan, Readington Township and Warren Youth Basketball battle for the title. Readington defeated Delaware Valley for the championship. In the consolation game Warren Youth Basketball defeated Flemington-Raritan. The 5th Grade boys bracket saw CBAA, Hillsborough, Readington, and Warren Youth Basketball Association battle for the title. CBAA defeated Warren Youth Basketball Association the Championship. Hillsborough defeated Readington in the consolation game.

In 2012, the tournament had a 6th Grade Boys bracket to go along with the 4thm 5thm 6th, 7th and 8th Grade girls. The 4th Grade Girls consisted of Flemington-Raritan Black, Flemington-Raritan White, Long Hill and Readington. Long Hill defeated Flemington-Raritan Black for the Championship. Readington Township defeated Flemington-Raritan White in the consolation game. The 5th Grade Girls Bracket saw  Basking Ridge, Flemington-Raritan,  Readibngton Townshiup and Warren Youth Basketball Association compete. Readington Township took the crown over Flemington-Raritan while Basking Ridge defeated Warren Youth Basketball in the consolation game.  The 6th grade girls bracket saw Chatham,  Flemington-Raritan, Long Hill, and Readington compete for the championship. Chatham defeated Readington Township to win the championship. Flemington-Raritan defeated Long Hill to take the consolation game.  The 7th Grade Girls bracket cosnisted of Cranford PAL, Flemington-Raritan, Readington Township and Warren Youth Basketball Assoication.  Readington Township  defeated Cranford PAL for the championship. Flemington-Rarotan defeated Warren Youth Basketball Association to take the consolation game.  The 8th Grade girls conisted of Branchburg Basketball Association, Bridgewater Swish, Flemington-Raritan and Hillsborough Township. Flemington-Raritan defeated Hillsborough Township to win the championship. Bridgewater SAwish defeated Branchburg Basketball Association to win the consolation game.


This tournament will be a tradition for years to come. Its about playing some basketball and helping out a great cause. It is planned for all players to be recongized in some way. That could be a medal, trophy or the Cynthia K. Critelli MVP award. Each team will go home with a team trophy for their participation. Someone has to win a game but there are no winners or losers here just some children playing basketball giving their best to compete and having some fun. Enjoy the games!!!
