A Solid Win to Start the Second Half

October 21, Oakton, VA

The Fuego began the second half of the season the way they ended the first half, with a convincing win over the FASA Premier, 3-1.

After an initial back and forth, the Fuego got on the board about 20 minutes into the game when Jazz took a pass from Sabrine, cut across the field from left to right, and drilled a shot across her body that rifled past the goalie and into the net.

But the story of this game is as much about opportunities missed as it is opportunities capitalized on.

Not five minutes later, Jazz was clear on a breakaway off of a pass from Sara, and feeling the pressure from the pursuing defender, fired too soon and just missed the side of the net.  Another mad scramble shortly afterwards saw Sabrine, Julia, Jazz, Rhi, Aby, Ellie and Morgan all get a foot on the ball before the FASA defender cleared the zone.

Shortly afterwards Katie and Sabrine worked a great give and go deep into the FASA zone.  Sabrine shook off the defender and slid the ball back to Katie, who was wide open.  Katie sent a lofted shot towards the far post that Jazz just missed heading into the net.

However, the FASA team, despite playing with no subs, put a lot of pressure on the Fuego defense.  But Morgan, Kennia, Sara, Pauline, and Marika did a great job keeping the speedy FASA forwards tied up, making Caroline's job relatively easy.

The half ended with the Fuego up 1-0.

The Fuego started the second half with a little more urgency, and they began to get more scoring chances as a result.  About five minutes in, Nina fed Julia in the middle of the field.  Julia sent the ball in to Amanda, who passed it wide to Jazz.  Jazz got the ball deep, worked around a defender, and sent a pass screaming across the front of the goal.  Rhi came racing in towards the far post and redirected the shot into the net to put the Fuego up 2-0.

But once again the story was of near-misses.  Jazz got loose on yet another breakaway and beat the goalie, but hit the far post.  Another mad scramble in front of the FASA goal saw no less than five Fugeo players get a shot at the ball, but non managed to find the net.  A cross by Amanda just missed Nina racing toward the far post.  A shot by Julia beat the goalie but hit the crossbar, and one by Aby just missed on the right.

Then Jazz broke free on her fourth breakaway of the afternoon, but this time she made sure, and hammered home her second goal of the game, making the score 3-0.  However, the Fuego continued to press, and Nina, Rhi, Amanda and Sara all had chances.

The FASA team didn't quit, however, and the defense continued its strong play.  Caroline came up with several key saves, and the team worked to preserve the shut-out.  But with about five minutes to go the FASA team got a header off a great cross that Carline never saw that closed the gap to 3-1, but they got no closer, and the Fuego held on for the win.

The victory keeps the Fuego in a tie for first place in the division.  Up next, the very tough LFC Avalanche.
