Merchants sweep Elks, move to 9-2

The Jamestown Miller Lite Merchants upped its record to 9-2 with a sweep of the Jamestown Elks on Sunday at Jack Brown Stadium.

 
The Merchants went off for eight runs in the bottom of the sixth in Game 1 en route to a 14-6 victory. Bryan Erstad clubbed a three-run home run, while Tom Houdek went 2-for-3 with three runs, two RBI and a long ball of his own.
 
Joey Demers, Preston Jensen, Erstad and Steve Hirchert each scored twice.

Jamie Villareal tossed six innings, allowing six runs, but only three were earned.

In the nightcap, before the downpour hit Jamestown, the Merchants scored one in the fourth and two in the seventh to win 7-4. It was tied 4-all after three innings.

Erstad had a hit and two RBI. Jensen scored twice, went 1-for-2 and had an RBI.

Hirchert had the lone multi-hit outing, going 2-for-4 with two runs and a double. Jared Purdy also doubled.

Paul Roers worked five innings of scoreless relief to get the win on the mound.

The Merchants are back in action on Wednesday, facing the Moorhead Brewers in West Fargo.
