The PenMar-WV League begins its 70th consecutive season of operation on Saturday with a pair of doubleheaders that include the defending regular-season champion Cumberland Orioles and the two-time defending playoff champion Oakland Oaks.

Saturday's 1 p.m. season openers have the Orioles playing the Mt. Savage Old Germans at Holler Field at the Cumberland Fairgrounds, and the Oaks taking on Potomac Valley at Petersburg. The Tri-State Titans have a bye and will open their season on Sunday.

In Sunday's doubleheaders, Potomac Valley plays Tri-State at Allegany College  and Mt. Savage plays Oakland at Garrett College.

Last year, Cumberland won the regular season with a 20-4 record and finished 23-6 overall. Oakland finished second in the regular season with a 15-5 record and was 19-6 overall. The two teams played nine times last year, with Cumberland winning five times and Oakland four.

Terry Helbig is the president of the wooden bat league, which is the second oldest in Maryland.
