State Champions!!! – Victor 5, Niagara Wheatfield 1
For the first time in program history, Victor leaves the ice as State Champions, defeating Niagara/Wheatfield (NW), 5-1 (http://www.nysphsaa.org/Portals/0/images/D1%20Finals%20Victor%20NW.jpg). Victor played smart and patient all game, not getting drawn into NW’s physical style of play. Victor played their strong skating style and didn’t retaliate or lose composure when the game got tense. Victor started strong, putting 10 shots on goal in the 1st period, but couldn’t beat the NW goalie. The 1st ended with no score for either team. Like Massena, NW scored first with a little under 10 minutes remaining in the 2nd. Victor answered quickly and often, scoring 3 goals in a 5-minute span. The tying goal was a beauty in passing as all 5 Victor skaters touched the puck. Mitch Rydzynski fed Andrew Crean behind the net who one touched a great pass to Sam Lambert streaking down the high slot. Sam beat the goalie glove side to tie it up at 1 with 6 and a half minutes left in the 2nd period. Less than two minutes later, Josh Albert scored the 2nd Victor goal – streaking down the ice, circling the NW net, and beating the goalie high on the short side. Three minutes later, Ashton Collazo picked up the puck inside the Victor blue line. Going one-on-one against the NW defensemen, Ashton used his speed and made a great inside-out move to get around the defense and streaked in alone on the NW goalie. Ashton made no mistake and beat him high on the short side to give Victor a 3-1 lead heading into the locker room. Victor felt good as Chayse Ierlan and the Victor defense had not given up any lead heading into the 3rd period all season. That was still the case, as NW couldn’t beat the Victor defense in the 3rd. Both Sam Lambert and Ashton Collaz added third period goals. Playing their team first game, Victor skated off the ice as State Champs – downing Niagara/Wheatfield 5-1!
