St Pius X shines to claim first Archdiocesan Championship

June 23, 2017

Upper Southampton - On a beautiful night at Klinger Middle School, St Pius X put on a defensive clinic to win the 2017 Archdiocese of Philadelphia CYO Softball Championship. A night when two of the best teams the city has seen in years met on a neutral field will be remembered for the exceptional work on both sides of the ball by the first time champions.

To say St Pius was good on defense would be the understatement of the season. The Panthers, from Broomall, Delaware County, put Annabelle Donato and Bailey Mattson in the circle, allowing three hits and facing only five batters over the minimum. The ladies had a stellar WHIP of .714. Even with the multiple hard hits balls by the Knights, the defense behind the pitchers was phenomenal. The glove work combined for a near perfect .913 fielding percentage. Brooke McKeown topped off the defensive show with an amazing play to pick off a line shot from the bat of Molly McHugh and snap throw to double up Bell from first base.

The bats were just as good for  St Pius in the winning effort. In the first inning, Kerri McCallum singled and scored two batters later on a line single by Maria Patterson. The big shot came in the third inning. McKeown walked to lead things off. McCallum singled to the left side, leaving runners at the corners for Patterson. The next pitch sealed the game for the Panthers when a towering home run to left field by Patterson put the game out of reach. Two more runs scored in the fifth to cap the scoring.

St Charles Borromeo, of Bensalem, Bucks County, entered the night with an undefeated record. After playing a tough regular season schedule of Region 19 and Region 1 opposition, the Knights were the #2 seed entering the tournament.  The team was a combined parish effort of both St Charles and St Ephrem parish players. Led by co-head coaches Lisa Bell and Eric Rios, the Knights had a solid performance. Pitchers Dana Bell and Amanda Slabicki combined for an 11 strikeout performance inside the circle, while allowing only four walks and seven hits. The offense for St Charles was good, but not good enough, to work through the stifling St Pius defense. 15 of the Knights 24 at-bats were statistically Quality At-Bats, with over 30% of them going for more than six pitches. There were six hard hit balls, with three going for hits off the bats of Melanie Rios, Bell, and Haley Cowell. Shelby Broadhead was robbed twice by the Panthers defense.

This Championship Final did not disappoint, and both teams return a number of players; so a rematch next summer is not out of the question.
