Rising sophomores set for USA Baseball's team trials

July 3, 2013

Two Austin-area baseball players will play for a spot on a national team's roster.

Round Rock's Mason Thompson and Akins' Austin McNicholas are two of the 40 players that have made USA Baseball's 2013 15U National Team Trials roster. The trials will be held from July 13-18 in Cary, N.C., and the two players will be competing for two of 20 roster spots on the 15U National Team.

Thompson and McNicholas are two of the three Texans that will be at the USA Baseball National Training Complex-hosted trials. In total, 14 states will be represented and players from two additional states - Utah and Tennessee - are listed among the event's 11 alternates.

Thompson and McNicholas just completed their freshman years of high school. Thompson, a right-handed pitcher, verbally committed to the University of Texas' baseball program in May, and McNicholas, an infielder, pledged to the Longhorns on Tuesday.

SS Austin McNicholas (2016/Akins HS, Austin, TX): McNicholas is just beginning to put some strength on his young 5-10/150 frame but he already has some next level tools and shows plenty of polish to his game at a young age.

USA Baseball (NTIS) Article

August 22, 2012

Austin McNicholas played for South Texas in the 2011 NTIS and performed well in front of the USA Baseball coaching staff and scouts. The NTIS gave him the opportunity to compete against the best players in the country, and gain valuable baseball experience. His performance earned McNicholas an invitation to participate in the inaugural 2012 14U National Team Development Program (NTDP).

"If it wasn't for the NTIS I wouldn't have been able to play for the 14U NTDP and learn from professionals like Bob Watson and J.D. Closser," McNicholas said.

Playing for USA Baseball in the 14U NTDP also provided McNicholas with a chance to learn from some of the best coaches in the country. Along with Watson and Closser, McNicholas worked former major leaguers Paul Shuey and James Baldwin, and Division I baseball coaches like Arizona State's Tim Esmay and Kentucky's Gary Henderson.

Former Houston Astros pitcher tries to help youngsters buck the Major League odds

March 19, 2012

A early standout was Austin McNicholas, who not only plays shortstop, but also pitches and catches and is a current member of the 2012 14U USA National Team.

“He is from Austin and traveled down to Houston to play full time with us," Sampson says. "Even as a kid, he leads by example. He doesn't say much, but he works his butt off, and has that quiet confidence about him.

"He wants to succeed and wants to win – all very important attributes for any good athlete.
