Hilton, N.Y. —

The Hilton Cadets began their Section 5 Class AAA baseball title defense with a 3-0 win against a true Class AA contender, Churchville-Chili.

Senior southpaw Gavin Black threw a complete-game, two-hit shutout outlasting Saints junior Jordan Eich in a classic pitchers’ duel.

“It’s good to know that we can do the same thing as last year,” Black said. “Last year we weren’t always pounding the ball but we manufactured runs. It’s good to start off the season with a win.”

After a first inning in which Eich gave up a base hit and two runs, he didn’t allow another hit in the ballgame and struck out seven batters in 6 2/3 innings. Black felt that it was essential for Hilton to get to the opposing left-hander early, because of Eich’s ability on the hill.

“It makes it so much easier the rest of the game if you can pitch with the lead,” he said. “It’s such a difference maker because you have so much more confidence in your pitches, knowing that if they score one run or two at worst they’re tied.”

The top of the order gave the Saints (1-1) problems throughout the game, specifically third baseman Dan Hurlimann, who scored both times he reached base. In the bottom of the first speedy leadoff man Jake Coleman hit a groundball in the gap between second and short and reached when senior shortstop John Bennett couldn’t get a throw off.

Apparently rattled Eich gave up a walk to Hurlimann and after striking out Black, both runners advanced on a pitch in the dirt. Later in the same Cory McEvoy at-bat, Eich lost control of another breaking ball and Coleman sped home for the early 1-0 lead.

Hurlimann would come home later in the inning, capitalizing on an error at second base and the Cadets had a 2-0 lead.

“The base-running was very important,” Hurlimann said. “There was a good pitcher for Churchville and we knew we weren’t going to get many hits so when we got on we expected to be aggressive on the basepaths.”

C-C threatened in the top of the second when cleanup man Joe Akel lined a double into the right-field gap to lead off the inning. He advanced to third on a ground out to Coleman but was stranded on third when Black caught Connor Naughton and Zack Lander looking to end the inning.

Eich settled into a groove sitting down the Cadets in order in the third and fourth innings but every time the Saints appeared to be in a position to score, Hilton came up with a huge play in the field. The host turned three double plays to end solid Churchville rallies in the later innings.

“We knew we’d have a pitchers battle,” Saints coach Ed Distaffen said. “Gavin threw a great game and things worked in their favor a little early on. They made those double plays that really bailed them out of the inning.”

Desperately seeking an insurance run Hurlimann took matters into his own hands in the bottom of the sixth, reaching on a walk and then stealing both second and third. He would score the third run of the game on a Jeff Stanton groundout giving Black more than enough breathing room.

“I knew that our coach wasn’t happy with two runs because Churchville can come back easily,” Hurlimann said. “So the third run was the insurance in our perspective so I knew it was going to happen eventually.”

Despite the loss Distaffen was impressed with his ace’s mettle on the mound and believes that the cerebral junior will rebound.

“Jordan threw a fantastic game and there’s nothing really to hold his head down,” he said. “He threw a one-hitter so he shows a lot of poise and he’s very solid and mentally tough.

“He’ll bounce back from this.”

Division II

Churchville-Chili Saints

Coach: Ed Distaffen, fourth year. Last season: 7-15, lost in quarterfinals.

2008 classification: AA.

Players to watch: Greg Schworm (jr. C, 3B), Joe Akel (jr. P), David Mazzullo (sr. P), John Bennett (jr. SS), Dan Erne (jr. P, 2B).

Outlook: The Saints, who have a strong pitching staff, made two significant jumps this season — down from Class AAA and into Division II.

Distaffen and his team have had to overcome a very emotional offseason. Teddy Piendel, the Saints' sophomore shortstop, died in a car accident less than two weeks after last season. The accident also took the lives of two other Churchville-Chili students.

"We have spent a lot of time together over the last 10 months, and we have bonded together. Our team chemistry is going to be hard to beat," Distaffen said.
